"gaming" our lab tests??
Dear All,
I've heard that if you stop your levothyroxine and liiothyronine (T4 and T3) for three days before a blood test, your TSH levels will rise a bit.

Why would I "game" my labs this way, you ask? Because my doc is trying to take me off T3! When I was in the UK, an endocrinologist put me on 100mcg levothyroxine and 20mcg T3 ---I felt good for the first time in a long while, and the weight came off too!

But now I am back in the US and this doc saw my TSH low---despite midrange FT4 and FT3--- and insisted on taking me down to 5mcg of T3. I'm already feeling worse. I begged for more, and got "we'll take more labs then" ---so as you see, I am hoping I can show a higher TSH that will result in a prescription of 10mcg at least.

I KNOW the long term solution is a new doc, but I am in a smallish city in north florida, and this is actually the best one in town. On these boards I just got a referral to another one 2.5 hours away, which I will definitely try (thank you!) but until then---will stopping the meds for three days work to raise TSH? is it safe? i knowit will be unpleasant? Anyone tried this? Thanks to all for good help and thoughts,

You were given Fedosky...and that is wonderful....you'll soon be in good hands hopefully. Some don't have to stop the T4...only T3///in MY personal case, I'd have to go a week or better without...either...my TSH STARTED out at .0223...yet I felt horrid and when they checked my FT's...I didn't have ANY FT3...and just barely inside the range on FT4.

That suggests it's my pituitary that's involved and given 'wrong' signaling...but I went through five docs till I found one that 'got it'.

You'll be 'ok' (not die, not have lasting effects for life, etc.) without that higher dose you were on...until you get in to Dr. Fedosky's I'm sure...no, you won't feel GREAT...but ....it'll hold you. After all, those facing certain uptake testing RAI, etc. have to go off ALL meds for quite some time to have the test.

Thank you so much---going to call fedosky TODAY! It sounds as if it is well worth the drive. Bye for now---
