Yes, if you're taking it for cravings, take it as recommended in the original post of this thread. At each meal & depending on how bad the cravings are, you might want to take it at bedtime, as well.

DiamondDeb, thanks for this thread. I must have been out of town when it orginiated, but I'm glad it's back. I went to the library yesterday and got The Diet Cure and have to say it is very enlightening about deficiencies of amino acids and their effects on the brain's ability to send the proper signals. I think this information is very helpful and I'm definitely going to begin taking supplements. Thanks again!

Just took an L glut. I cant find the Ltyrosine anywhere. Question. If it is used to treat hyperthyroid, wouldnt that slow me down instead of reving me up?

Chromium definitely works for killing my cravings. I take it in the afternoon to keep my dinner and munchies in check portion-wise. I tend to be hungrier/have cravings late in the day. I have never tried the amino acids but chromium works. I take the picolinate.

You've got your amino acids mixed up. L-Carnitine is used treat hyperthyroid, not L-Tyrosine.

You're welcome, everyone!

Thank you so much for this info. It couldn't have come at a better time for me. I stumbled on this while downing low carb ice cream for breakfast. I'm under so much stress right now (selling my house and moving to Seoul, Korea) and I just couldn't take it. The cravings were OUT of control (and until the ice cream, I was in ketosis).

I am heading out for some supplements today. Hopefully they'll work. Thanks again.

If you overeat to help you deal with emotional pain try adding DLPA at the time you take glutamine.
500-1000mg DLPA (DL-phenylalanine)

DiamondD,

I looked for this supp on the Vita-cost website because my son buys weight lifting supps there and I was placing an order for him. Couldn't find it.

Where do you get this?

I get mine from Vitamin World.

I checked at the site you mention and they do have it. I just did a search for DLPA, it's by Twin Labs. You should also be able to find it at any health food store or vitamin shop.

Deb, do you mean you take 500-1500 mg total or that you take 500-1500 mg three times a day for a total of 1500-4500 mg ?

Bumping this. I found this thread by doing a search.

I have been having a 'Maintenance-nervous-breakdown' lately and I need to get over it. I am still within my Maintenance window, never going over 135 but still I feel myself possibly slipping. I re-read the Maintenance section of DANDR last night and felt like the good Dr was speaking directly to me.

Diamond Deb thank you SO MUCH for your advice in this thread. I am headed to Vitamin Shoppe TODAY to get the supps you suggest.. which are the same supps I read bout in DANDR last night and wrote down.

I have MAJOR FEAR of regaining, and I turn 35 on Aug 17. MENTAL.

Thanks Deb - this post is so helpful. A few days ago I read a similar post by you regarding chromium and felt relief from some of my cravings about 20 min after taking 1000 mg.

I cant thank you enough for reminding all of us there is help.....much better than only relying on ketosis or will power.

Can I take DLPA and 5-HTP in the same day?

I'm glad this info continues to help so many. There is no reason to struggle with cravings if you can get some help with it using these supplements in the correct way.

Yes, you can take DLPA & 5-HTP the same day and even at the same time. The recommended timing & doseages for both are below.
  • 500-1000mg DLPA (DL-phenylalanine) first thing in the morning, midmorning, & midafternoon
  • 50-100mg 5-HTP midmorning, midafternoon & at bedtime (100mg recommended for bedtime)

DEB, THANK YOU. Right after my post, I went to B&N and got The Diet Cure book, then went to Vitamin World down the street and got GTF Chromium chromium poly-nicotinate (NOT picolinate which I have read too many bad things about), l-glutamine, and DLPA. I can say that the DLPA IS a mood lifter...... I took 2 of them (1000 mg), and also took 2 l-glutamine. It was my between meal time.

I am taking as you indicated, and I'll start the book tonight.

I've been reading on DLPA and it appears to be a mood lifter and pain killer (good for headaches). I am VERY headache prone.

You're welcome. I use the same type of chromium as you. I don't really feel that the other is so bad but studies show that this is better for our needs.

The Diet Cure is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it. You'll definitely see results taking supplements are she suggests. I had noticeable results overnight. It was amazing. It is expensive though to take all the supps & I could not afford to keep it up for long.

Let me know what you think of the book.

I didn't try any l-tyrosine because I hadn't read enough about how it affects thyroid yet... I am hypo (due to having my thyroid removed) and take Synthroid.

Tyrosine is sometimes used to slow the thyroid down in hyPERactive patients.

Some people with hyPO benefit from tyrosine, I've heard that others have problems with it. I would suggest asking your doctor first if you are interested in trying it. If you do at some time try tryrosine, be sure to take it at a different time than Synthroid.

If you have: overactive thyroid (Grave’s disease), PKU (phenylketonuria) or Melanoma; Do NOT take: L-tyrosine, DL-phenylalanine, or L-phenylalanine.

Meek, see if you have a Vitamin Shoppe nearby.. I'm sure you do. Their brand is cheaper than others, the store has EVERYTHING, and they don't add crap to the supps.

Allie, I just bought a big bottle of Vitamin Shoppe DL-Phenylalanine. It was very inexpensive. I was wondering if their brand was as good as the "name Brand". It's a great store. They have everything
