We don't know. She already had diabetes, and weighs well over 350 pounds. And is STILL 'mad' at me for losing weight and doing that 'Atkins thing that's going to kill her!".

Sometimes relatives have the hardest time dealing with our WOE.

You are so tiny now! She still thinks you did something wrong? Geesh!

Besides, who is on dialysis -- you or her?

Unfortunately, with diabetes one of the possible pitfalls is kidney failure. Some people can live with it for years, if it happens.

When she was in her 40's the doctors pleaded with her to take injectable insulin, and she REFUSED. Lived with us for a few years and I'd leave for work in the am, with a whole loaf of bread on the counter, and come home to four slices. She was out of control with the carbs.

Well, she's 73 now, and has lost the left leg to diabetes, and at one time she 'had to' lowcarb cuz that's all she would get from our place (and I'm tellin' ya...when I started LC'ing, EVERYTHING not on plan was thrown!) and after three weeks, she felt GREAT. She just couldn't do it as a lifetime plan, sigh.

I do remember her having fasting BG of 99 for a LONG time though...and so does DH and we go a step further with DH every year for further testing to make SURE he's not 'going there'. I know her's is type II and all...but it's still 'in the family'.

It's sad. Sad that older people didn't have this information sooner, and now it's too late. Sad that since this information is coming to them later in life that they think it's malarkey.

I want to help my mom and dad but I'm dancing around it --- I don't want to scare them off. My mom keeps gaining weight and my dad's dr. just told him he has a 'touch' of diabetes and didn't counsel him on diet (not that the counseling he would have given him would have been worth anything.)

I am hoping that they get curious from me and my ds losing weight. When I was over there this week I saw a huge container of honey sitting next to a loaf of bread. They just don't know what they are doing to themselves . . .

We are going out to eat with them today -- Mexican. I will be passing up the chips and having a fajita plate without the tortilla wraps. I'm sure they'll notice. Maybe it will open up a door to conversation.

I just called to check on my labs because I couldn't stand waiting anymore. The thyroid and RA tests are not back.

However my total cholesterol has jumped from 163 (last Fall) to 224! It's never been this high! I've always had low cholesterol. It's been 135 before -- and that's TOTAL.

Here's the breakdown:

224 Total Cholesterol
82 Triglycerides
54 HDL
154 LDL

Does this mean all those eggs I've been eating are raising my cholesterol? Or does it mean my thyroid is so out of whack it's raising my cholesterol?

I''ve greatly reduced my coffee to barely 1 cup (by diluting my leaded coffee with unleaded) and still have chest pains.

She said the Rheumatoid Arthritis test will be back tomorrow. The Free T3 (that's what they're waiting on) won't be back until maybe Friday.

If everything is 'normal' my only recourse is to try Wellbutrin.

I'm just so gosh darn tired! I'll try anything.

Get your Atkins book out. It clearly says that unless you've been strictly lowcarbing (and I mean NO cheats strict per the book) for six months, your cholesterol may go up a little before it goes down a lot.

ETA: I'd certainly not let a doctor 'push' me for statins if mine were where yours is either. Go to the Main Lobby and post the chol. numbers you have.

Yes.

If my thyroid is 'normal' and all the rest of my bloodwork is normal -- that's the only thing she thinks it could be -- fatigue caused by depression.

If I don't have sleep apnea, which I don't think I do.

Okay -- I've been strict since day 1, preparing all of my own food. (I'm a stay-at-home mom, so I'm just cooking everything that I eat now.)

But I've only been LCing for 5 weeks. So you think I should hold her off for another 5 months? I'm not about to take statins anyway! Pshaw!

TEST RESULTS ARE IN:

TSH 2.65
Free T3 2.68
Free T4 1.15

She said these numbers were good. (I have that appt. at the end of Sept. with the endocrinologist -- so we'll see what he says then.)

Rheumatoid Arthritis tests were negative. (Yay!)

So . . .

She's ordering a Sleep Study and if that is negative we'll try Wellbutrin.

She said, "Let me encourage you to get out there an exercise every day." I said, "I'm having trouble driving the speed limit. I have to FORCE myself to speed up to drive the speed limit. I'm that tired and sluggish. I feel like someone slipped me a Valium and my legs feel like lead. I can't even go walking --- I'm THAT tired." She then asked if I drank sodas, "No."

She said the memory loss could be sleep apnea or depression. So . . .

I'm going to have a sleep study.

She also said my LDL was too high and I needed to go over to AMA website and read about cholesterol. I told her I'd only been LCing for 5 weeks and expected to see a spike in my numbers. She said we'd test again in 6 months.

What do you think about my Thyroid numbers?

Well, I already had feedback from two VERY experienced hypothyroid patients on this 'group' and this doctor. Neither of them stayed longer than just to get copy of labs and move ON..both were told to have a sleep apnea study done (well, sure doc...here, I'll just give you the money cuz we know that's all ya want' said one), and both were 'just fine and dandy'. Only they both have Hashimoto's hypothyroidism.

Well, it looks like my plan will have to be waiting on the endo that I have an appt. with at the end of Sept. (Grump! Stomps foot!)

It's just so depressing -- thinking about feeling this way until probably October.

i'd be researching more and not waiting on just the endo, who in most cases arent good with thyroid. VERY few are..

call a compounding pharmacy or two in your area and try to get some recommendations for drs that do natural hormone replacement and script natural thyroids.

Im sorry you are not well. We all know all too well how this process goes.. sometimes we can direct folks first out and other times, its trial and trial till you/we find a good one.

I got this endo's name from the compunding pharmacy. I really think this endo will be good -- my dr. tried to sway me against him by saying he's "far left and 'out there.'" So I'm SURE it means he'll treat me aggressively!

I just called and they said there are still no cancellations. My appt. is Sept. 23.

I have a case going to trial and TONS of work and I just want to cry because I can't THINK to do my work. I'm so tired. :tears:

Beezer, well, at least you know now that your labs are NOT good and that you do have thyroid issues...that's a start. "Sleep apnea, exercise" Gaahhh...so tired of doctors not recognizing real thyroid problems when they see them.

I tried 3 docs on the 'top thyroid doc' lists too who were of no use to me. I've also called compounding pharmacies and gotten same bad results. It feels at times like threading a needle in a haystack, but Beezer, you WILL find that doctor who will help you, do NOT give up. I found one who was open to working with me and I was able to actually educate her--they are out there! Mine was a metabolic/obesity doctor--not an Endo either.

If you want to chat, just PM me!

You are so sweet! Thank you!

This endo that I found is Dr. Bhushan at the Metabolic Center and I think he's 'the one' -- if I could just get in to see him! Sept. 23 is a long time away.

I bet Dr. Gruner would have thought a 4.5 on TSH was 'normal' too.

I'm considering calling the office and asking if they would consider trying to get me to 1.0-1.5 on my TSH. But I need to do my research and get my courage up.

I need a refill on my compounded Rx (which she didn't know what it was when I showed it to her because the Rx bottle said Compounded T3/T4) and ask her to convert me to Cytomel. Maybe that's a way to get where I want to be?

there is no reason for you to be on just cytomel at this point anyway. It's normally resereved for High Reverse T3 issues.

Who scripted the meds you currently have?

My doctor that I just left because I couldn't put up with the 'low tech' of her office. She's all by herself (no other doctors) and she doesn't do any 'on call' after hours so if you get the throw ups after hours you have to pay $50 to either go to the ER or the after-hours emergency clinic to get a Rx for phenagren.

She doesn't have a lab so everything has to be sent out and it takes a long time to hear back about the results (which they won't give you over the phone -- just a card mailed to you that says "Normal" or "Abnormal -- make an appt. to discuss) which is SO frustrating. She's a 40 minute drive away (but now I'm hearing that some people drive hours to get to a good dr.) and over the years it just got to be too much to deal with.

Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have left her.

If I can get hooked up with this supposed good endo. everything will even out. I'm just in the lurch from now until then -- since I've left my old dr. I guess I can't call her up and ask for an increase in my meds.
