How to post pics?

I want to post a couple of pics in my profile, but not the type where it shows up every time I post. I saw where someone else had a gallery link over to the left and you had to click on it to view his photos. How would I go about doing that? I didn't see anything under my profile settings for that.

Not sure if this is where to post this question, but didn't see another section that would have covered this.

Under your name to the right your name will be in blue. Click on that. It's a link to your gallery. On the right of that page will be a link to upload pics. Just go from there.

Once I've put a picture in my gallery - how do I make that picture into my avitar?
