Thyroid tests scheduled
I've been dealing with very high LDL (248) since January. As a recap, my latest lipid profile in March 2012 showed total chol 331, HDL 67, Trig 84, LDL 248.
Since January I've been trying to figure out why my LDL is so very high. I've been stalled in weight loss since June/July 2011. I stopped my pravastatin in July 2011, but never expected the huge jump in LDL (it doubled) while LCing. After doing some research, I'm thinking this could be a thyroid problem. I do have some symptoms - ice cold feet, thinning very dry hair, very dry skin, exhausted all through December and January. I upped my carbs slightly at in February hoping to see some improvement. I asked for a VAP test, but my doctor botched the order and I got was another lipid profile ![]() This Thursday I'm going back for a VAP test, TSH, T4, T3, Free T3 and something else I can't read. I hope these tests will shed some light on what is happening with me. I'm not taking any iodine supplements, but have been using a very small amount of table salt, cut down on raw broccoli, etc. Anything special I need to do before these tests? The VAP test requires a 12 hour fast and I hope this will not mess up the thyroid tests. Anything I should avoid eating or drinking for the next couple of days?? Thanks for any input |

Maybe the other one you were thinking of was to check for Hashimoto's? TPO Antibodies test. You don't need the regular T3 test either, just the Free T3 and Free T4 as Ileen said.

Thanks for the info. I think the doctor might have ordered the test for Hashimoto's but I'm not sure. I asked for the FT3 and FT4, but can't read his writing so I'm not sure exactly what is there. He botched up the order for my VAP test which I had in March so who knows if this order is correct.
If I don't get the FT3 and FT4 I am going to go the healthcheck route and order them myself. Not that I want to be hypothyroid, but it would explain several things: very elevated LDL (with everything else being good), slowly gaining weight since January inspite of trying very low carbs (20 total), lower fat, lower calories all to no avail. |

When you go to get the tests he wrote up, Ask them first what it says. You can always refuse anything you don't want (like Total T's).
If you end up going the healthcheckusa route, don't forget to use code 12345 at check-out for the 10% discount, and the test you want there is the Thyroid Panel II. Last edited by watcher513; 04-19-2012 at 12:43 AM.. |

I just returned home from the lab and think what the doctor ordered was
TSH, T3, free T3 and free T4 (yay), and T3,RU. Not sure what the T3,RU is but I'm glad he at least got the free T3 and free T4 on the order. |
