Do you take a multi-vitamin?

If so, which one & why?

How many time a day do you take it?

Have you noticed any health improvements since you started taking it?

If you don't take one, is there a particular reason?

I'm turning into a vitamin/supplement taker. I take one a day carb smart, calcium 2x a day, magnesium, potassium, garlic and will start an omega 3 tomorrow. I also add spirulina to my breakfast shakes when I remember.

Not sure if they help or not. I suppose if I stop for a while I will notice the lack of them.

I just added the garlic and am adding the omega 3 for cholesterol. I won't know if that helps till the next time I go to get the test.

yep - it's the carb dieting one that doesn't have iodine (which i'm allergic to). I'm too lazy to get up and find the bottle though - i keep them in a vitamin container.

THanks for the replies!

Sue, I've heard good things about GNCs Ultra Mega for Women. You take that twice a day?

I'm not taking one right now, though I bought one on clearance at Vitamin World (Rexall 50+ Multivitamin) a while back. I keep forgetting to start taking it. I guess I need to sit the bottle in front of the computer so I can't miss it!

I'm really a big believer in the benefits of supplements. They can make a big difference. BUT ya gotta remeber to take them...

I just take a store brand Multi without iron. I can tell when I don't....I get tired in the afternoons. And I also seem to lose better when I take them.

I actually take Glucobalance which was recommended in the Diet Cure book that you suggested on the boards. I take 2 tablets, 3xs a day or if I know I am going to be really busy, I will take 3 tablets, 2 times a day. I love the book. It is extremely informative. I had to order the glucobalance online though, I was unable to find it here in Philly in any of the stores. I hope this helps!

We take the Costco version of Centrum...

Only one a day, too. Some vitamins are OK to take more than the regular RDA, because the extra is peed out (C, B3, and B5 for example). Others are lipid soluble and can build up to toxic levels in your fat deposits. This is one of the reasons that some folks go through periods of not feeling well at all while in ketosis... Their body is getting too much of fat soluble compounds that are being released when the fat is burned. I guess I'm trying to stress that you should only take the recommended dosage of multivitamins, and there are some out there that are 300% RDA across the board - those should be avoided.

I have heard good things about the GNC too...may try it when the Carb Smart is done

An Equate Womens Formula Multi-Vitamin - I figure I make my kids take one every day - I should too. I take mine at night before I go to bed. I never remember to take anything in the morning.

I take the Nature Made Prenatals right now, along with extra folic acid, Fish Oil supplements, and a baby aspirin.

When I run out of the prenatals, I'll go back to taking the Costco brand multi. Their house products are excellent quality!

My kids take the chewable gummi bear vitamins. My docs totally recommend them, and even my toddler eats them (she only gets a 1/2 dose, though, until she's 2). I took them too when I was in early pregnancy with morning sickness. It was the only vitamin I could keep down.

I take 1 multi-vitamin a day. It's called "One Daily Healthy Weight". It has green tea extract in it. I also take a chewable calcium vitamin. It's a kids vitamin and it tastes like sour patch kids. YUMMY!

I also take the Equate Women's Multi and DH takes the Men's Multi everyday. It says to take 2 a day so split them up between breakfast and dinner. I also take a B-complex and magnesium (helps with cramps when TOM comes along) and extra calcium along with a fish oil (salmon) capsule.

I can tell a difference in my energy levels if I don't take them for a couple of days.

I'd love to try this one! The Diet Cure has to be the most informative & helpful book of it's kind I have ever read...and there have been many! I haven't seen it in any stores around here either.

I agree. A lot of supps will cause problems if taken on an empty stomach. I was thinking about this after I went to be last night. It would be good if all you need to do is change when you take them. Of course, it is also possiblethat you are allergic or sensitive to one of the ingredients in it, in which case you'd need to find out which one & find a supp that doesn't contain it.

The ones with Iron tend to cause the most stomach distress. Sometimes just switching to one without it works.

Yes DiamondDeb. You are so right. I also meant to thank you for recommending the book. Much appreciated. I've learned so much from reading it. Glucobalance has enough biotin and chrominum included in the 6 tablets a day, so I no longer need to supplement these seperately.

Have a great day - Star

DiamondDeb,

I've considered buying the Trytophan supplement mostly because I found it here at a good health food store (Gary's World of Wellness). I was pleased to see they sell it right there and I wouldn't have to bother ordering online and racking up shipping charges. I brought 5-HTP and St John's Wort because it was cheaper and that seems to be working for me during PMS.

Glucobalance was the only supplement I had to order online. I was taking the Atkins Basic3 before ordering the glucobalance. I honestly don't notice a difference when taking Glucobalance. I ordered 2 bottles to try but once they are done I may go back to using the basic3 (since they were down to 99cents at GNC this week).......or I may try the other multi-vitamin that is recommended in that book. I forget the name but it was the second best multi recommended by Julia Ross. I plan on checking it out. Those were the only two I would consider hard to find here in Philly.

I've also reserved the mood cure book at my local library. I don't think I have too much trouble controlling my mood but perhaps I should do a survey and ask others LOL I figured since it was available at the library I would get it because I might get lucky and learn something valuable for the future.

Were there other supplements recommended in the book that you were considering getting if they were easier to find?

Have a great day - Star

Bees, can you talk a little more about your experience with CoQ-10 as a weight loss booster? Why do you think it's helped you to lose weight? How much do you take a day? I've seen 100 mg recommended ... Also, have you found a cheap source? I just learned that 100 mg daily runs around $40 a month!

Have you heard of the supplement L-carnitine? That's supposed to be a fat buster, too.

Thanks!

I am taking CoQ-10 (200 mg) a day. It can be very expensive. The last batch I got was a buy one get one free at Rite Aid. (BTW, anyone who is on a statin drug should be taking CoQ-10!).

I also take Acetyl L-Carnitine and L-Carnitine (because the second is less expensive).

Adding these two supplements to my morning and mid-day routine has really improved my energy and appetite suppression!
