~*~" Waist'ing Away" with CLA/GLA in 2008~*~

Welcome to the 2008 Edition of CLA/GLA

Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, dietary supplements should be taken only under the supervision of a knowledgeable healthcare provider.

What is CLA/GLA?

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)—to promote lean muscle while burning fat.

Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA)—for its many beneficial effects in fighting muscle inflammation and supporting the immune system. From a fat loss perspective, GLA is vital in supporting the production of two strong fat burning hormones…growth hormone and the body’s primary calorie burning hormone, thyroid hormone. GLA should be taken with food

Most effective daily dose...
CLA 3400 mg (1/2 Tbsp liquid once a day, or 5 Tonalin or Spring Valley capsules)
GLA 500-1000 mg (2-4 Borage Oil caps a day)

How does CLA work?
A: CLA prevents fat from being deposited into the cells by speeding up the body's fat metabolism. CLA also helps the body metabolize existing fat deposits. This fat then returns to the blood stream where it is used as energy by muscle cells and the liver. CLA activates genes that trigger fat cell death, shrinks fat cells, speeds up metabolism.

CLA Turns on Fat Breakdown Genes
CLA Boosts Endurance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How does GLA work?
A: Numerous research studies have examined the role of GLA for improving health, specifically in the area of weight loss. GLA from borage oil causes less body fat to accumulate. Borage oil owes its healing power to the presence of essential fatty acids, the most important of which is GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid. (While borage oil is often used interchangeably with evening primrose oil, ounce for ounce, borage oil boasts more than twice as much GLA.)
Guidelines for Use
Taking borage oil with food may boost GLA absorption and minimize unpleasant side effects.
If you take an anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication, check with your doctor before trying borage oil. The are no other known drug or nutrient interactions associated with borage oil.
Possible Side Effects ...
Borage oil may cause loose stools and minor stomach problems.
Other benefits of Borage Oil...
Reduce the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis
Clear up acne and rosacea
Alleviate inflammation associated with lupus
Prevent nerve damage (neuropathy) due to diabetes
Combat damage from multiple sclerosis
Ease cough and soothe throat disorders
Treat Alzheimer's-related memory deficiencies
Reduce stress and high blood pressure
Nourish nails, scalp, and hair
Counter impotence and female infertility
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

CLA Q&A

Is CLA Safe to Take With My Thyroid Medications?
There's no evidence that CLA, a food supplement, interacts with thyroid medications, or poses any special dangers to thyroid patients. But you should always discuss any supplements you intend to take with your own physician or practitioner before starting.

Is CLA Only for People with Thyroid Problems?
Absolutely not. The studies have shown that it's effective in general for reducing/converting fat. You don't have to have a thyroid problem -- you just have to be overweight -- to benefit from CLA.

How Much Should I Take?
The study found that 3.4 grams of CLA was needed in order to get the benefits. That's 3,400 mg. Since the various formulas contain a percentage of other oils as ingredients, it's wise to probably calculate how much each pill is delivering to make sure you're getting the full 3.4 grams a day. For example, if your capsule contains 75% CLA, and it's 1000 mg, then you're getting 750 mg of CLA, and would need 5 per day to get to the 3.4 grams level.

How Should I Take It?
The various recommendations differ here. Some recommendations suggest to take it before eating. Others suggest to take it with meals. Take it preferably with lowfat or nonfat milk for maximum protein absorption. Personally, I'm taking it right before I eat with some Calorie Countdown milk.

Does CLA Have Any Side Effects?
Some people report feeling slightly green or nauseous after taking their CLA, or isolated cases of gastrointestinal upset or loose stools. These side effects typically are reduced when the product is taken with protein (i.e.,with milk), and usually decrease after about 2 weeks taking the supplement.

Usually, in the first three weeks, the abdominal fat "pooch" starts shrinking. Other "fattier" areas (such as cheeks, upper arms, rear end) seemed to be slowly reducing as well. You may notice that your appetite is somewhat reduced. You may feel a bit green after taking the CLA the first couple days, but if you take it with milk, or protein it should eliminate that problem.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some of us prefer the liquid CLA from Netrition. One bottle which is about $23.00 lasts a full month. You just take 1/2 Tbsp a day to get your full dose. We also prefer to get our Borage Oil from Netrition. It has a higher GLA content, so less pills to take, and more pills per bottle than other brands. So by getting your combo from Netrition, its alot cheaper than taking all the caps from other stores.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On the first of each month you can post progress pics with your cla/gla results. You will not be pressured to post them if your not comfortable doing so. Some of us feel we stay more accountable if we do, and it helps that others can see good changes in the update pics that we cannot see ourselves. If you choose not to post them, thats ok, but please take them anyway for yourself to compare updates with. Thats where you will see the changes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you're taking CLA, don't take your Omega-3s at the same time. They will compete against each other for absorption. Leave at least a 3 hour window when taking both.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Clarinol CLA Plus
CLA Plus with Clarinol (1 bottle is a months supply) $22.95
or
Tonalin CLA
Tonalin CLA, 1000mg 90 softgels $9.99

NOW Foods Borage Oil
Now Brand Borage Oil, 240mg GLA 120 softgels $14.99

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

I got on the scale this morning. 307 pounds. OUCH! I have my work cut out for me. I need to go find my tape, take some measurements and post them. After a Christmas break filled with high carb foods, I'm ready to get back to my low carb lifestyle. My goal for right now is to get back in to the 270's and I really hope to hit 250 by turkey season.

It's great to see some new people!

Good luck everyone!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!! I am really trying hard to get back on track. I went to the grocery store and stocked up on what I really need to eat. I have been reading alot about supplements and vitamins. I need something to help with my shoulder pain. I really don't want to go to the doctor, it's just a waste of my time and money. I know what she will say. You know, heat and cold, take pain relievers, etc,etc. Some of my friends say supplements have really helped them. And of course, my CLA and GLA are already in my purse ready to go. Good Luck to everyone !!

Hello, everyone.
I am starting my CLA/GLA combo today. I have gained over 20 lbs in the last 6 months and for some reason I have not been able to lose a pound even though I have tried everything that has always worked for me.
I have been a little down about it.
I have a question, I can take the combo together and the fish oil separate, but is the fish oil also part of the success of the combo?
I have a supplement that says Triple Omega 3-6-9 on the bottle.
It has Flax, fish and borage oils, all in one pill. Is that something I could take, or it will not make the combo work, since all the oils are together?
I am really looking forward to seeing results with this combo, I hope it works for me!

Hello everyone!! Happy New Year to all! I have been reading a few lc pages these past several months. I did get the gla/cla and restarted my lc eating the first part of december. I have not posted, but keep reading what everyone is saying and trying to get motivated to lose this 80 pounds I need to loose. I have talked to a few of you before, and have been encouraged, but feel like such a failure. I don't want to get so down on myself that is harms my way to success. Well, it is a new year, and I wish I could get rid of the bad food in my house, but kids keep bringing it in. I am starting tomorrow again, as today I have a dinner to go to. I thought I would do better over the holidays, but I didn't. So, I am in on this thread and will set goals as I want and need to get this weight off for good. I realized this past month, that I have no support at home, but reading this site, and the encouragement you give each other, is amazing. I am a 59 year old woman, 5'7", 220 pounds. I have been widowed for 15 years, raising my kids alone, and now have 2 foster children. My own daughter is always telling me to diet, diet, diet, and I realized she must be embarrassed of me. She seems very disgusted with me as I stay "fat". Anyway, I will keep reading, and I write down your menu ideas which is great. I tried the Christmas challenge but I think I joined too late and thought I would make better of it than I did. New Year - New Me! Thanks to all.

Happy New Year all you that are "waisting away" with the COMBO!!

I'm still hanging in taking the Combo and increasing my Borage oil to 4 a day to see if I can get some inches and/or weight off. I've been in a stall of both weight AND inches and I'm still pretty bummed about it, but this my WOE for life, so I'm sticking with it, no matter what.

I'm Vickilynn, a 51 y/o woman. I am Diabetic (On januvia and Metformin), Hypothyroid (on Synthroid), hypertensive (on BP meds and lasix) and in menopause since chemotherapy for Leukemia.

Needless to say, losing is S-L-O-W!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna go get some organic fish oil sometime this week to add to my Combo.

Jane, I am sorry that your daughter feels this way. However, quite simply, that i sher problem, not yours. I know you love her, but please do not accept her condemnation. You must do this for YOU and YOUR health and well-being and we are here to help you every step of the way.

Please do not let someone, even your daughter, guilt you or drive you to do this, for it eventually, it will sabotage your efforts if you are only trying to please someone else. (Ask me how I know!! )

I re-started at 218 in July, so we have some similar stats. How tall are you and what shape do you have?

I am 51, 5/3" and a huge APPLE shape, actually, more like a lollipop on a stick!

And, it's NEVER too late! Right now is the best time to start!

above chest: 36"
chest: 41" (I think - will have to recheck)
under chest (bra band area): 36"
waist: 36 3/4" (This really makes me sick - used to be a 26" waist in my 30's)
hips: 47"

jeans: 18 and 18w depending on how they are made
shirt: large mostly and some x-large

Let's do it! And here's to my treadmill bud.

Thanks Mountain Girl - I'm 5'7" 59 years old, and about 220. I don't dare get on the scale. My daughter even called me from vacation to ask about my diet, and how's the diet going. I'm so sick of hearing it. I do feel awful about how I look, as when my husband died I was in really good shape. I turned to food for everything, and gained all this weight. For me, it is very hard to get rid of all these bad habits, sugar cravings and late night eating. I will actually get up after I fell asleep and feel like I need to find something to eat. I have nothing that fits me. I do know that the few days I have stuck to lc eating, my cravings were not there so much. We got so much candy for Christmas that none of us need. My last dinner was tonight, so tomorrow I will try and get myself organized. Are we going to post menus? Another thing is I don't exercise aT ALL except when I'm running around at work. I work from 4 am until 2m, then work again from 4-6 pm mentoring some kids. I think I'lll set a valentines day goal. Let's do this together. Thanks everyone.

Marsha, your probably right about the water. I did the same thing at times.

Phil, Glad your still hanging with us

Deanna, sounds like your ready to go. I'm counting down the days till I can restart !!

anniemo, we are glad to have you join us , Welcome to the thread !!

bellabella, Welcome to you also, to the thread and the site.

Jane, please don't feel like a failure. Your NOT !! A failure gives up and says He** with it, and although most of us have fallen back to bad eating habits at one time or another, we find our way back to this thread, so thats makes us all winners in my book !!!!! Welcome back to this thread , We are all here for you. I totally agree with what Vickilynn said. I think a Valentines goal is a great idea !! Lets all post where we want to "reasonably" be on Feb 14th !! I'll have to see what my starting weight will be and post a goal when I can restart. My scale is going up every day ack !!! (210 today )

Tylar_Connar, Glad you'll be joining us

Vickilynn, Glad your still taggin along with us too. You bring alot of laughter to the thread with your bubbly personality

Michele, Glad your still with us too . I'll be posting my measurements and starting pic (yikes, did I type that?) once Tom & I can restart. We got the treadmill all ready to jump on and get going !!! We can keep track of how long we did it each day to stay accountable. Anyone else wanna join the treadmill challange? lol

I just want to say, that although our families can hurt our feelings with the "diet" advice ...try to keep in mind, they do it because they "Care". A bit annoying at times lol but its done out of love

chic, where are you girl? Get your butt over here to the new thread pronto !!!

Tom, it's about time you started posting here !!!

S: 1 oz cream cheese with cinnamon ( going thru a phase of loving this stuff)
D: 6 ozs pork shredded with 1 tbsp low carb bbq sauce and 1/2 oz shredded cheese 1 tbsp sour cream

Drinking green tea, aquacal, and dandelion tea and smart water.

My goal by Feb. 14 is to hopefully see some inches lost (even if the scale hardly moves). I also want to to make exercise a habit (and I truly hate exercise). I am going to challenge myself to walk on the treadmill at least 2 to 3 times a week. In between that, I will be lifting free weights that aren't that heavy (6 lbs. is the heaviest I own); otherwise, I have a universal gym in the basement I can use for heavier lifts once I get to that point. (I'm really, really out of shape!)

Here is a pic of me on Christmas Day (standing with black on)

I'm doing the hiding routine. I can't stand how big I look! Wish I could be all tiny like my baby sis sitting on the floor in front of my dad. My brother is beside my dad and my DH is behind me. My other younger sister is standing beside me and her DH by her.

Waist: 35"

Hips: 41"

Belly pooch: 41"

I weighed in at 175lbs a few days ago so I am going by that.
TOM is here and I have officially started a running challenge
I ran 1.5 miles on Sunday and 1.5 miles today. Tomorrow is my first 3 mile run!! I ran a full 1.5 today without walking OR stopping!! So exciting

Is it true that you "gain" water weight or something when you first start running??

I am also on my weight training/ab ball workouts too. I am doing weight training 5x/week and running 4x/week. I am running just to "get in shape" I have always done weight training, but never been able to run more than 2 miles and that was winded. I am excited to share running with my DH also
My mini-goal is 15lbs(or 1-2 sizes) by V-day

Good luck everyone!!

Hello All!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Count me in on the new thread.

Tom: Your right, its great that Trish has kept this going.

Freeing Myself: congrats on your running goals. I tried it with a friend but the pounding kills my hips.

Michele: glad to hear you're felling a little better.

Jane: I too can relate with the diet questions, my dad has done the same but he too is large and didn't want me going through what he is now. I am a single mom with a bipolar child so I opted for gastric bypass to help me. It was my best choice but it is not for everyone. Keep up the good work: WE ARE HERE FOR YOU!!!

Mountain Girl: Stay strong Beautiful Woman!!! I have the utmost faith in you and your weightloss. Your body may not respond in a timely manner as the rest due to everything that you have survived. You have such an awesome outlook on life, don't ever lose that. We are here for you too.

Welcome to all the other NEWBEEs

ON a positive note: I am down another 3 pounds.

I started yesterday at 207. Stepped on scale today and was 204. I'll take it!

Off topic: If you followed kimkins at all or the fascination thread, you will know who this is.......Christin and her DH and kids have been in a very bad accident and have been life flighted to various hospitals. I read this news on the other thread I am in and it happened yesterday or last evening. If you are a praying person, please for Christin and her family. Thanks.
