Fingernails

I have deep ridges (longitude) in my fingernails - no half moons except for my thumbs. I am hoping after being optimized my thyroid meds for a period of time, that this will improve. Have any of you who are optimized on your thyroid meds found improvement with your fingernails?

Me, too..I've been optimized for about 2 months, and am anxiously waiting less ridgey nails. We shall see..It probably takes about 6 months or so to see a difference.

I should add that it's not just the ridges. My nails are so thin, they peel right off if I don't keep them really short. I am so hoping for some improvement.

Can you take biotin? I found that helped along with calcium. I know it helps me with the peeling, brittle nails.

I don't know that I have throid issues, but I suspect it. No insurance, no job, no money.. so no diagnosis

the lack of moons is considered to be a celiac trait....or at least I've read that on the celiac forums...perhaps it's also an autoimmune trait???

Thanks for the tip, Deb. I used to take biotin but got away from it.

Maile: Celiac or autoimmuine disease? Oh, dear! I'll have to look up celiac disease and see if I have any of the symptoms.

Lack of moons and ridges are hypothyroid. And YES...I have mine back...about the fourth YEAR optimized (um..when we say 'optimized' we're talking holding FT4 midway of lab range and FT3 2/3 or better for at least six months or longer usually). In my case, it took about two years for me to be 'optimized' (all my hormones balanced).

I have no moons and have ridges...my nails used to grow like crazy now they don't grow at all.

What about wrinkly, pruney fingertips? I have prune fingers all the time...like I just got out of he tub. Is that a hypo thing?

My fingernails quite peeling in about a year, but in another TWO years they actually wouldn't 'bend backwards' and then in four years they had moons, no ridges, etc. I also take biotin, as well as a multi with selenium in it, and I also take cal/mag and fish oils/flaxseed oil/borage oil.

The moons came back when I was on estradiol, progesterone, but with the addition of testosterone, not only did I grow a lot of facial hair, but once again my nails became brittle, etc. (I just couldn't tolerate DHEA nor Testosterone...nowadays I've weaned off of ALL BHRT). I also take daily oral steroids (for other autoimmune disease) and that can also help nails in some (doesn't do much for the skin though).

I had problems with peeling skin...like layers peeling on my fingertips...but not for long. And DH has the peeling skin every time he forgets his Armour/Westhroid for a couple of days. With me, my feet act up..plantar fasciitis (and that's not easy given I'm on my feet and running at my job for up to 12 hours, six days a week). I don't complain about that much though..it wasn't all that long ago that I could barely get out of a chair.....All day today I had a grin on my face...I have 1433 people coming to Thanksgiving dinner. And I'm the only one making all the bread. (Grin).

Heh heh..yeah...and we had to cut off reservations cuz we don't have enough chairs. Imagine that! (Heck I would have hidden the dang chairs....). I've been making and baking bread since last Thursday......today should be a 12 to 14 hour day...and then I'll work tomorrow just to see it all disappear.

Redeemed-

I have thin, weak nails and a couple of them have the ridges you describe. Biotin causes my hair to grow like wildfire but does nothing for my thinning hair or nails.

I try to keep a nail strengthener on my nails, but they still break and chip often. I've noticed no improvement with my thyroid meds, but I don't take any other hormones.

Well, I'm a little leary of hormones in light of my dramatic 10 pound weight loss since going off Prometrium. However, I will go back to the biotin. Nail polish dries my nails and makes them even more brittle.

Oral progesterone bloated me up a good 20 pounds! But doing transdermal compounded helped me lose ten.

I don't know how old or what your hormone status is Redeemed, but once you are clearly POST meno, oral progesterone can really bloat, I do know that. And there are FORTY different 'kinds' of oral prometrium. So, think about the fillers!

I just know that I used a compounder who compounded my transdermals in oil. It worked very well for me. (Ileen...I wasn't an athlete though...I didn't burn it right back off...heh heh...maybe it's just gonna be REALLY different for you).

when i decide to go back to transdermal, i will try to remember the oil part. I'd love for my liver to have to process less.

Amen on the liver part...maybe you should call around to the different compounding pharmacists and take a 'poll' of who does compounding in olive oil.
