Anyone heard this?

My mom hurt her shoulder so I took her to the Dr today. She also uses this clinic for her thyroid tests etc. She had a checkup for her thyroid back in August and Nurse prac said her levels were "Normal" ok we all know "Normal" isn't always Normal! They didn't do anything but a TSH for one thing which irritates me! My mom never got her numbers when the nurse said Normal. So I asked the Dr today what her TSH number was. It was 4.2. She is having a Horrible time losing weight, tired, dry skin etc. (she doesn't LC though i've tried over and over) Anyway the dr said that was a Good number for my mom due to her age. He said that at 63 a TSH any lower could cause Tachacardia or other heart problems. I'm No expert but i've never heard this before. Anyone?

I have heard something like that. I was turning 50 and my than dr told me I couldn't start armour because it would cause bone loss and heart problems. She isn't my dr anymore.

I am not an expert, but I think he is full of it.

That's what I thought too! I can see Not getting carried away with lowering her TSH to say 1 but to say that 4 is Normal is nuts to me Plus that i'd hurt her heart!

I am 60 and I take a goodly dose of T3. My endo fights with me about increasing it, but never mentioned age as part of the equasion.

I've noticed that a lot of doctors are extremely cautious about thyroid hormones because of the potential for cardiac issues.

But you may want to get a second opinion.

I am hypothyroid, take T4 and T3--and my TSH is typically below 1.0 (my endo's ideal)--0.44 and as low as 0.23.

I am 72 and have never gone 'hyper' with such a low TSH, nor have I had any cardiac problems.

Most good thyroid doctors know that the 'numbers' that are ideal are different for individuals and that symptoms are important. That is, someone can have severe symptoms with a TSH of 3 or 4, while others would be fine. Good thyroid doctors will treat symptoms and consider the lab values as indicators rather than absolutes.

Thanks everyone! I'm Trying to get my Mom to go to my Endo. But so far she's resisting. She's old school where ya take what the Dr says as Gospel.
