Armour with out prescription
I have been on armour before and did well. I didn't know it was for thyroid (I was a teenager at the time.) My problem is I don't have insurance and can't pay a lot of money to keep going to doctor to doctor playing little games with doctors who will not do the right tests and know how to read them right. My Mom knows how to take Armour and I think with her help I can take it and do fine (she is the one that regulated it to me in the past.) So does anyone know of a website that sells them with out a prescription? I buy my effexor overseas but that website does not carry Armour. At this moment I am going crazy with depression, being so so so tired all the time, and only losing a pound or two every two weeks while keeping under 15-18 carbs. I can't live like this anymore! Please help!

Im sorry you are without help but we dont advocate self medication. Perhaps you can try and save up, there are some good drs in your area.
Maybe join the Texas thyroid site and they can offer you some ideas.. I will say they also do not advocate self medication either. Texas_Thyroid_Groups : Support for Texans with Thyroid Disease  Last edited by inatic; 07-14-2009 at 04:18 AM.. |

If you've had all the appropriate tests, TSH, T3, T4, free T4, etc. and they are all within normal ranges, your thyroid might not be the problem. You could go to 30 doctors, anyone with any ethics isn't going to give you a prescription for a condition you don't have. It can be dangerous to take thyroid medication if you dont' need it, and without a doctor's supervision. You could give yourself a heart attack. I'm not saying you don't have a thyroid problem, but you didn't list any tests you'd had done or mentioned how many doctors you had seen. There are diets you can follow that may boost your thyroid function naturally, and certain foods that slow down your thyroid functioning (like raw cabbage or broccilli, soy, etc) But the rate of weight loss you mentioned isn't abnormal by any means, I'm lucky to lose about a pound a month!

At the very least you need to get the proper testing done before you can even determine if you actually have a thyroid problem. You can order tests online for relatively inexpensive. I'm sorry that youre without insurance... i pay out of pocket as well and its a byatch.

Do you guys know of places that do cheap testing? Also if I had a thyroid problem before, wouldn't I still have it?

Unfortunately there's no way to know what the status of your thyroid WAS. There's no way to know if it was properly diagnosed or treated previously. I suppose that if you had hypOthyroidism THEN you still have it NOW however the fact remains that treatment needs to be closely monitored. Online Lab Tests: blood work, blood testing and laboratory tests Get the test results including ranges and post them here... then we can see whats going on. If you ARE HypO you're going to need to find a doc that can treat you properly. Last edited by Ilpirata; 07-15-2009 at 03:18 PM.. |

As I've recommended to you before, Dr.Robert Thoreson is a great D.O. in Austin Texas and was my doctor before I had to leave Austin. I'm sure if you explain your situation to the staff or him, you will get a fair cash discount. He did allow me a trial of Armour even though the tests all showed normal, but I had a basal body temperature of 95F. I would suggest you do this:
The Barnes Basal Body Temperature Test: Take your basal underarm temperature. The Basal Temperature is your temperature when you first wake up in the morning. Most basal thermometers come with a temperature-plotting chart. A basal thermometer (obtained at the drugstore) shows the tiny incremental degree changes that a regular thermometer does not. How to do the Barnes Basal Body Temperature Test: You will want to take your temperature for four consecutive days, although some practitioners will tell you to take it for 14 consecutive days putting the thermometer under the left armpit for 7 days and the right armpit for the remaining 7 days. If you are taking your Basal Metabolic Temperature for detecting ovulation and fertility, you will want to take it every day and chart the findings as the temperature will dip one whole degree approximately 24 hours prior to ovulation. Take temperature at the same time every day before getting out of bed--even to urinate. For women still having their period, you will want to do the test starting the second day of menses because the hormone progesterone, released during certain other times of your cycle, will increase your body temperature. For men and post menopausal women take it for 4 consecutive days. Before going to bed, shake the thermometer down to 96 degrees or less so you won't increase your basal temperature by doing that in the morning. Before you even get out of bed to brush your teeth or start your day, place the basal thermometer into your mouth or under your arm for ten minutes. Record the temperature. The normal basal temperature will be 97.8 to 98.2 degrees F Repeat this test for four consecutive days or for however long your practitioner advises. If your temperature averages at less than 96 degrees, this indicates low thyroid. Do not test when you have an infection or any other condition that would raise your body temperature. |

I am currently doing a trial of Iodoral (no prescription required) and am quite hopeful. My thyroid tests have all tested "normal" (even my frees) but my basal body temperature has been 95F. I tried adding Armour which only provided minor relief (after slow increases over years, even at 13 grains I never went hyper or had temp raised) but ran out and am looking for root causes and believe I have a problem in the cellular transport system (possibly bromine is suggested.) Suggestions are the bromine will displace Iodine, & without Iodine the thyroid is useless.
