Vit Shoppe brand IS very inexpensive. I came across the idea to even go there in the first place by browsing Sugar Free Sheila's site. I trust her.. BIG TIME. Yes I believe their brand is very good.

As far as my thyroid, my dr office just called me back. My last thyroid test was May 4, 2006 and I've only been tested for TSH and T4. I just requested a FULL thyroid panel (I have the list of all the tests I want-- I'm taking the book with me). I have an excellent rapport with my dr... the nurse said they'll draw the blood at my next appt July 2! woohoo.

I also have to thank NonstickPam.

Allie, Testing tsh and t4 is a waste of time.

You need:
Tsh
FREE t3
FREE T4
Ferritin (stored iron)

you may have to fight for the free's tho. Dont give up!

'normal' reading results are NOT optimal, so you might want to post up to pam or here.

If maint cals are low, you are not properly optimized.

Hey Ileen girlfriend--
YES I have read the same thing in the Diet Cure book by Julia Ross. Also I came across some of your threads in my searches this morning where you indicated this. Trust me, I am insisting on all the tests you listed. I called my ENT y'day, and the nurse called me back. I am scheduled to go in July 2 for bloodwork. I already told her what all I want tested-- she said most Drs just do TSH and T4. I told her 'yes I know... but now I am learning more about thyroid issues and I want EVERYTHING tested.... if you guys don't want to test it then I'll ask for an endo referral'. So I'm going in to talk to my dr (I LOVE HIM, we have a GREAT rapport, but he is an ENT, not an endo-- he did my thyroid surg and my sinus surg). He will have no problem ordering the tests I want, or referring me to an endo.

I just want the test results, so I can decide what to do from there!

Thanks for all of your valuable input.

Also, yes I have been reading what Pam says about it forever. I am also aware of the 'calorie' issue and I am trying to figure out what to do regarding that. Maintenance is HARD.

I can't for the life of me figure out why a person would have to freakin FIGHT for a free T3 test? Like, what does it matter whether they run the test or not? Uh, cuz it's my bod and I wanna KNOW my numbers! jeez. Now i'm getting ticked and I hadn't even talked directly to my dr yet. He is very very cooperative with me and actually kinda 'spoils' me... so I think he'll do what I'm asking.

they are like that cause they (most, no insult to yours) have their heads up their bums. Grrrrrrrr

a normal thyroid produces both t3 and t4 and the body needs both. How do they know you are converting the T4(synthoid) to T3, if they dont test it.

Grrrrrrrrrrr! They think they know it all. grrrrrrrr

i'll get off my soapbox now.

No you are totally right. And I ABSOLUTELY have every right to be extra concerned about it, because 3/4 of my thyroid was completely removed in 2002. So I REALLY need to know ALL of my numbers, since I only have 1/4 thyroid remaining.

I take .175 mcg Synthroid daily..... BUT I did lose all of my weight while taking just Synthroid. My doses were upped as we went along, based on my testing. The last time the dr upped it, he said the T4 was in the 'normal' range but he could up the dose a little... so I am at .175 now.

that is an awful LOT of synthoid for some one of your wt! It sounds like you are NOT converting it at all.

I weight 130 and take 112mcg with 25mcg of cytomel (T3) I have hashi's and I dont convert it.

You might want to also ask for the antibodies to be tested as well.

I take 5 htp at times, and it makes me hungry, but everyone says I am weird where meds are concerned anyhow. L glutamine? I take only when really hungry. It helps sometimes within an hr or so. Anyone else out there? I am not really familar with all of the aminos.

I remember I read about Glutamine and Chromium in DANDR. Dr Atkins has a couple of pages on supplements. I use 1 scoop of glutamine powder in a shake or iced tea almost every day and also use it to prevent muscle soreness after a workout. It is great stuff.

Yes, you can take DLPA & 5-HTP the same day and even at the same time. The recommended timing & doseages for both are below.
  • 500-1000mg DLPA (DL-phenylalanine) first thing in the morning, midmorning, & midafternoon
  • 50-100mg 5-HTP midmorning, midafternoon & at bedtime (100mg recommended for bedtime)
I need to correct this. When only one or the other of these supplements are being used the timing above is correct. Certain combinations require the timing to be slightly changed for best results.

5-HTP should be taken at least 30 minutes before DLPA, tyrosine, caffeine or protein foods.

You can take them everyday to prevent cravings. If you already have cravings you would take the glutamine as suggested in the original post.

If you are taking these supplements only for cravings I would hold off on the 5-HTP. The glutamine & chromium generally do the trick.
  • 500-1500mg L-glutamine first thing in the morning, midmorning, & midafternoon
  • 200mcg Chromium with breakfast, lunch, dinner & at bedtime
  • 50-100mg 5-HTP midmorning, midafternoon & at bedtime (100mg recommended for bedtime)
