protein -ketogenic?

Hello, my name is Lynn.
I'm new to this forum and to low-card WOE.
I'm currently on atkins induction but I really wanna try stillmans, because all that fat on atkins makes me feel sick .

But I'm a little confused. Dr Atkins stated that FAT is what gets you into ketosis and that the more fat you eat, the easier and faster you get yourself into ketosis. I've also read that protein can be easily turned into glucose. Does it mean that when you're doing stillman's you're not supposed to be in ketosis?

How does stillman's work exactly? I've read many articles about atkins and ketosis, but stillman's doesn't seem to be so popular for some reason and I haven't seen that many sites or articles that explain how it works.

Thanks

For me Stillman's works very well because I just don't feel hungry while eating lean. I eat 1500-1800 calories a day breaks down something like: 60g of fat, 30g of carbs (mostly fiber) and 180-220g protein. It feels like there are some mild 'carb cravings' after eating a can of tuna so there's probably something to the body converting amino acids to glycogen. It is nothing like eating a chunk of bread though.

The high protein intake seems to mitigate some of the muscle loss that you would otherwise experience on what (for me) is a 800-1200 calorie a day deficit.

Lynn,

My understanding of this is that both fat and protein are ketogenic BUT if you overeat on protein it can and will be converted to glucose whereas fat is not.

If I do Stillman's with my cals over 1800 then I will be kicked out of ketosis, my appetite comes back and I don't lose weight but stillmans at 1000-1200 cals a day works pretty well for me.

Hope this helps!

Wow! I had no idea that overeating on protein can kick me out of ketosis. I'll watch my calorie intake more carefully then.

Thanks a lot!

I find the diets to be quite similiar except for the decreased fat and carbohyrdate content with Stillman. Personally, I too prefer minimal fat; I tend to eat turkey on the diet instead of beef. I've lost 7 lbs over my first week and note that my hunger has decreased markedly. No physical side effects to date.

Good Luck,

Abby.........

You obtain ketosis, simply by sustaining from carbs. A person can go into ketosis by consuming less than 30g per day (most poeple, some can actually obtain it by under 100g). Atkins suggests under 20 for induction. It is writen that he suggests that amount because some poeple are restistant to ketosis, and some poeple, cheat, and moreso, there are some hidden carbs at times.

Atkins and stilmans are very similar, but stillmans also beleive in low fat, low cal. It is really a tripple whammy.

Unlike the Atkins Diet, the Stillman Diet prohibits the use of all sauces, fats and oils. However, similar to the Atkins Diet, the Stillman Diet recommends a consumption, in unlimited quantities of lean meat, fish, poultry, low fat cheese and eggs. However it is not meant to go over 1200 calories daily.

On stillmans means you will more than liekly be consuming under 10 carbs a day, almost all of which being proteins. This can be hard on your digestive tract and system, so he says you MUST drink at LEAST 80 oz a day of water.

During this diet your body becomes starved, it will start to turn on itself, so you must transfer to atkins, or a better quality diet in a short amount of time. Ypou must be taking a suppliment, if not a deficiency is sure to follow as a consequence. And furthermore you may be badly constipated, which could make you feel sick, nausaus, faint, cramps, etc.

Atkins wants you to have fat intake, understanding that these very side effects can be rather unpleasant and not good for you. Fat is not needed to obtain ketosis, but it does help the body function properly.

Hope that helps
Here is a site with the info abou twhat you can and cannot eat.

you will not starve on 1200 cals, it has to be below 1000 before that happens.
He would be in great trouble if he encourages us to go below 1100 cals a day, I worked for a diet clinic. They sometimes tell you to do so but they are risking their business.
