Almond Milk & Thyroid

I recently read an article online which said almond milk can present risks for those with low thyroid, since almonds are considered goitrogens and they inhibit thyroid function as they interfere with iodine intake.

Has anyone used almond milk and had any issues with it? If so, what do you use as an alternative (besides cow or soy)?

I've never heard of almonds being goitrogens. I eat almonds all the time and have never had any thyroid issues with it--but that may be because my hormone supplements have been optimized while I've been eating almonds.

I was surprised, as well, when I read the article. I never figured almonds would fall into that category.

I use unsweetened coconut milk myself. For me, the almond milk caused inflammation....I'm guessing that most people don't have that issue.

The article bases the assertion that almonds are bad for the thyroid because they 'inhibit iodine intake.'

I'm not hypothyroid because of iodine deficiency--I have Hashimoto's.

And, according to Pam, there hasn't been any hypo from iodine deficiency in many years in the U.S.--it's mainly a problem in 3rd world countries.

So I don't think we need worry about almonds.
