Question about taking Synthroid before blood test

I always take my 50 mcg Synthroid as soon as I wake up in the AM even when I have a blood test later that morning. Should I not take my dosage until after my blood test? It just occurred to me that taking the pill a couple of hours before the test could skew the results. Is that true?

It does in horses. My horse takes thyroid medicine and I always have to discontinue for 24 hours before a blood test so the medicine won't influence test results. I would check with my doctor to be sure.

It does make sense and I don't think it would hurt if I waited a couple of hours to take my pill.

I always take my thyroid meds as I normally do before each blood test--and my endo has never indicated otherwise.

Keep in mind that Synthroid is a long-acting Rx--it takes effect slowly over time, and each dosage doesn't have an immediate impact as T3 (Cytomel) does.

I was told to take it like normal, even before a fasting blood test.

Yes, take as normal when you wake up, cause they're testing to see how you're doing on your current dose of hormone replacement.... how optimized you are.

At least that's how it is with Synthroid. As another poster mentioned, it's a long lasting RX. So missing it, or taking it, on the morning of testing won't make a wit of difference. Not sure about how it would affect a person who takes T3? I used to take, .5mcg of Cytomel along with my morning synthroid, and always took it as normal before any thyroid test. I've found that as I've gotten older, that the Cytomel gives me heart palps, even when I'm still in the normal range for T-3 or TSH, so had to drop the Cytomel. After that, I needed a larger dose of Synthroid, but that doesn't seem to aggravate the palps.

Good luck to you with your tests.

Taking T3 too close to a blood test will skew the results. Not so with T4. I get tested about 5 hours after I take them.
