My new doctor listened!!!

She agreed that my levels were not optimal and thinks I may benefit from medication.
Not once did she tell me I was just a tired mom!

I don't have my paperwork with me at work, but I'll tell you more tonight.

For now, I am just happy that someone listened to me.

That is SO great----I know just how you feel. That happened to me last month and I can't even describe how much better things are now. Hope you are better and better--

I'm SO happy to hear that. Now, with all the fam and friends I have in Philly...if this doc is giving you natural thyroid (Armour, Naturethroid), OR giving Cytomel WITH T4 not just throwing some synthetic T4 atcha (synthroid, levoxyl, levothyroxine, etc.) Can I PLEASE have you post with the name of the doctor? (No need though if it's just T4...but thanks anyway).

Psmileyf 05-21-2013 05:29 PM

Man, it is just T4. I didn't know what to ask for, I was happy for anything :(
Now, I am sad again!

Lokarbiebarbie 05-22-2013 04:05 AM

Well, don't be 'yet'. Most of us start out with little bits of T4 (.25 to .5) and then gradually retest (this means FT4, FT3 NOT TSH) and if the FT4 comes up but then the FT3 is still under say halfway, than T3 is either added, or patient switches to another 'hormone' like Armour.

That didn't happen to me when in PA (16 years on .5 T4...struggling all the way)...when I finally researched enough (online is great, especially stop the thyroid madness) and moved here to IN..I found a thyroid doctor. Of course working in the 'patient advocacy' biz helped also.

Keep insisting on FT4, FT3...that way you'll catch it if the FT3 is 'in the dumps'...and if the doc still says 'NO' you can move on. There is now a Holtorf center in PA...many are flocking to it.

Cool- thanks for the information.
I'll wait and see if this helps at all. I have my lab paperwork, I'll have to see what she orders.

Lokarbiebarbie 05-22-2013 08:01 AM

But still research yourself...seriously...I would still be very sick if I hadn't done the research and INSISTED (nicely, with a smile and armed with specific information..like maybe WHY TSH isn't used to titrate incoming hormone).

Most of my family and friends from your area are now making the trip to the Holtorf center (they get their OWN FT4, FT3 from a reputable online health lab that sends them to a lab near them if their doc won't do those!... I've used healthcheckusa ..you order, pay online, and they send you to a lab near you and report back to you...and a FT4, FT3 and TSH is under 100 bucks...yet a doctor's lab can request up to 240 for those out of pocket).

Speaking of healthcheckusa. They're having a 10% off sale for all labwork, 5/23 - 5/31 with discount code Memorial13. Sign up and get notifications of discounts.

My primary care doctor is great about labs...she will run anything I ask her to.
She just won't treat thyroids. I bet she'd be awesome at it though!

Lokarbiebarbie 05-23-2013 05:41 AM

I have three doctors who will run any labs. But they suck at thyroid. If I bring any one of them a TSH, FT4, FT3...they will just base the entire thing on the TSH...and once when the FT3 was just one point in side bottom range....they all said 'Oh, that's fine, you really don't NEED that hormone anyway'. And then I decided I really didn't need their services anyway. :)

My follow up appointment is this Friday!
I had follow up lab work at 8 weeks after I started medicine with no significant changes.
So, I'm going in this time prepared.

What do I ask for to make me feel better??
