?? for nonstickpam and others... :)
Hi there... I was reading over some of your old posts and I thought maybe you could help me. I'm 44 and just now decided to get on thyroid meds due to normal but low end tsh, t3 and t4.. I also tested high in estrogen with low progesterone by saliva testing. My symptoms were what made me decided to get treatment - puffyness, swelling before my period and constipation. Can you tell me what you take - you did have low ranges for tsh as well as t3 and t4 correct?? How low were your numbers?? My doctor put me on 50mg of synthroid - Armour is not available here - I'm wondering if I should add some t3 to this as well - any help would be greatly appreciated.
(I'm not over weight, but if I don't watch what I eat to a tee, I get puffy and bloated).. thanks for your help... also, do you feel adkins is a healthy way to lose weight, do you do a modified adkins or do you believe in sticking to the original diet?? Thanks... |

I'm not a doctor. I can only comment on your labs. You should be looking at Free T4 and Free T3. Only a doctor can 'decide' for you what you should take in the case of replacement hormones. I'm allergic to Synthroid...and it's only T4...I needed T3 as well. I had Hashi toxicosis (both hyper and hypo, swinging back and forth with both TSI and TPO in high range) and my doctor used a block and replace technique on me (certainly not as simple as just seeing my TSH and giving me T4).
You'll want to be looking at your FREE T4 and FREE T3 testing to determine 'where you are' in function. My doctor keeps me well medicated and my FT4 is about midway of it's range (or slightly under) and my FT3 is kept approximately 3/4 or a little above in it's range. I take natural dessicated thyroid (whatever is available, whether it be Armour, or Westhroid, or Naturethroid....or compounded natural dessicated thyroid....if none other is available). I am Celiac, therefore I eat NO grains/gluten, I'm also HIE (hyper IgE...that means the most allergic a person CAN be) so you're not going to want to eat like I do, I'm pretty limited. I do lift weights (three times a week), I also have lung disability so cardio really isn't my thing I lost most of my overweight with Protein Power (book by Dr. Michael and Mary Dan Eades) and stil eat about 60grams carbs (veggies/fruits) on a non work out day and upwards of almost 80grams carbs on a weightlifting day (I CAN eat steel cut oats, 1/2 cup after workout couple times a week..if they aren't milled with any type of gluten). If you'd like me to see your labs, make sure it's Free T4, Free T3, TSH, TPO with lab ranges used by THAT lab They're all different. ETA: Saliva testing didn't work well at ALL for me with BHRt. And by the looks of most of my 2400plus emails from women your age, it didn't for THEM either. Blood levels of estradiol, progesterone and testosterone (should be Free testosterone too) are much more accurate for ME...I was totally overreplaced using salivary labs. But salivary 4x in one day cortisol (adrenals) labs were ok. Pam

How did you know you were allergic to synthroid?? I live in Hawaii and I was told that we cannot get any type of natural thyroid meds right now.
I've been having my thyroid tested over the past 5 yrs and this is the first time I decided to get treatment. The first time my t3 was off the charts low. I did research and fixed it myself with iron, selenium and other vitamins.. Just by doing that it raised all my levels. This last time I had my tsh, t3 and t4 tested - while they were all in range they were all at the bottom.. the very bottom.. I'm wondering if I need to add some t3.. What do you think? I'm feeling good, but I still get the puffyness if I don't eat perfect. I'm also using a progesterone cream from a a compound pharmacist.. I'll try to find my labs and post.. What were your labs in the beginning?? |

I can't say anything until I see YOUR Free T4, Free T3 and lab ranges. I'm not you, you're not me, and it's all individual. I know I was allergic to Synthroid because I was hospitalized with anaphylaxis an hour after taking it. My doc goes by Free's, not totals (and you have totals). My labs in the beginning were a TSH of 0.0023 (not distinguishable) a FT4 of JUST inside the beginning range (the total T4 was higher though) and a FT3 of under the range..my body wasn't making ANY hormones at all at that time. Why don't you ask the compounding pharm if they have powdered dessicated thyroid to compound with? And you can get Armour (natural dessicated Thyroid) through Canada...perhaps your doctor can assist you with that.

you find a pharmacy you want to deal with online.. Stop thyroid madness blog has a listing of pharmacies and there are many more on line if you google canada and 'thyroid'.. Price check, some are getting gready.
SOme pharms have their own fax policy.. mine had a specail sheet to attach your fax script to along with a copy of your drivers license to, THEN fax. Most have tollfree numbers too. You ask the dr to write the srcipt for THyoid, in the normal dose that your amour would be in. send payment and wait. ![]() |
