You put a natural oil in your mouth and swish it for about 20 minutes. I use coconut oil. Benefits? Your teeth get REALLY clean....Your mouth is cleaner then ever before. It also tends to take germs away. Skin improves. All kinds of stuff like that.

What sold me was how my teeth looked and how my mouth felt after dong it.

The first time was hard. I had to build up to the 20 minutes. Now? It's no big deal.

I love it.

I don't think I could either but I might give it a try just for the heck of it. Do you mean like extra virgin olive oil or what? How much of it?

The Olive oil isn't a good oil to use because some people say it will yellow your teeth. I believe on "Oil Pulling" forums they say Sesame Oil and Sunflower oil is good?

I do it with coconut oil because of the other health benefits in coconut oil. I have also done it with Castor Oil. THAT's a Powerful "pull"!

It is hard to do at first, but you get used to it. Your first time, you are lucky if you can do it for 3 to 5 minutes. I really didn't think I could ever build up to 20 minutes, but I did. I noticed right away how white my teeth looked and I was hooked.

Now? I just put some coconut oil in before I take a bath, by the time I'm out of the tub and done...It's been about 20 minutes.

with coconut oil it may not be to bad.. but i'd have a hard time keeping in there for 15-20 minutes! I can barely keep a piece of gum in my mouth that long before I have an urge to swallow or spit it out.

I love the precautions off the wikipedia page!
"Precautions

1. Oil should not be swallowed or gargled.

2. Oil pulling should be attempted only on empty stomach to avoid vomiting."

i do it and love it. i also use coconut oil. the first time i did it i couldn't keep it in my mouth for even a minute. i've built up my tolerance and now do it while i'm checking the board in the morning. my teeth feel amazing and my gums look incredible.

epix - those are both true statements. the oil becomes toxic because it is pulling all of the toxins from your body so you do not want to swallow it. if you do it when you have something in your belly the pulling does make you nauseous.

Do you brush your teeth afterward or does the oil pulling take the place of brushing them?

You brush your teeth afterwards. The whole thought in the Oil pulling is that it will get germs and such PULLED out of your mouth and system. You want to make sure your mouth is clean afterwards.

Also, It took me awhile to get into the Habit of oil pulling (just like anything else)

Does it work? Yeah, if you actually DO IT! This past summer hubby and I were on our boat and I had not been oil pulling in awhile (I got lazy) Out of the blue I had a toothache and swelling (infection) in a tooth that had already had a root canal done to it (Actually 2 root canals on the same tooth, but that's another story). I KNEW it was going to be bad. What could I do out on the lake? Well, I had my coconut oil with me (always travel with it) and Started "Pulling" about 3 times in that one day. The next day all symptoms were gone.

I AM a believer.

Also, the oil pulling will actually PULL food partials out of your teeth better then brushing your teeth or even using dental floss. I kid you not. This is also something you have to get used to, because as you continue to pull, you will feel those partials in your mouth and you will see them when you spit it out. That's also how you know (besides how great your mouth looks and feels) how clean your mouth actually is.

You also won't have bad breath, because you won't have those germs in your mouth anymore.

I think one of the first signs/benefits of Oil pulling is that people no longer have the rough and dry heals on the bottoms of their feet. It's true. I don't.

Haystar, I was just like you...I thought there was NO WAY I could do it and yes, I felt (at first) that I would throw up. Now? I Love it. I had to slowly work my way up and I'm glad I did.

jacksmixedtape - start out slow and don't get discouraged. it started that i could only do it for a few minutes. then i did it in 10min section (pull for 10 and spit out, get more oil, pull for 10 more). now i go the straight 20 like it is second nature!

btw - love your new pic. you are a lovely lady.

Start with a small amount. You actually don't have to do it for 20 minutes...It's until the oil and saliva in your mouth turns White and foamy. Some people that might be 10 minutes...Others 15....and others 20.

You are to use cold pressed Oils. Just start slow and do a small amount. Swish it in our mouth and pull it through your teeth. Sort of like what a little kid does with Jello!! LOL Remember?

It's very usual for people to get the urge to cough when they first start the "Oil pulling". These are germs and toxins that are being pulled out of your body. That
