If You're Optimized on Thyroid Meds.....
Do you eat cabbage, broccoli, cauliflour? I would like to follow Pam's suggestion of eating not less than 30 carbs a day and staying around 1700 calories. Those are my three favorite vegetables. I would have a hard time coming up with vegetable carbs if I have to give up these. Would being optimized on thyroid meds block the goitergen effects of these vegetables? I don't use soy but will make sure it's not in any of my low carb bread products.

You can eat those without being optimized if they are cooked. The goitrogen effect is gone once they are cooked.

It's nice that Pam was able to lose on 1700 calories, and I hope that works for you, too, but I think this is a YMMV situation. At my heaviest (320+), I could only lose at about 1200-1400, since I'm both post-menopausal and hypothyroid AND have always had a slow metabolism. After getting down to 240, I found that I've had to restrict to about 1000 in order to lose at about one pound a week. My endo confirms that this is true for me. When I was at my heaviest, I nutritionist insisted that I needed to eat 1800 cal daily to lose (no lower), and I gained rapidly until I stopped paying attention to her and listened to my own body. |

Leo. Yes, I agree. It's individual. We need to listen to our own bodies. I have read your progress this year. It has taken determination and commitment, I'm sure. Congratulations. You have done so well. But Pam's recommendation is a reasonable starting point for most individuals I think. Very tweakable! I have tried several diets this year. They all work fine at first it seems. JUDDD did work, but I couldn't stick with it. Maybe now I could because I only work one night a week. That morning after a night shift always did me in - crazy tired and famished. Not a good combination. Going too low with carbs quit working for me also after a while. What's YMMV?

I agree that starting with Pam's recommendation of 1700 calories is a good thing. I only posted because I didn't want you to be upset if you didn't lose at that level. I hope you do because I wouldn't want anyone to have to restrict the way I do. The issue about the carbs is interesting. Way back when I was young and did Atkins (and wasn't hypo), I thrived on almost zero carbs. Now when I tried that, I actuall felt ill. I do best with about 30g carbs a day. I eat those goitrogens all the time--but always cooked. |

I was post menopausal, and Hashimotos too when I started at 313. I ate mine raw and cooked depending on how I was having it. My doc said it was a lifestyle issue and they would titrate my meds to match my lifestyle but I had to be consistant with what I was consuming.
Since I got diagnoised when I was starting my Atkins when I added back the OWL rungs and my weight loss stopped I needed more meds and Blood work confirned that. I needed my dose upped 3 times that first yr and until recently had been doing fine on the same dose for over 3 yrs. I ate cals at almost 4000 in the beginning with the atkins 20 gram limit. as I added back carbs my calls dropped to about 2500. I did that mandatory exercise part of the atkins plan and discovered my critical carbs for losing was 115 net when I did 2 hours in the gym 6 days a week and 45 when I did just treadmilling 60 min 3 dats a week.
