Armour doesn't take that long. If you dont let it dissolve, than you are looking at swallowing it, then waiting an hour to eat...THAT takes longer. No calcium, iron for four to six hours away from the med.

Christie, I always remind them at the pharmacy that I want name brand Armour, and I always open the bottle and check to make sure that's what I got before I leave! They love to pull that switcharoo on you, even when your doc specifies name brand!

I take generic and do just great on it. I switched about six months ago. OH, and if you start on the generic, stay with it, it's not necessary to switch to the brand UNLESS you see a difference in your labs. And you can't request Armour Thyroid brand if your doc didn't sign DAW (dispense as written as opposed to may substitute). I saw a little drop in my FT4 when I switched over (but waited till the first generics were....out of the way and Qualitest had finalized) and then no difference in my FT3. Some are saying the generic is stronger in T3, but we know that it has the SAME ing. as brand.
When they first came OUT with the generic (3 years ago) we were leary, but now that it's been standardized...I see no reason to pay an EXTRA 25 dollars for brand (that's right...my insurance company charges FULL PRICE for brand Armour, and generic co-pay for generic). It's more important to stay with what you started with...unless you want to switch...then you need to be seeing labs every six weeks for two times at least on the switched med. Pam

wow, how could I miss this long thread for this long.
Pam says read it all and all q's will be answered. I guess my first reading of Crime and Punishment will have to be put on hold. Interesting that one link you gave for a friend in s.e. PA is right here where I am in Narberth - walk past it to the Wawa constantly. now, I take generic natural thyroid and b/work values good...but this under the tongue thing, Proper T3,T4 tests,etc..have me curious. See you in a week, I'm gonna read the whole thread..... (good stuff in here, Fyodor can wait for winter reading) -mack

TSH is the first thing to be 'changed' by just a teensy bit of incoming Armour Mack....so doing dosage by TSH is quite the 'gamble'. TSH just tells you the pituitary knows the incoming hormone is there, but taking actual tests of the actual hormones (FT4, FT3) shows exactly how much thyroid hormone you are using.
Yeah, it's quite a long thread, isn't it? LOL Pam |

I don't want Cytomel...from ANYWHERE. And I don't approve of people self medicating either (which is what buying it from overseas would entail...no doc would let you do that). I've seen people in hospitals that had self medicated. I have a list of 12 meds that I have to take daily (and that's not counting the oral steroids and the upcoming immune response drugs) and I use as little synthetic, made in a test tube meds as I possibly can.

my doctor orig was going to put me on cytomel. its t3 only. since i wasnt converting very well i thought maybe it would be better than armour. i can get it cheaper over there than i can here. like 30 bucks cheaper. i dont have insurance, so any savings i can get would help as im not working either.
are you on disability? i have been considering going on disability as i cant keep a job, and i can barely function at home. |

I've been waiting four YEARS to get disability (SSDI, NOT SSI)...after working 29 years. Good luck. No, I don't want anything synthetic in my hormones...Cytome is synthetic T3 and I've not YET seen ANYONE taking Cytomel ONLY that has done well.

I've never heard of taking Cytomel alone. I took it with Synthroid, but what really changed my life in the right direction is Armour. I am on Armour now and have felt better than I have in YEARS. I've been on it about 6 months now.

Many scientists attribute the 'more normal human' feeling with Armour to it's T1 and T2 (although they don't really know what action those two hormones take, they know WE make them in our own bodies). Armour comes closest to simulating what our own thyroid make and how they work.

Here is some info about the causes of high ferritin: A high ferritin level and a normal serum iron level might indicate liver disease from infection or alcoholism, chronic inflammatory disease (such as arthritis or asthma), hypothyroidism, and type 2 diabetes. A high ferritin level combined with a high serum iron level may be a sign of hemosiderosis (an accumulation of iron in some of your tissues). A high serum ferritin level, high serum iron, and low TIBC may be caused by hemochromatosis. http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:...s&ct=clnk&cd=1 Some links to past threads about iron overload: ADA: Iron Predicts Diabetes Risk Study: Some Diets Contribute To Iron Overload http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/sh...=iron+overload Linda |

Mamzelle, flax may not be a problem if cooked, but that brand of hot cereal has soy protein, which is a major problem for thyroid.

Chrissie, some show antibodies later on in life when they don't right away. But many have just clinical hypothyroidism (that's any type that's NOT Hashi's).
Yep, soy is bad no matter how ya slice it, lol. If you want hot flax, just get flaxmeal and put boiling water in it, some Davinci's, a little heavy cream...OR make flax muffins (the Dobie muffins are WONDERFUL and not hard to make). Pam |

I don't bake, and don't know if just plain flax meal can be used as a cereal? It's not that I "'want hot flaxmeal''. I'm just missing hot cereal and saw the flax cereal ad accidentally when on Netrition. I wasn't even thinking about it nor looking for it, it just hit me in the eye so my objective isn't flax meal, but any hot cereal that I'd be able to eat.

Was it on THIS thread that someone said they make Toots Shore's cheesecake. Are they still around.... I asked for the recipe but never heard anything, and that's something I'd like to try to make with a very paper thin layer of crust so I can eat it Anyone remember who that was?

Yep, flaxmeal is used as cereal by MANY of the lowcarbers at this site, do believe there are quite a few 'recipes' for it. I eat oats about three times a week (after my workout...only steel cut from a mill near me who ONLY do oats at this mill) so I don't 'Jones' for hot cereal anymore. I figured since I'm FORCED to do the workout (heh heh...cuz my joints and autoimmune diseases respond well to exercise and not to sedentary activity..also gets my lungs to work a bit harder), than I need a 'reward'...that's where the 1/2 cup of steel cut oats comes in.
I thought there was a brand of flaxmeal cereal commercially made without soy in it? But that was quite some time ago, before I started lifting weights, I used to take three, four tablespoons of the Bob's Redmill flaxmeal, put a bit of boiling water in it (just add until it's a decent consistency...some people hate the 'slimy-ness' of it)and Davinci syrup and eat it...I also found that if you put a little almond meal in it Mamzelle, it's not all slimy...more of a 'Maypo' consistency...you should try it...try and find just a little package of flaxmeal, OR grind the flax seeds in a coffee grinder. There is Gram's Gourmet Cream of Flax Cereal. I like the cinamon toast flavor. The ingredients are: Whey Protein Concentrate, Gloden Flaxseed Meal, Wheat Bran, Oat fiber, Freeze Dried Coconut, Natural Flavors, Salt. I will try to see if Netrition has it. I have one local health food store that carries it. You could try searching for Gram's Gourmet too.
