Is Ketosis Possible While on Armour?

Hi Everyone,

I'm day 2 into treatment with Armour thyroid medication. 30 mg/ 2x day. I will be adding in Cytomel in 2 weeks.

I had been on induction for extended period, and I'm noticing that my ketostix barely turn pink now. I'm frustrated, because ketosis was working (although due to hypothyroid weight loss was SLOW).

I am happy that this medicine will help my hypothyroid, but I CANNOT gain wait right now. I'm going on a trip to Europe in 3 weeks - a trip that will be very special - and to gain back lost weight before the trip will be devastating. I have not changed my diet at ALL. I eat basically the same thing every day:
scrambled eggs with avocado, gouda, bacon.
green salad with olive oil
70 mins elliptical and light weights
70 oz water
salmon for dinner. sometimes no dinner.

I've kept eating the same thing and my sticks that used to be dark purple barely register pink. I'm disappointed and frustrated and need advice.

Can everyone who has experience with ketosis WHILE on Armour (and cytomel) let me know if it's possible to remain on ketosis while on these medications?

Thank you so much.

The brightness of the pink depends on how much water you are intaking. If you are pink, no matter how dark, you are in ketosis. The lighter the pink, the more water you are drinking. Is it possible with the hot weather that you are drinking more than before?

Thank you GreenGeeny,

It's possible, but I don't think I drank too much water yesterday, I was running around and usually if I don't drink too much water it's even darker. I just got a call back from my Dr., who says it should be fine. Are you on Armour or thyroid medication, and have you had issues with medication and achieving/sustaining ketosis?

Thyroid hormone prescriptions like armour and cytomel do not interfere with ketosis. You should actually lose better on medication if you were hypothyroid before.

I take Levoxyl and cytomel and I lost weight, got the goal, and have been maintaining for years now.

Don't worry too much about the shade of ketostix, they are affected by many things that have nothing to do with weight loss- like how hydrated you are and how much dietary fat you are eating.

Hotpants...I am on thyroid meds. I take levothyroxin. The generic of Armour. I want to get it checked though because I may be one of those people that cant be on the generic...I have been on it for 8 years now, and instead of my weight lowering it has risen as the years have gone on. I have an appointment with an endocrinologist to have it checked out.

There are several good posts on why urinalysis/keto stix might not give a wholly accurate picture of your state of ketosis: http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/ma...l#post16508547 and there are several other useful posts in that thread.

nolcjunk and greengeeny,

Thank you so much for reaching out. I was just diagnosed with hypothyroid and was sad to learn about it, but it did explain so much regarding how low I'd been feeling. Thank you for the reassurance. I'm scared, don't know what to do. Just sad about it. And watching myself very closely, because up until 2 days ago didn't take anything other than midol for wretched cramps every month. So it's a lot for me to take in. And I really appreciate your responses.
My TSH is 4.6
I am currently taking 30 mg/ 2x day. I will be adding in Cytomel in 2 weeks.
I was also prescribed progesterone for awful periods. Haven't taken it yet.
Was given D, L Phenylalanine. Scared to take this.
Was given Adren-All (Dr. said my adrenals were shot) Just took 2. They're fine. Mainly just vitamins b,c, etc.
Was given Adrene Vive. took 1 last night. no big deal.

This is a lot to take when I've basically never taken any supplements or meds. I only have 20 lbs to lose. I'm sensitive to all of this new stuff in my body, kind of freaked out.

greengeeny, Levothyroxin is T4 Only, so it's not the generic of Armour which has T1, T2, T3 and T4 in it. You need to see current Free T4 and Free T3 levels to see where you are.

HotPants, it takes 6 weeks to get optimized on thyroid hormone replacement. It seems odd that they'd add in T3 (cytomel) after only 2 weeks. I'd think they'd let you get optimized first on the Armour, which has both the T4 and T3 in it, then see the next set of labs to see where you need to go.

I'm on 125 mcg of Armour twice a day and have no problem getting into ketosis.

princessmommy 07-12-2013 03:54 PM

I take Armour too. I don't use the ketosis test strips though. Best Thyroid med i've Ever been on!

ravenrose 07-12-2013 04:07 PM

don't worry about it. it's possible to lose plenty of weight low carbing whether you are in ketosis or not. sometimes there is too much emphasis on that. just do what you know you need to do.

the thyroid meds will only help, not hurt, so relax.

As everyone else said, Amour should help not hurt your weightloss. My DH has been on it since Feb, his doc upped his dose after 3 months. He goes again at the end of this month and thinks he needs it increased again. It has helped DH lose weight better than without. I agree not to worry too much about ketosis, especially don't worry about using ketostix. Just stay on your eating plan.

Thank you so much you guys,

It's end of day 2. For the first time in many years, my workout tonight didn't completely exhaust me. I can't believe it. I'm so happy. I'm just sad that I didn't get checked out sooner: I've felt run down for a long time but just thought it was because that was how I was: just not as peppy as others. It wasn't really me. Ok, I will unhook from the "purpleness" of that ketostick, and give it time. And enjoy the fog being lifted. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'll keep you posted? :)

greengeeny 07-13-2013 10:18 PM

Thanks for the update about the levothyroxin. I only thought it was a generic because of what other people have told me on this site! I am still getting my tests done this time with the endocrinologist. I have known about my hypo thyroid for 8 years now, and only seen my family practitioner. Didn't even know there was a specialist for thyroid issues until recently.

Ntombi 07-13-2013 11:52 PM

Levothyroxine is a generic, but not of Armour. It's the generic of Synthroid.
