21 Day Kickstart Review

The 21 Day Kickstart is a way of eating ("diet") that is designed to help people transition to a plant-based diet. There is no calorie counting or carb counting. It is purely plant-based, and you can eat what you like on it as long as there are no animal products involved.

I discovered this way of eating through Dr. Neal Barnard's book, Reversing Diabetes. From the book website (search for "dr neal barnard reversing diabetes"):

"The book explains how the diet actually alters what goes on in an individual’s cells. Rather than just compensate for malfunctioning insulin, like other treatment plans, Dr. Barnard’s program helps repair how the body uses insulin. It also includes helpful tips on adopting a plant-based diet and more than 50 delicious and easy-to-make recipes."

It made complete sense, and I did resolve my diabetes and high blood pressure and lost 45 pounds eating this way.

He then came out with the book 21 Day Weightloss Kickstart. It's a great book. It's not low-carb, which I need, but I know the low-carb guidelines, so I eat low-carb...he gives you lots of information, menu ideas, and recipes. From the website (search for 21 day weight loss kickstart):

He also has a PBS program, "Kickstart Your Health."

Three or four times a year, PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) hosts a kickstart where anyone can join in for free, you get emails with information, tips, recipes, menu plans, a forum, etc. The next one starts April 2. Search for "21 day vegan kickstart" to sign up.

You can also get information on nutritionmd , if you don't want to wait for the kickstart or the book!

Nice summary Monique! So it is low-glycemic to begin with .. to help diabetics? is that right? and then you further tailored it some to make it strictly lowcarb?

lol I have seen alotalotalot of controversy on lcf here over PCRM over the years .. it is really cool to see an approach that might just blow the anti-veg "for lowcarb reasons" out of the water ... hahahaha I love that!

I will check out the info sources you mentioned just for fun and my own education! Thanks!

Actually, even his reversing diabetes book is not lowcarb....so no, not lowcarb, just plant-based. No restrictions on starchy veggies or grains....which for me, doesn't work, so I restrict myself - I did atkins way back when I was an omnivore, so I understand low glycemic.

The 21 day kickstart is more of an approach to get omnivores to consider a plant-based way of eating, after all, 21 days is not long, but long enough to start to make a habit

What have the objections been to PCRM? They are very much animal protectors, is that it? I'm imagining that's it, what with most lowcarbers being carnivores.

Monique, honestly when I read the objections to pcrm or the agendas of other like organizations , my brain just substitutes "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah" lol! but at the end of the day, I think the way you put it is exactly the objection couched in other arguments that are irrelevant, lol! I just stay out of those arguments - people will defend tooth and nail their justification for just doing what they want to do, yanno? and so they do not have to think about the terrible things going on in this world.

It is probably my own backlash at all the people who constantly attacked me as a young person for vegetarianism (in the 70s and 80s), as if my own personal decision was a bad reflection on their own view of themselves .. so now, older and wiser ... when I see that crap start to surface anywhere, I just shut it down by not being willing to get into their shouting match. I work continually on "doing the right thing" in my life and moving toward doing better and better .. if I am a scary reminder to them that they are not ... well, good, lol!

I love Dr Barnard, he makes an awful lot of sense, however he is way too obsessed with fats.

As a vegan, I am already cutting out all dairy, meat, fish and fowl. I also no longer eat grains while I am trying to shift 30 pounds, or green split peas, so the thought of also not having olives or olive oil, especially as an Italian woman is too daunting and frankly unappealing.

Which is why Dr Fuhrman and I can't see eye to eye either.

I have no problem at all having a tablespoon of evoo daily.

But that is just my humble opinion.
