Xanax before getting thyroid bloodwork Okay?

have an appt with a new doc in the morning, gyno exam and thyroid tests...is it okay to take a xanax? Or would that affect the bloodwork for thyroid?

Um, which 'bloodwork' for thyroid are you getting? It should be:

Free T4
Free T3
TSH
TPO antibodies

If your doc is just doing the pituitary test (TSH) than you could prolly take anything...cuz just doing a TSH doesn't tell you ANYTHING about the measurement of your thyroid hormones.

But, no, Xanax won't bother a specific Free T4 or Free T3 test.

Good thyroid doctors KNOW you have to test T4 and T3...not the pituitary (TSH).

I am not sure!

I am taking one, I'll tell them that I have. Like you said, if they are doing the right tests it should not matter.

It's just the gyno exam and going to a new doc ...I want to be relaxed enough to tell her everything I want to w/o "panicing"- prone to panic attacks

thank you friend!

'Most' doctors (for every 100 endo's..one KNOWS thyroid, the rest know diabetes well) don't do anything but TSH and a Total T4 (T4). TWO out of every TEN US women have Hashimoto's autoimmune hypothyroidism. It does NOT present with a high TSH nine out of ten times..yet the same (boring) doctors do the same (boring and cheap, tells ya nothing) test...the TSH.

Don't be surprised if you only get a TSH (and maybe a T4). Yet T4 has to be converted into T3 in order to:lose weight, have energy, stop hair loss/fallout. The range for TSH is about .30 to 5.5, yet almost every NORMAL human has a normal TSH of around or under a 1...then doctors call anything in range 'normal'.

Just a heads up. And if they won't do those tests, you can get the TSH, FT3, FT4 at Online Lab Tests: blood work, blood testing and laboratory tests give checkout code: 12345 for discount they send you to a lab near YOU and report to you...under 90 bucks, so first, especially if your insurance won't pay for anything but a TSH, find out how much the FT's are gonna cost.

I am praying this place will be the one to help me. I go back the 31st for the results. I really hope they will be testing for these things Pam! I would so rather pay someone to do their job than try and navigate it myself. This board has been a saving grace.

What a TOTALLY different experience that was compared to the other doctors. The assistant actually sat and chatted with me, wanted to know everything I was experiencing. I have never felt so comfortable, and VALIDATED about everything going on with my body right now.

The gyno exam was so fast and easy. The nurse practitioner said as far as the blood work, that they would be performing "more" extensive tests than I had previously had, so I feel hopeful.

I went to a place called Advanced Women's Health Clinic in Tacoma WA
will post results in a couple weeks- it cant come soon enough!

I'm glad your experience was a good one! I urge all women (and men too!) to get copies of your labs (with the lab ranges on them..not just a 'Oh, it's all normal, now run along' over the phone or face to face) and keep them for your own files.

I am training my doctor's office to fax me copies every time. So far, we are two for two!

Good for you! (I've heard all kinds of things from patients about getting their copies...and not being able to!). Patients need to know that lab records/copies belong to them, but they also need to know that if you do not ASK then it can cost you later to get the records. Get them while they're fresh!

The Allina clinic I go to has something called MyChart. They e-mail me my lab results as soon as my doctor posts her response and recommendations - usually within two days. I can't respond to the e-mail, but it is still nice to have reports back so quickly and to have a permanent record for myself.

Make nice with the nurses, they will usually get people copies of their labs. If not tell the Dr you want one before you leave the office and leave your fax if you have one. Just be persistent. If ya have to be a witch spelled with a B go for it.
