A biologist at Berkeley shared something very revealing on the low-carb BBS system a few years ago that helps us all through the erratic weight fluctuations you invariably encounter: Fat cells are resilient, stubborn little creatures that do not want to give up their actual cell volume. Over a period of weeks, maybe months of "proper dieting", each of your fat cells may have actually lost a good percentage of the actual fat contained in those cells. But the fat cells themselves, stubborn little guys, replace that lost fat with water to retain their size. That is, instead of shrinking to match the reduced amount of fat in the cell, they stay the same size! Result - you weigh the same, look the same, maybe even gained some scale weight, even though you have actually lost some serious fat.
The good news is that this water replacement is temporary. It's a defensive measure to keep your body from changing too rapidly. It allows the fat cell to counter the rapid change in cell composition, allowing for a slow, gradual reduction in cell size. The problem is, most people are frustrated with their apparent lack of success, assume they have lost nothing, and stop dieting.
However, if you give those fat cells some time, like 4-6 months, and ignore the scale weight fluctuations, your real weight/shape will slowly begin to show. The moral of the story - be patient! Your body is changing even if the number on the scale isn't.

Patterns of Weight Loss
Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe... resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges... the 2 week induction is pretty heady... weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.
Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage... and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.
A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK... so you done good on Atkins during induction... lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa! Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!
So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis... this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used... which will account for the rest. All in all... MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water... The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing... got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin antidiuretic hormone... more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in effect... but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a *good* thing.
From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water... but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss... which, as mentioned before is rate-limited. Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week... under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number).

So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occuring.

Anyway, it's a dodge caravan and I found myself under the glove compartment, twisted sideway with both arms somehow up underneith the dash board. OOPPS! Wrong size socket. I pulled myself out, went to get a different socket and assumed the position again. I had to do that several times. Bolwer moter is installed and it works. Work today was no better. I get in the middle of doing one thing and someone else needs this done sooner. I'M BEAT!!

I don't know if I'll go cardio tonight or not. It's only 20 minutes but man it feels good to sit down.

Speaking of the combo...I have forgot to take mine the last 2 days. I guess I was just in a hurry to get out the door.

I don't know what I'll do about supper. I'm not even hungery and the only think that sounds good is water, which I haven't drank enough of today.

I wish I had a hot tub. I'd be soaking right now!

Hi Phil, sorry to hear about your busy day It must be nice to have someone handy when it comes to vehicles. I will never let my boyfriend touch my car again. My battery went out awhile back, and when he tried to replace it, he got the wires crossed, blew out other parts and I lost my radio for good. !! That sucks !!!! I know he meant well, but no more.

Sit back and relax !!!

Hi Deanna!

I like being busy at work. It makes the day go so much faster. When I get into my work I forget about everything, but I hate being interupted. You know how it goes...if you want something done, ask the busy guy.

Did you check your fuse panel for a blown fuse? I hope thats all it is. Driving with out a radio sucks.

Tomorrow is FRIDAY!!!!!

I'm going to bed y'all. I'm beat.
Good night

He's actually a very good entertainer-I saw him at Ozzfest. He doesn't just sing but puts on a great show. He's definitely weird but I do like some of his music and he sounds great live. I don't know how many concerts I've been too and the artist or groups sound terrible.

I just got my combo (took longer than i thought) but since reading about maybe restroom problems at the begining I'll wait till the weekend to start so my body can adjust.

WOW no body told me how BIG those borage oil pills are!! jeez.....

ok, so just to clarify one more time:

1/2 TBLS CLA AND GLA/BORAGE OIL PILL FIRST THING IN THE MORNING (WITH MEAL)

THEN ONE BORAGE PILL BEFORE LUNCH AND ANOTHER BEFORE/WITH DINNER

THAT'LL COVER THE DAILY INTAKE

THAT CORRECT???

THANKS FOR THE INFO
Yes, adjusting to the coconut oil before each meal plus adding some mayo etc will help. Just make sure you add it first to Ftiday or whatever tracker and adjust your calories around it. It will add more calories, but it will all balance out and you won't feel starved I promise!

My menu for today-

B- 2 oopsies with 2 slices canadian bacon, 1 egg, 1 slice cheese, tomato and mayo

L- Large mixed greens with tuna salad(mayo, mustard added), 1/2 cucumber, tomato, mushrooms and topped with cheddar cheese

D- Italian Turkey sausage with fried yellow pepper and other half cucumber with ranch dressing

Good morning all. I'm so excited! My girlfriend called last evening and said she is taking a 1/2 day off work and wants to do something this afternoon. So we will be running around. Then, her husband said for DH and I to be ready at 6 p.m. they are taking us somewhere. My guess is probably out to dinner. So, I probably won't be on the computer this evening, but party on!

Lisabinil, drink a fuse martini for me.

MG - I'm doing the same thing, once my CLA is done, I am not buying anymore. I probably have a little over a months worth left. I will continue the Boragle oil (GLA) because it helps with my joint pain due to my Hashimoto's.

Have a good day everyone!

Michele...sounds like you are in for a wonderful day!!! Have fun.

ADLMA...I just got over dealing with sick kids. I know what you're going thru and it isn't fun.

Mikki...R U feeling better yet? Hope soon.

Phil...same thing happened to my DH as you and your friend. His childhood friend was supposed to join the marine corp with him through the buddy system. When it was time to ship out. No friend was to be found! I guess it all had to do with different beliefs. DH's dad figured it would be the best thing for him and well, the friend's dad didn't but now probably wishes he had.

Yay Marsha!...useless trivia will be fun tonight as long as we can all get here at the same time. The winner gets absolutely NOTHING!!!

C yall later~

I had to come in and share my NSV!! The last pair of jeans I bought were a 16/stretch and they have been feeling a "little" loose lately. Yesterday I was in WM and happened to see they had some jeans on clearance for $5-I bought a regular 16 and 14. Figured for $5 I could hold on to the 14's till they fit. I tried on both pair last night and they both fit!! Probably another 5 lbs or so and I could wear the 14's comfortable. I would even wear them now if there wasn't such a "muffin top"!! I wish that would go away!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited-I haven't fit in a 14 since high school!

B-tea w/cream, 1/2 of a tomato, avocado, cr cheese omelet, 1 sausage patty, 1/2 english muffin w/butter(shared bfast w/5 yo ds)
L-baked chicken over salad w/creamy italian dressing & a little shredded cheese
D-?? dh is sleeping after last night shift-I have no idea what his plans are for tonight-hoping he will take me to see The Bucket List!! Maybe dinner w/no kids?????? I'll be good, I promise!! I want to not only fit in the 14's-but LOOK GOOD in them!!

I everyone feels better soon!

Afternoon Y'all!

Kathy: What a GREAT NSV!!!!!!!!! Good for you girl!! I hope you see "Bucket List". I'd love to see it.

Michele: Have a great time today and tonight.

Adlma: Oh, I;m sorry your kiddoes are sick! Is that what the "crying nose" was?

How is everyone doing today?

Today is going OK for me. Hubby and I did some errands and the kids are playing video games right now. We are being laid back today.

I hope y'all have a great drunken Friday trivia night. I'm too old and definitely not a fan of the 80's music, so I'll leave it to you young kids to enjoy!

UNBELIEVABLE !!!!

I talked to my daughter on yahoo today and this is what she told me...

The Wendy's (in Colorado) has been harassing Jens (her friend) 9 y/o daughter. Kylee walked over everyday and got lunch off the 99 cent menu. One day Jen said she had to buy straws, so Kylee thought she would be a good girl and get straws at Wendy's. Well they caught her on tape taking straws without buying a drink. Jen explained that was bad and kylee never did it again. Well the employees started harassing her, they followed her around the store for a month. She still didnt take anything. Then they started searching her bag everyday. Then one day she had enough and told them to leave her alone and they grabbed the bag out of her arms and left marks on her. Jen called the police. Cops said since she stole straws , just to stay away from wendy's. Since they had on tape that she stole 2 straws 2 months ago Kylee has been banned from Wendy's. Well kylee had to walk by Wendy's yesterday to go to the gas station. They were harassing her through the drive thru speaker !!! They were making rude noises at her and stuff when she walked by. Shes freakin 9!!!!!!!!! and she never did it again when she was told it was stealing !!! This was over 2 months ago that she took the 2 straws !!! Jen is emailing wendy's corporate and if they dont do anything she wants me to write an article for the opinion section of the newspaper so that people know they are kid harassing a**holes !!

I would be getting a lawyer !!!!
