What is the best way to eat when you have Hashimot's?

What do you want to avoid? What are great things to eat?
Is avoiding carbs the way to go?

Avoid soy for sure and not going to low carb (not lower than 40grams per Ileen) from all I have read. Maybe Ileen and Pam can weigh in the both have Hashi's.

Good luck.

That's about it....some lose with Weight Watcher's, some low with low carb (not under 30 grams of carb and make sure to stay about 1700 calories). I lost my first 50 lbs. with NO replacement hormone on Protein Power (a book by Michael and Mary Dan Eades).

I ate more carbs than most here and did fine. Diet, exercise and moderate carbs worked for me.,.In addition to optimizing my thyroid/meds.

The level of carbs might depend on just HOW overweight a person is though. I'm one of those who was 100 lbs. overweight (and more). I see a lot of folks with hypothyroidism (and being treated, I must add) who are over 60 lbs. overweight when they start is that it seems to work pretty well for budging the first 40 lbs....then we have to pick an exercise plan and work from there with raising the carbs (Atkins' ladder comes to mind).

Those that are less than 100 lbs. overweight (say, like 20 lbs. or so) seem to do best on higher cals/lower fat sometimes. It's totally individual though. One thing's for sure: you gotta stay on your plan...don't deviate and cheat and expect to recover and still lose no matter what plan that is.

I'm probably not "over weight" by the weight/height charts but I have gained about 15-20 lbs since battling this problem. Since being diagnosed my levels are getting closer with levo and cytomel. It's been a work in progress.

I just can't seem to get my weight to budge. I just wondered if there were any helpful things I can do/not do to help.

I can tell you that LC is the only I way I lose without bordering on an eating disorder. In other words if I eat less than 500 cals a day sure I lose but how long can anyone sustain that and not die!

Atkins is the low carb WOE I follow but there are many. I suggest you get his book 2002 Atkins New Diet Revolution and read it, if it feels like something you can follow then I highly recommend it. I climbed the ladder pretty easily - some folks stay VLC- but I chose not too and I lost very well! After being on many different types of diets most of my life Atkins has been the most comfortable and easiest. Easiest because the foods are delicious and satieting. Unlike the rabbit food or "shakes" I lived on in the past and as I said before I seriously at very little just to maintain. Now I never count calories and only eat when hungry and the pounds melt off.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

What worked for me a few years ago was walking and changing how/when I ate. Started with 30 min/day walking and worked up (can be split up into different times); cut out the white stuff and went to whole grains (if tolerated), more veggies, more water and the very most important thing, when I ate a carb, had a protein with it (learned that from diabetes classes I went to with DH when he was diagnosed about 3 years ago - which also taught me portion sizes - a lot smaller than we think): I ate every 3-4 hours without fail. breakfast, snack (healthy), lunch, snack, dinner, snack. What amazed me was that my appetite went down because I was eating more often, which keeps your metabolism moving (I never believed that one before but I do now). In about 3 months I dropped about 20 lbs and it surprised the heck out of me.
