Welcome to the February Edition of CLA/GLA

To recap.....On the first of each month we post progress pics with our cla/gla results. You will not be pressured to post them if your not comfortable doing so. Some of us feel we stay more accountable if we do, and it helps that others can see good changes in the update pics that we cannot see ourselves. If you choose not to post them, thats ok, but please take them anyway for yourself to compare updates with. Thats where you will see the changes.

What is CLA/GLA?

Most effective daily dose...
CLA 3400 mg
GLA 1000 mg (Borage Oil)

Some of us prefer the liquid CLA from Netrition. One bottle which is about $23.00 lasts a full month. You just take 1/2 Tbsp a day to get your full dose. Some of us are also trying the CLA Extreme from Netrition @ 5 caps a day. We also prefer to get our Borage Oil from Netrition. It has a higher GLA content, so less pills to take, and more pills per bottle than other brands. So by getting your combo from Netrition, its alot cheaper than taking all the caps from other stores.

How does CLA work?
A: CLA prevents fat from being deposited into the cells by speeding up the body's fat metabolism. CLA also helps the body metabolize existing fat deposits. This fat then returns to the blood stream where it is used as energy by muscle cells and the liver. CLA activates genes that trigger fat cell death, shrinks fat cells, speeds up metabolism.

How does GLA work?
A: Numerous research studies have examined the role of GLA for improving health, specifically in the area of weight loss. GLA from borage oil causes less body fat to accumulate. Borage oil owes its healing power to the presence of essential fatty acids, the most important of which is GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid. (While borage oil is often used interchangeably with evening primrose oil, ounce for ounce, borage oil boasts more than twice as much GLA.)

Guidelines for Use
Taking borage oil with food may boost GLA absorption and minimize unpleasant side effects.
If you take an anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication, check with your doctor before trying borage oil. The are no other known drug or nutrient interactions associated with borage oil.

Possible Side Effects ...
Borage oil may cause loose stools and minor stomach problems.

CLA Q&A

Is CLA Safe to Take With My Thyroid Medications?
There's no evidence that CLA, a food supplement, interacts with thyroid medications, or poses any special dangers to thyroid patients. But you should always discuss any supplements you intend to take with your own physician or practitioner before starting.

Is CLA Only for People with Thyroid Problems?
Absolutely not. The studies have shown that it's effective in general for reducing/converting fat. You don't have to have a thyroid problem -- you just have to be overweight -- to benefit from CLA.

How Much Should I Take?
The study found that 3.4 grams of CLA was needed in order to get the benefits. That's 3,400 mg. Since the various formulas contain a percentage of other oils as ingredients, it's wise to probably calculate how much each pill is delivering to make sure you're getting the full 3.4 grams a day. For example, if your capsule contains 75% CLA, and it's 1000 mg, then you're getting 750 mg of CLA, and would need 5 per day to get to the 3.4 grams level.

How Should I Take It?
The various recommendations differ here. Some recommendations suggest to take it before eating. Others suggest to take it with meals. Take it preferably with lowfat or nonfat milk for maximum protein absorption. Personally, I'm taking it right before I eat with some 2% milk.

Does CLA Have Any Side Effects?
Some people report feeling slightly green or nauseous after taking their CLA, or isolated cases of gastrointestinal upset or loose stools. These side effects typically are reduced when the product is taken with protein (i.e.,with milk), and usually decrease after about 2 weeks taking the supplement.

Usually, in the first three weeks, the abdominal fat "pooch" starts shrinking. Other "fattier" areas (such as cheeks, upper arms, rear end) seemed to be slowly reducing as well. You may notice that your appetite is somewhat reduced. You may feel a bit green after taking the CLA the first couple days, but if you take it with milk, or protein it should eliminate that problem.

paganrn, I had that happen also when I first started taking it. It stopped after a few days

Alisa, yep, its a good thing, lets you know its working

kidsdogsbirds, from what I remember with others that tried that brand, you would need 5 a day

Ok so i just purchased my first bottles of CLA and GLA, i went ahead and took 5 CLA and just 2 GLA. Is it ok to do that, or do you need to work your way up to that dosage? I really can't wait to see the inches drop!

Trisha - Thanks for getting us started again in this new month!!!

I forgot half of mine today! Geez, now I just have to remember to take them! I measured myself on 1-30 so we'll see how I do in the next two weeks, will try not to measure until then! Plus going lower carb, I'm getting out of hand with everything otherwise! BAH! trotts off to take her pills......

I posted this in January thread but I had been taking the combo for about 3 weeks and my stalh broke and I met goal. I did not measure but my size 12's are about to fall off me now.

does anyone here get their CLA by drinking safflower oil? If so, how much would be the recommended amount? Samething for borage oil, how many ounces of this stuff would I need?

Never tried that but how ever you take it you need 3400mg of cla and 500-1000 mg of the gla thats in the borage oil. Read the contents on the back of the bottles for the actual cla and gla content and go from there

Thanks for all your support. I am still taking it I still have plenty of it left. The one thing I did change because I read it in a thread somewhere is to take my combo all at one time instead of spreading it out. I really enjoy this site it has been so helpful in my journey and by far the most friendly.

Do you need to exercise everyday for best results? I have just been doing callanetics every other day so far. I'm waiting til i have enough money to by an elliptical for the cardio.(it's too cold to go walking outside). So if i take this one days i dont exercise will it help any, i'm on Phase 1 of SB.

It does work without exercise, but not the results you would get with some form of exercise. I was going to Curves when I started the combo, and had awesome results. When I stopped going, I still lost but not as fast. You need the exercise to firm as you lose

I read that wrong. looks like your doing ok if your exercising a few days a week. You should do fine

Hi Eireanne,

I lost 53 lbs, most of it without exercising... I think for me, that I do better not exercising, because I get hungrier when I exercise.... but each person is different. However, my metabolism is very low & it takes very little food to keep me going. So, at present I'm out to firm-up & increase muscle so that I can maybe eat a little more.

I love my elliptical! Its so perfect for me, too cold outside in the winter, bears outside in the spring-fall... so I'm not likely to be walking... I also just srarted doing the callan's, will see how that works. Do you do those to the tape? I'm trying to memorize them & do them watching tv... boredom factor...

I do them with the tape, i just can focus better that way, but it dosent take long to memorize it! I think the music in it puts me in a trance lol.

ugh as soon as i have the money i'm getting the liquid CLA, these pills are giant! and keep gettin stuck in my throat (of feel like it at least)

Tiffany, I think you will like the liquid cla much better

Debby, I got those Callenetics tapes and the first exercise where you sit with your leg bent behind you and raise it up and "gently" bounce.......I got a cramp in my hip and was rolling on the floor in agony !!! LOL. I have been afraid to try them again after that I just got the "Fitness Made Simple" tapes where you work out with free weights and I am going to try those. I used to go to the gym and had a personal trainer because of my neck injury, and I did really well with the free weights.

Good for you Ireanne, that you can do that. Its working well memorizing them.

Trisha I know exactly the ones you were attempting! I think it did that to me years ago too! But this time its making my tush really sore! So it must be working.

I was looking for a work-out with hand-weights too, and ran across the threads on callanetics... also the t-tapping sounds really good, so I went to her site & watched some of the exercises on try it before you by it... they are excellent! I might buy that one too. Supposed to get you fit & trim in 15 minutes a day, which would work great with my elliptical training...

I wrote the lady at Ttap about my neck injury, and she sent me some exercises to try before I buy. It hurt so I cant do them. I'm not allowed to raise my arms above my shoulders (C-7 disc fusion) and that knocks out alot of moves

Is this too much?

Can anyone tell me if I am taking too much? I have been taking CLA/GLA and LCing for 2 weeks now. Since i started losing hair, someone recommended that I take Biotin. I also bought some Flax Oil to add to the combination. So this is what I started taking today:

CLA 3 x 1000mg= 3000 mg
GLA 2 x 500mg= 10000mg
Flax Oil 1 only = 1200mg
Biotin 1 only = 1000mcg

Is this ok and also does anyone know the best way to distribute them during the day? Just the CLA/GLA combination would make me nauseous to take it all at once. Any recommendations?

I'd add 1 more cla cap. you need 3400mg a day. its ok to go over a little but try not to go under that. It doesnt matter how you take it, all at once or split it up, just remember to take it all every day. welcome to the thread
