Stillman's May QWL Thread
THE QUICK WEIGHT LOSS METHOD
This is a severe form of ketogenic diet.It is not easily sustainable for the long term. It may be useful in breaking plateaus and in those too impatient to allow their bodies to take the fat off gradually at its own pace. NOTHING ELSE IS PERMITTED ON THIS DIET--NOTHING! IF IT'S NOT MENTIONED IN THE FOLLOWING LIST, DON'T EAT OR DRINK IT. Eat all you wish of the following foods to satisfy hunger. If you eat until you've satisfied your hunger but haven't stuffed yourself, and then feel hungry before the next meal, you can eat again, but only from the foods listed here. In fact, you're better off eating smaller meals 6 times a day than 3 bigger meals as is the general custom. But you limit yourself to this extensive list of high protein foods. 1. LEAN MEATS, with all possible fat trimmed off. Includes beef, lamb, veal. Eat it broiled, boiled, OR baked. No butter, margarine, oil or other fats are to be used either in the cooking or the eating. 2. CHICKEN AND TURKEY with all skin removed. Broiled, boiled or roasted, with no butter, margarine, oil or other fats. 3. ALL LEAN FISH & SEAFOOD No butter, margarine, oil or other fats permitted in preparation or serving. You may have cocktail sauce, horseradish, ketchup-in moderation. 4. EGGS. Hard boiled preferably. Also soft or medium boiled eggs, poached, or any type of fried eggs made in non-fat, non-stick pans without butter, margarine, oil or other fats. 5. COTTAGE CHEESE, FARMER CHEESE, POT CHEESE made with skim milk and no whole milk. 6. AT LEAST 8 GLASSES OF WATER PER DAY, absolutely essential (10 ounce glasses). As much as you want of coffee and tea without cream, milk or sugar. You may sweeten with non-caloric sweeteners to taste. Enjoy all the club soda, vichy and non-caloric carbonated beverages you wish, as often as desired. You may use common seasonings such as salt, pepper, spices, other herbs, cocktail sauce, horseradish, ketchup. Don't use any creamy or oily sauces or dressings. No mayonnaise, no salad dressings, no oils, no fats. NOTHING ELSE IS PERMITTED-IF IT’S NOT LISTED HERE, DON’T EAT IT OR DRINK IT! The eight <10 ounce> glasses of water daily are in addition to whatever coffee, tea and non-caloric carbonated beverages you drink. This is an integral part of the specific internal process put into motion by the Quick Weight Loss Diet. Much more of your body fat is burned up than with most other diets. This leaves in it’s wake the waste products or ashes of burnt fat. [ketone bodies] They must all be washed out of your system by water which also serves to relieve any unpleasant dryness and taste in the mouth. Note: ketone bodies are not ashes, they are the by-product of incomplete burning of fats.Ketones are to fat as charcoal is to wood. Ketones can be burned for fuel by your body. Most people have feedback loops to protect against ketosis-acidosis. It is desirable to take vitamins daily with the diet, such as a once-daily vitamin and mineral tablet. NOTHING ELSE IS PERMITTED ON THIS DIET--NOTHING! IF IT'S NOT MENTIONED IN THE PRECEDING LIST, DON'T EAT OR DRINK IT. If you disregard the instructions and eat regular carbohydrates or sugar or alcohol, you will stop burning up stored fat as efficiently. Even one indiscretion, one mouthful of ice cream, for example, will set you back a day or two. You will lose the most weight on The Quick Loss Diet, most quickly, if you eat only to satisfy your hunger pangs rather than to gratify a desire to eat just for the pleasure of eating. This diet has practically no residue (fiber). Therefore it is likely that you may not have a bowel movement for a few days, although not necessarily so. In any case don't be alarmed by any such lack. [note: extra vitamin C or milk of magnesia is helpful in some cases] |

Well, my husband lost 3 lbs. the next morning after doing the hard boiled eggs for a day. He got down to 190.6. Today he is in a new number. 189.8!!! Yea for him. He is so happy!
Me, I only lost 1 lb. after the egg day. Yesterday, we went back to the normal QWL and when I weighed this morning I lost no weight at all! Boo! Must we're keeping on. I know I will drop some major poundage one morning that will make up for the not so great mornings. I'm just happy my husband got past that stall! |

Hey, guys! My name is Lynn! I'm new to the group!
![]() It's nice to be here. Everyone's so welcoming. I'm currently on my 9th day of Stillman's. Stillman's seems like a right diet for me, because not only it gives QUICK results (and I need results to stay on track), but it's also low fat, which I really like. I've done Atkins induction a couple of times and i must say that all that fat was making me sick! ![]() But I've got a problem... You see, everyone around here keeps saying how they don't feel hungry at all and how they lose their appetite around the 5th day on this diet. And it makes so jealous because I'm on the 9th day already and I'm still hungry, like, all the time! Yes, of course I eat below my BMR, because it's really hard to eat too much since the list of allowed foods is so limited, besides I've heard that eating too much protein (e.g. too many calories) on Stilman's can kick you out of ketosis, because excess protein can be turned into glucose. So I eat about 800-1000 daily. I also don't eat cottage cheese, even though we've got an awesome brand here that has only 1 g of carbs per serving. I don't think I've got any symptoms of ketosis: no bad breath, no metallic taste in the mouth, no urine odor - nothing like that... So probably the explanation is simple - I'm just not in ketosis. But why? Is it possible that I'm so metabolically resistant that I can't get myself in ketosis even by eating almost zero carbs? ![]() But the weird thing is that I'm losing. I've lost about 6 pounds of water on the first day, than I've stalled for a couple of days and than I started losing about 0.8 lb a day, which is great and I'm so excited, but I'm not sure if I can stay on this day much longer if I stay so hungry all the time. Actually it seems like I'm getting even hungrier every day. And in addition to simple hunger, I get these CRAZY craving for carby foods, and I'm pretty sure it's not just emotional - I feel that my body wants all those carbs. I have asked ketosis-related question on the general board, but everyone just keeps giving me advices to eat more fat, which is a little annoying, because I chose this diet and i want to stick to it. I'm sorry for the long post. and I can't believe you're still reading, but I'm feeling pretty desperate right now, because I don't wanna quit Stillman's but I don't know how much longer I can last... ![]() I was hoping anyone might have some ideas or maybe someone has expirinced something like that? Thanks, Lynn Last edited by longstocking; 05-02-2009 at 05:50 AM.. |

Lynn,
I went back to adding veggies/fat (butter and mayo).. But, I will do Stillman's again for a couple days at a time. I was just feeling so hungry.. I would rather add in some veggies and butter instead of caving and having ice cream. I also was having a hard time "going".. and wanted some help in that area. i think I am going to do it again this week. |

Hi Longstocking
Congrats on losing so well. I think you can afford to stop worrying about the signs of ketosis though and just eat more food. Remember, Dr Stillman said that there is no need to count calories on this diet, just eat until you are satisfied but not stuffed. You don't need to go hungry to lose weight. |

I have to finish my paper but i just wanted to say that you can have veggies on Stillman's! Look at the 14-day shape up program (it's a sticky here) or any other plan for Stillman's. Do you have the book? There are so many plans! gl

You're certainly right, Sassy. The 14 day program does allow vegetables. However, like longstocking, I prefer the "original" Stillman partly for its rigidity. For example, cherry tomatoes have 1 gm of CHO and are very low calorie. However, for a carbaholic like myself, once I eat one tomato, I end up eating 20:blush:. I'm simply better able to limit my carbs when I can't elect to eat them. At some point, they'll clearly have to be re-introduced to my diet.........but not while I'm trying to lose.
Good Luck, |

Had to pop in and say Hi, I am crazy busy with school, work, kids, etc...fell of the wagon and very graciously it has rolled around to pick me back up. So I am doing much better today and just as always I have recommitted to stick with this until at least the end of June. I am hoping to get off 15 before my big trip. I am tired of these up and downs. Just want to get down and stay down
I am hungry most of the time on Stillman's, it is just making the right choices when you do get starving. I don't know if the hunger ever goes away or if it is, "if I have to eat another steak I might kill someone" |

Yesterday I stuck to plan, yeah for me B: too much caffeine L: 3 beef hotdogs, a SF Jell-O and a low-fat mozz cheese stick D: Hamburger soup Had a bad day emotionally so I didn't eat very much, so unlike me. I usually grab anything and everything. I did exercise so that helped a little bit. Hope everyone has great day. You can do this! |

My husband has been seesawing up and down 1 lb, one day, 2 10ths of a pound. He is getting really discouraged and really tired of the extreme limitations of this diet. I keep working on him. But I find I too am not dropping as much as I had hoped. This is the middle of our third week. So far we have lost 16 lbs for my husband, and 12 lbs. for me. We're hanging in there.
I sent off for and received the Stillman QWL Cookbook. It is quite interesting. I've tried a few recipes already. Here's hoping tomorrow is a great day for us both. |

sensible, you guys are doing awesome. 16 in 18 days is incredible. I admit that even with that large amount of loss, it can be frustrating with the limited food choices. Maybe he should stay off the scale every single day. It seems like it is discouraging him too much. Maybe he should try once a week...How is the cookbook? Any good recipes you would consider sharing? I am always looking for a way to switch it up. I was good yesterday... B: coffee L: 3 hot dogs, cottage cheese, light swiss cheese wedge, SF Jell-O D: Protein shake Exercise |

Hi everyone
I'm new to the forum and I wasn't sure where to start.
I'm not new to Stillman's (I actually have a book, didn't realize that was rare until I read these forums) I had some great success with it in college and high school including once when I lost 30 lbs in two weeks - accidentally. I was really active then. Anyhow now I'm NOT as active. HEH. I started Monday, down 6 lbs so far. Looking forward to talking (and LOSING) with you all! |

Hey all, I'm starting up tomorrow, I'm going to get my grill fired up now to get started on my chicken stash for the week. Everyone is having really good results, hopefully I get started with a bang. I'm starting a new job tomorrow which is (in my opinion) the best time to kick off a diet, so I think that will help then also there is a gym in the facility for employees so I'm hoping for a 30 minute sweat fest on my lunch hour. I think the diet and exercise (i'm currently not exercising at all) will help me see some big numbers fast. Does anyone have any experience with stillmans combined with a moderate amount of exercise? Will I have a bigger sense of hunger? I did stillmans in the fall and had about 17 pounds in 3 weeks so I'd obviously want to lose a minimum of that but I'm shooting for 20 in 3 weeks, its a big goal but I'd love to hit it.

to all the new posters! It is so great to have you here. It makes it so much easier with all the support!gotricia ~ I would love to take the 20 in 3 challenge with you, the most I have lost is about 15 pounds in 16 days (around there, its been a while) I caved in after that. EloraRose~ Congrats on your loss! I exercise regularly and I do find my appetite increases, however, if you don't over do the workouts then you should be safe. I walked a lot the first time I did Stillman's which didn't seem to increase my appetitie. Now I tend to do everything in grand style, so I have to have a plan in place when the hungries attack, which is quite often. Have a great day everyone!! |

Hope everyone had a great mother's day. We did. My husband took me out for breakfast and I cheated. I had a Spanish Omelet (onions, peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms) and half a serving of hash browns. I also ate a Hershey bar (Hershey was my favorite chocolate) and my daughter took me to Dairy Queen for a small hot fudge sundae. Yum! I did notice that the Hershey bar tasted different. It felt like it left a film in my mouth. My sister said that was the fat in it! Yuck! Although the Hot Fudge Sundae was delish! I got on the scale this morning and I lost a pound! Yea! My husband gained 4 oz. Went back on strict QWL today. Today begins our 4th week. My husband has lost 19 lbs. - down to 185 from 204. I have lost 16 lbs. down to 252 from 268. I found I was not missing the foods I thought I was missing so badly.
I am going to scan the Cookbook recipe and put them on the site for all to use. There are menus and also recipes for the IO Diet. Let me know if anyone wants those, I'll be glad to put them up. Sounds like everyone is doing great! Last edited by Sensible; 05-11-2009 at 06:18 PM.. |

I am starting today as well! My co-worker across the aisle took a new job so we went out to eat yesterday. I will miss the company but not the lunch friend. Easier to keep with what I brought and on plan, since I won't hear "where are we going to eat today???" Good thing I exercise or I would have gained a bunch of weight this past year.
I am a procrastinator as well, so hopefully this will help me out too! I didn't get a chance to see what the scale said today, but I think I am up a couple. |
