RE: Other's Recipes

What is the etiquette when using other's recipes as far as "credit" goes?

When does a recipe become your own?

What about recipes from a cookbook? Can you post the recipe as long as you cite the source? (For example, I just made a taco pizza using a crust recipe from Elana Amsterdam's book. Can I post the recipe I used and give her credit?)

I have no problem when people do that with recipes from my cookbook, but I'm not exactly sure what the rule is.

Why was this moved? I was asking the forum members who post on the Recipe forum.

Because you're asking a technical question about copyright infringement in the last part of your post.

As for my personal opinion as someone who has contributed a lot of recipes to this site, I think it's pretty stinky when someone makes a very minor change to a recipe you took the time to create then calls it their own with no "recipe based on xxx" given.
Worse when they make their own recipe book to sell and make a profit off someone else work.

Thanks for the answers on all accounts! How would I find out the answer to the copyright infringement?

lol that can be a tough one, but as always when in doubt, contact the site and ask before posting is the best option

This is an interesting topic! I posted one or two recipes on my blog that may have been from here. I copied the recipe and gave a link, too. If I did anything to it, I just said different ways I've tried it. But original recipe, first. Makes me wonder if I've still done something wrong...

I have google alerts and a daily reminder that some of my recipes are lifted often and are used as filler for other peoples' sites without any attribution whatsoever--and they're not changed. Just yesterday, two more. People tell them, "Oh, you are so clever!" Yeah. Scraping work is clever...

I love to pay it forward and to help others, but it's intellectual property and should be treated with some respect for the people who put hours of effort with little to no recompense. It's not like I'm here selling a cookbook or anything. A lot of folks want to help people, just to find established bloggers taking others' work and--as Dottie says-- selling it!

Agreed. And kindle and other e-readers are the worst! Whenever you see a cheap download, you can be pretty sure it's recipes that are lifted from sites, like this one and Jamies, and then people sell them for a buck. Not cool.
