Cytomel helping me lose weight.....

Hi ladies

I was on 2 grains of Armour. My doc (who is awesome) changed me to 100 mcg of Synthroid and 25 mg of Cytomel.

In the last few weeks, I have lost 10 pounds. I am not doing LC anymore, but just watching what I am eating. I have been very surprised.

So, I went to the doc yesterday for a check up and told the nurse. She said they have been hearing from a lot of patients losing weight since they changed to Cytomel from Armour.

Just wanted to share.

I wish that were true for me. I feel better on synthroid and cytomel than reformulated Armour, but I have gained some weight. I feel very hungry in the evenings. I'm glad it has worked out well for you.

likely because most of the new amour was reformulated and was turning people hypo.

Glad it's working for you.. that's the most important.

Um, look again. You're getting more T3 with that dosage of Cytomel than what was in your dosage of Armour. If your doc would have upped you to more Armour....which would have upped the T3, the same would have happened. Actually, your Armour only had about 18mcg. T3 but you're now taking 25. And if you are taking the 25 cytomel all at ONCE than about half the weight you JUST lost is water weight. Congratulations on the weight loss.

And, yes, the NEWEST Armour was reformulated, but still, taking more T3 should have resulted in better results all around.

Oh, and I just caught the switch...you WERE taking about 74mcg. T4 and only 18mg. T3 in the Armour (two grains) and he switched you up to 100mcg. T4 and 25mg T3 synthetic. You would have to be on about three grains to equal what you are getting in synthetic. You must have been pretty undermedicated with only two grains of Armour.

I, also went hyper first on two grains and then on three grains in my early treatment. Yet, fast forward to nine years later, and 3.5 grains is what I need in the winter, three in the summer. Simply put: I was making more 'other hormones' nine years ago and I'm not the same 'hormone supply' I am now.

Okay, folks, which is it? Mg of Mcg? I keep seeing all kinds of different measures. Is it 25mcg of 25mg of Cytomel that folks are using? 5 mg or 5mcg? Asking because it would be my luck to demand Cytomel and then get a funky dose...

I just pm'd you Lisa, and it's all about seeing the labs before you can ask for anything. MOST women do NOT like being kept on Cytomel ONLY, most do a T4/T3 synthetic combo (they take T4 AND Cytomel).

It's mg. in most cases and in most PDR's. When I think of one GRAIN Armour, I think in terms of 37mcg. T4 and 9mg. T3.

I'm not really trying to determine how much I need or would ask for, I'm trying to determine if everyone that is posting about Cytomel/T3 is using the same measurement or if they are using mg and mcg interchangeably and mistakenly. Do most doctors script using BOTH mg and mcg? Either or? Because when I look online, I see most sites that talk about Cytomel/T3, refer to a normal starting dose as 25 mcg.

For instance. If you say one grain of Armour contains 9 mg of T3, that converts to 9000 mcg of T3.

And I've seen some on here say that they are using 25 mcg T3 split during the day, which tells me that they are using only .025 mg of T3.

Do you know what I mean? Or am I just plum crazy and slow? My math skills were never very good!

I take 25mcg's TWICE a day for a total of 50MCG's a day! Hope that helps!

question for garden mom

I noticed in your post that you are very happy with your thyroid dr. and that you are from the southern California coast. I don't know if you've read my posts but I am looking for a good thyroid dr in San Diego. If not S.D. then I will travel. Could you please let me know the name and location of your dr. Thanks

Fran, no one on that link I sent on your other message asking about a doc, peaked your interest? There's a few that look pretty good in SD. Then there's Tustin also. I think if I was going to a new doc I'd get the labs done through healthcheckusa first, at least the Thyroid Panel II, for the $85 (w/the 12345 discount code) and take the results with me. It would less expensive I'm sure than them running them.

Praise the heavens and hallelujiah! Finally! I am NOT losing my frickin' mind! I could NOT understand the 5mg and the 25mcg doses. Sheesh. Some folks just forget to use the "C" in the MG!

Honest, ya'll, I'm not anal, but I am trying SO hard to understand all of this so I can be my own best advocate!

And GardenMom, my bestest apology for the crazy threadjack!

ahem...but the doctor would have known, cuz it's the ONLY dosage in the PDR for Cytomel (and some older PDR's say there is ONLY 25mg. dosage, so you go figure, ha ha). We've had docs argue with patient saying 'The PDR doesn't give a dose less than 25mg".

I tend to go the way it is in the PDR (cuz, after all, the doc is gonna look at that). I've had docs with PDR's that say it's ONLY available in 25 and 50, and we KNOW it's available in 5's..(which is convenient).

I am relatively new to posting on these boards and I am trying to learn. You wrote to me saying that I meant to contact Lisa( 2bflawless) but the top post was from garden mom who writes that she is from the southern california coast and is very happy with her thyroid dr.She is the one I want to reach(garden mom). What am I doing wrong?

I'm currently on 25mcg Cytomel 2X a day. My fatigue is back. It was gone on the "old" Armour.
Yuck, I have zero energy,

Donna, that's precisely what MOST emails I have from people just on Cytomel say. After a little bit, their bodies are unbalanced (taking JUST Cytomel can be as unbalancing as taking JUST T4) and they miss that T4 incoming. Not to mention that natural thyroid also contains T1, T2.

Call around and find a compounding pharmacy that has natural thyroid (it won't be Armour BRAND, but it will be the same as Armour) and see if they compound it..if they do, ask what you have to do to have your doc call/FAX a Rx. for natural thyroid in.

Pam,
The fatigue has been worse in the last couple days. I feel tired all the time. I didn't do well on the reformulated Armour so I stopped. I hope the Nature-Throid works like the "old" Armour.
I just called RLC lab and they said the Nature-Throid should be in the pharmacies by the end of November. I'm going to hold out until it comes in.

I only paid ten dollars more for a compounded natural...you might still want to check that out...cuz folks are writing saying Naturethroid isn't as 'effective/strong' as the 'old Armour'. I prefer Westhroid myself OR Thyroid (made here, than goes to Canada, then they gouge us to ship it back, sigh).

Pam is the Thyroid from Canada like the old Armour. I'm thinking it is. I don't know if I can hold out till the USA gets it together. Thanks

You want the number to Custom Rx. here in Ft. Wayne? I'll email it all to ya...they mail it out (almost all pharms can mail it out...across the country...so you certainly don't have to get it just where you are).
