questions for the veg heads ;)

I have been on this crazy diet since 3/7...went to a chiropractor and he put me on a diet that is meat free...PS I've lost almost 40 lbs! Anyway, I loved eating atkins (meat and all) but I just could not get back on the wagon so to speak so I sought out this Dr. Now I'm ready to continue my wt loss doing Atkins but I just don't know if I want to do the meat thing.... I have been using morningstar griller crumbles as a substitute and griller burgers- but they are soooo expensive. So I'm at a loss. Now for the questions.....

Do any of you use meat like substitutes? Have any of you gone from veggie to meat eater w/o having a system meltdown?? Any fish eaters among you??

I am planning on switching things up mid June. I promised myself I would not be fat when I turned 50... I have a few more weeks before the big day

I was a vegetarian for over 25 years. Started eating meat for health and moral reasons. Never had a problem with it. I could never have lost the weight I did doing only vegetarian. I know some can, but I couldn't.

I lost 108 lbs eating vegetarian + occasional fish on Atkins -- and have been maintaining on that as well. I believe you can do it any way you wish as long as you sort out your protein sources.

I like to have tofu, some of the morningstar products also .. I think if you compare the veggie burgers to meat patties you will find the prices pretty comparable ..

I eat boca burgers. Most of the meat substitutes I have to doctor up a lot.

There is a recipe for faux meat on here that uses tvp and chia that is pretty good, if you eat soy.

You can make your own meat substitutes, depending on what all you can eat.

If you use bulgar, it works great. Beans make good meat subs too.

Mushrooms and black olives are very meaty. Oats are good added to beans for veggie burgers. If you go to the veg web site (use google to find it), there are piles of recipes. Most of them can be modified to be moderately low carb.

Since you are not adverse to eating meat, some tricks to doctoring up the meat substitutes are adding beef/chicken broth or boullion and bacon grease. They really improve the taste of vegetarian faux meats a lot. For boca burgers, I cook them (fry) in bacon grease and cilantro and get them crispy on each side, otherwise they taste a lot like cardboard to me. Spices, lots of spices help.
