Starting over.

Hi everyone. I haven't been here in a while. I guess that's good, cuz that means things have been going well. :)

Has anyone had their doctor take them off all but a very small dose of thyroid meds in order to "start over?" The last year has been a roller coaster of ups and downs, and this is after 20+ years of steady levels on the same dose of thyroid replacement. My doctor wants me on 25 mcg of Synthroid for about 10 weeks and then have labs done, to allow everything to wash out of my system. I'm more than a little worried about being on that itty-bitty dose for that long. I had some serious hyper symptoms the last few weeks, so I probably won't start feeling bad right away. And, thankfully, they said if I start feeling like crap before then, to let them know. I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna last that long.

Anywho, I'm just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. I love this doctor, a naturopathic doctor, and I think he's really trying to find out what's going on, but I'm not looking forward to the next few weeks!!!

Ugh, I feel your pain!
My doc took me totally off Syntheroid because she wants me totally hypothyroid for a whole body scan.(I had my throid remove because of a cancerous tumor)I love my doc too but I'm feeling sluggish, sleepy, fuzzy brained and I'm cold all the time...and I've only been off it for 2 weeks but thankfully only 2 more to go.
I wish you luck!

update

I only lasted one week on the low dose (25 mcg) of Synthroid. I could tell after about three days, that something was not right. I checked my labs after just one week and they showed I was VERY hypothyroid. So, my levels couldn't have been too high, because there's no way they would have tanked that fast, after only one week.

Also, because I could never get a doctor to tell me whether or not I had Hashimoto's, I also checked TPO antibodies and thyroglobulin antibody. Low and behold, I do have Hashimoto's. This explains SO much! I went to talk to my compounding pharmacist, who is fabulous, to get his advise for diet and supplements, then came home and made another appointment with my doctor.

Even with really great doctors, you have to be in charge of your own healthcare, especially when you know something's just not right. :)
