My post-Stillman cheating causes staggering weight gain!!! :(

I just want to share my horrible experience with the rest of you, as an example of what NOT to do, and to learn from my stupid mistakes. Although the majority here has better common sense than to make this kind of bad judgement! Also, I dont think that most people here binge eat. Well, I did and boy did I pay the price!

I started Stillman's on Monday January 9th at 160. I lost 9 pounds by the third day and was down to 151. The next four days the scale didnt budge.
I anxiously searched for my next "diet plan" to follow, and decided to try Scarsdale after hearing good things. I ended up following this plan for exactly 1 (ONE) day.

I didnt see any weight loss, and thought I would "give myself a break" from obsessing and relax with some WINE. (Mistake #1)
Then I decided to make a Sangria by mixing the wine with diet soda, so it went down r-e-a-l easy! (Mistake #2)
After a bottle and a half I was drunk and needed something to eat, so I ordered a large pizza and ate it! (Mistake #3)
The next day I was sick to my stomach.
I decided since I had already "blown it" I would remedy my illness by eating a cake and a box of cereal! (Mistake #4 + 5)

Thursday morning I got on the scale (Mistake #6) to my horror I weighed in at 162! I gained back 11 pounds in 2 days and was heavier than when I started!

I immediately went on Atkins induction and ran a mile and a half.
Friday I was down to 157. Yesterday I continued induction and ran 6 miles, today I am 156.
My energy is great and Im not hungry at all.
I still havent fully recovered from my catastrophe, but I am confident that I will be able to reach my goal with exercise, and sticking to a strict induction.

Mind you, I am not knocking Stillman or Scarsdale, or blaming those plans for my downfall. I have only myself to blame for being so stupid and such a big pig! Clearly, you MUST gradually add carbs or you WILL regain by the hour!!!

Shame on me, I got just what I deserve!!!!

Bad girl! A slap on the hands. I bet you won't become impatient again. Don't worry, you did the right thing by getting back on track.

I have learned my lesson...and one of them is to be patient!

I thought posting this thread would rid me of some of this guilt, but now I just feel plain embarrassed and very much the fool!

Don't feel foolish, we all have our "dieting" skeletons. It sounds as though your now willing to accept what happened and go forward. For me, I got the carb thing under control but I can eat a whole rack of baby back ribs and 1/2 a steak at one sitting. Everytime I do something like that (i.e. gorge on protein) b/c I feel entitled to since I am LCing and all, I get mad at myself and say, ok enjoy what you just did, but it can not happen again. However, for me it does. The results - I am stalled, been that way for almost 2 months. I really wish the "learn the lesson" fairy would visit here and get me back on the straight and narrow. In short, good for you. As for me, I need to stop just admitting what I do, and fix it!

It great that you where able to get yourself back on plan without another 3 or 4 days went by. I am very careful to try not restricting myself for any length of time because the end result ususally winds up to be a big binge

What a great post! It took some courage to share that with us, but it's great that you did....there are no doubt a lot of other people who have had (or may plan to have) similar experiences, and they need to know what the realistic outcome will be. Especially those looking for a quick fix.

You're right, patience IS key to this weight loss journey.

You've learned from it, as Lisa said, and you're wiser for it. You're back on track and determined....that's what matters.

Thanks again for sharing.

Hi Feather, I am also a binge-eater. I found that once i stopped doing any kind of plan that felt "extreme" to me - I'm talking even Atkins induction, I was able to stop the cycle of binge-eating. Knowing that after a binge, the next day would not be some sort of punishing day or week of fasting, but just a normal day on my woe, somehow helped me psychologically not to have those urges to lighten up and jump ship.

Amazingly, I am now eating very high calories and carbs and am still losing weight -- something I NEVER would have let myself do in the past (I lost most of my weight on Atkins OWL on 20 carbs, 1200 calories a day). I think the restrictive dieting really messed with my already messed head, lol!!! It was one major trigger - I have identified some other ones too.

Some books I have found very helpful follow. Most of them do talk about this cycle of strictness followed by binge-eating, followed by strictness, etc. You can buy the books at half.com for very cheap used copies, or check your local library. That's what I do:

Why Weight? A Guide To Compulsive Eating by Geneen Roth

Feeding the Hungry Heart: The Experience of Compulsive Eating by Geneen Roth

The Solution: For Safe, Healthy, and Permanent Weight Loss by Laurel Mellin

p.s. I have not eradicated binge eating completely. I now understand that it is a learned behaviour I will live with to some degree for the rest of my life, but I have cut it down in a big big way to manageable levels - enough that I am still losing weight.

hth!!!!

One thing to keep in mind with quick losses and even quicker gains is the actual weight of food in your system. I couldn't figure out why I would gain weight the day after I would eat a heavy meal (heavy as in weight -- not carbs or even cals). It kept me scratching my head until it dawned on me that the food in my system also had weight. So you ate a large pizza, a cake, and a box of cereal (presumably with a half gallon or so of milk). Put all that food on a scale and you've got a lot of weight right there.

So don't beat yourself up too badly. Lesson learned for sure (I know I've been there!). And thanks for the reminder. I've been pretty bad lately and need to get serious to get these last ten off!

Feather,

First let me say..obviously Stillman's worked..and Scarsdale probably would have too..if given enough time. I'm not trying to lecture you..as you obviously see what the problem is..however, this is why I hate to reccomend these types of plans to people. I think many of these fast loss plans get people addicted to loseing weight ultra fast. That in itself is not the problem..but the problem comes when they don't keep losing that fast. It kind of sets -up your head to expect that kind of loss..and when it doesn't happen ( and often the loss at first is dramatic, then slows for many of us) people tend to get depressed and turn to food or drink.

I gained a good 6 lbs over the holiday. My diet brains said.."ok, I can fix this by doing Stillman's for a few weeks" then I stopped. I realized instead of looking for a quick fix..I needed to work on why I ate over the hoidays and work on just eating clean. I re-started induction...and had a 1/2 lb gain my first 5 days. Frustrating to say the least..but reality is..my body was confussed..It wasn't that induction wasn't working..it was that my body after being so clean for so long..then going on a holiday overload..now back to clean..was not sure what to do. I had some great suport and insight from some of my favorite oldbies..and kept on. I lost 2 lbs the following week..and 2 more the week after that.

Yes, I could have probably dropped it much faster if I'd done Stillman's..but what consequences would that have been for my out of control eating? I felt it would have set me up to do it again..as I then could just do something extreme and get it off fast. It was definatly a hard lesson..but a good one for me. I needed reminding of what I need to eat daily to not just get a few lbs back off...but keep them off.

I'm sure you'll find your way, but maybe..just maybe you need to focus NOW on a plan you will stick too...that isn't so dramatic and has a longer lifespan?.

Also..try and start not useing the scale as your guide. You know if your eating well or not. The scale is just a tool..not the rule of healthy long-term eating.

I loved your posts, Lisa Rae. The longer I continue on the LC journey, the more I realise it's about learning about where my eating patterns come from and how to deal with the underlying issues / patterns in there.

This might be going off the OP's original point (sorry!) but I'm not about quick fixes anymore. I've been tempted to fat fast etc etc recently but I need to stick to what works for me in the longterm. That seems to be LC eating, exercise and plenty of water. Although quick weight loss sounds tempting, in truth, I'm having enough trouble catching my mind up to my body as it is. I suspect that super-quick drops would just freak me out!

Feather, thank you so much for putting your experience "out there" - not only was it brave but it really helped me think about that spiralling out of control that is all too easy to do

Aww, thanks guys !!!!! ( think that is the first time I have been called" old" anything and it made me smile ) LOL

And Alcestis, It still can be soooo hard for me to give up my old "diet" mentality! I mean let's face it..I've been doing low-carb a long time by many standards...yet compared to my 30+ years of yo-yo and binge eating..I'm still new as well

Not going to a quick fix may seem strange to some, especially because frankly it would work for me. But I also know how very easily it is for me to get sucked back into bad old mental and physical ideas, that got me large to begin with. I mean if quick fixes worked...I never would have ended up a very tight 26! This is the first time in my whole life that I have been a "normal" weight and size. First time I have ever exercised ( not even mentioneing I do it regularly now!) and I am very clear that the reason for this is not looking for a quick fix. It may have taken me longer then many..but honestly I am sure ( and for me to say this is HUGE) that I will never ever go back to my old life. I may struggle at times with a few lbs here and there..but I'm starting to realize even those I concider "normal eaters" also have this happen (low-carbers and those who aren't). Going off plan for months..or regaining this weight is not an option. Having a long-term livable plan for life is MY key to success

I dont think this can be said any better. Atkins in itself is an amazing program that works when followed. I dont understand why people do the fasts at all, but I am not going to go there. I think people DO need to try things for themselves and determine if they work or not. Just remember, more than losing weight, this is a journey to finding a way to live healthy

Feather..now I hoped you learned your lesson liquor is not good on this WOL because you loose all inhibitions...been there done that I am glad you got right back on track and learned from your mistake

Hey feather! I tried stillmans and lost 9lbs in 4 days..then worked my way back over to atkins. It works great..but my best advice would be....
Find a plan that fits your lifestyle and STICK WITH IT..even if the scale doesnt move for a month! Just keep it up, dont get discouraged. Eh if the scale doesnt move for 3 months then at that time I would say its ok to try out a new plan.

Good luck!

Whoa...
I did NOT expect this thread to still exist much less get these kind of moving and heartfelt replies!!!!!

THANK YOU ALL for your kind words, seriously. I am touched, I really am.
I genuinely felt shameful and like a big freakish pig.....

but I weighed in at 152 today. So I am almost back to where I was before my mishap.

Yes I was in a rush to lose, probably because I start school again on the 26th

I had no idea that this kind of extreme all or nothing mentality was problematic...how can i have an eating disorder if i'm overweight and dont throw up???????
