CLA and Acne....

Sad but true for me CLA (Liquid) causes acne breakouts for me and not just one zit but many. I have used this for about 3 weeks and for me I think I was having good results, but I noticed that my clear skin (blessed with such) was starting to break out. I for the life of me couldn't understand why. I was getting them in places that I never ever got a pimple. I stopped using the CLA last week and in 5 days my skin is clearing up. I was so hoping that it wasn't the CLA but it looks like it was since I didn't use anything new or eat anything new in the same time frame. Has anyone else notice this? Also do you think if I switch to the pill form, would it be better? I wasn't thrilled with the taste but I did notice body changes.......Ok anyone have a clue as to why this might be happening? I know it's an oil but didn't think it would have these results.......Sami

May I ask if you were using the liquid or the pills? I was wondering if the results would be the same.

I've been taking the pill form of CLA for the past three weeks also and my face is a mess. I even broke out on my neck a couple of times. 2 hours after taking it my face would get really red and the eruptions would get worse. I don't know if it is an allergy or just hormonal but I'm considering stopping its usage.

I started with capsuls (2 mos) and then the liquid (6 wks). No difference in rate of breakouts between the both....my breakouts started after the first week of taking CLA

I take the pill form of CLA. I noticed that my face broke out in the beginning (more similar to a rash than anything). It only lasted a couple of weeks, and now my skin is back to normal. You could always try lowering your dosage for a couple of weeks, and see if that helps. If so, then raise your dosage back up slowly.

Ok now I'm scared! I started taking the capsules yesterday. I don't want my face to break out from this. How has everyone else done with CLA? Flossie

Just a note: Not everyone "breaks out" on CLA. My good friend (fellow low-carber) has taken them for almost a year now and she has not had any problems.

Thanks everyone I thought I was the weird one here. I don't recall reading about anyone else having this problem so I thought I was nuts. Ok now I think I will lay off the CLA for now. I can hide my stomach but was having a hard time seeing thought the paper bag....LOL....Sami

I have been taking the capsules since June and have never had a problem. You might try easing into it with one per day and building up to 4g. Also, taking them with food is recommended as some people say it bothers their stomachs, but I've never experienced that either.

I'd been on Atkins for about 5 weeks, and was beginning to notice how my face was clearing up, due to all the water consumption. Then I started taking CLA, and the acne started back up again. I thought it was because Tom was coming...now I'm wondering if it isn't the CLA. I, also, got a few on my neck...disgusting. So, I've laid off the CLA for now, even though I think it was a major factor in losing about 4 inches of belly fat. So....acne chin? Or melted belly fat? Decisions, decisions. Arghhhhhh.

Well I know for sure that it was the CLA that was causing my face to break out so bad. I've been off the CLA now for a week and once again my face is crystal clear. I also think it may have helped but I won't use it again because of the way it caused my face to break out. I got these big red cystic pimples all over my face and it was getting worst the more I used it......

I wonder if it increases your natural steroid levels (Testosterone, estrogen etc....) I know estrogen is stored in your bodyfat so maybe because you are burning it faster you have more circulating estrogen. Are your TOMs affected?

Funny you ask this question. I started this WOEing in Jan and didn't have a problem with TOM every 28 days on the dot. I started the CLA and used it for about 3 weeks then stoped and now I'm 2 days late on my cycle. I also got H/A's milded but still got them and my PMS this month was like a bear so maybe you are on to something but I won't mess with this again....Sami

Well I have naturally high testosterone levels for a women and have been combatting adult cystic acne lately. Thankfully I am winning with accutane this time. I also have irregular TOMS without the pill and they got even crazier when I first started lowcarb....but usually too short. I used to be a fitness trainer and know that steroids used in bodybuilding also cause acne big time. I was thinking I might try it before. Glad I read this thread. I don't want anything bringing that acne back.

Kellyann, At first I thought it was maybe my thyroid meds being off until someone posted about this. Then it made sense so that is why I stopped it. It's just now that you posted about the TOM that is also answering another question that I have. I also have noticed that my periods are much shorter and lighter....I don't do steriods but am aware of the acne that comes from that but most of the time the patients that we saw had it on their backs also, I didn't have that. I also stopped the flaxseed oil that I took everyday.....

I love this board....just when you think your going crazy there is someone else having the same problem....this is a great place to get info......Sami

Wow!!! nobody mentioned this when I was asking about CLA but of course I didn' ask either... Now I know why I'm having breakouts. I haven't noticed a difference in the 3 weeks I've taken it so I'm going to stop I think. My skins a mess.

Yes that's true about the steroids body builders use. They get acne all over as well. My acne, however, which is related to high T levels, was only on my face (mostly jawline and near ears) and cystic. I have never taken steroids...but they are usually taken with the intent of increasing T levels. It increases your muscle building ability. I do tend to build muscle very easily too. It's just my make-up these days. It wasn't a problem when I was a teen either. Just since childbirth. I would just luv to know why I lose so slowly.

The reason I think no one addressed this is because most of us started to take this around the same time. If it's the CLA thats doing this to you you should clear up in about a week. Now that we are talking about this I've also noticed some other things going on with me that I now have some answers to.....Good Luck...Sami

To tell you the truth I think so but I won't chance taking it again. I think along with the results I got other things I didn't like. I've been a real bear this month (TOM) and I'm not like that. I'm also 2 days late so far so it's doing something....Sami

Hey harley I notice that this thread is from 2004 .. I started CLA in 2003 after studies came out saying that CLA specifically helped with the reduction in belly fat of laboratory mice. I started out at the recommended dosage of 4mg (4 capsules) and took it along with flax oil or fish oil to get a fuller complement of omegas (they work together). I felt like it was helpful for me. I did not experience any breakouts whatsoever ... but I started this when I was 38. The folks posting on this thread may have been younger??

So, after reaching goal, I lowered my dosage by half and now take 2 oil capsules of cla and 2 of fish oil .. so I have been taking cla for almost 7 years and no skin issues whatsoever.

My advice is to google CLA and "belly fat" so you can pull up the studies and maybe try it out and see how it works for you. Maybe a half dosage like I am currently taking would be a good way to start. As far as I recall a LOT of people were taking CLA without any skin issues ...

hth?

p.s. make sure if you buy it, that you buy "Tonalin" CLA.
