Rose, great post and reminder for all of us! You are right about having enough snacks/food on hand. I bring in a TON of food every week to put in our work refrigerator. I kid my co-workers saying it looks like I'm feeding a family of four! But I never know when I'm going to have a "hungry" day, and I do so much better if I have healthy snacks. I also keep hot chocolate packs in my desk, which is good and filling. I spend lots of time cutting up salads for lunch. I am worth it!!

Great pep talk, Rose.

I've been having a crummy week myself, but I have managed to ensure I didn't skip any exercise. (Another chilly 5-mile run done this morning!) I did eat 1 of the Kahlua brownies I made (darn it, they looked so impossibly good) for my friend and her boys. But, for the most part, I have also learned that putting a lot of junk in my mouth will not cure what ails me!

Looking great in my size 8 dress pants and a snappy new burgundy corduroy jacket from the Loft did make me feel good yesterday. And there is no situation that is going to make me sabotage that.

Well, I have a million things to do before we leave on vacation, not the least of which is to make sure my MiL is all squared away before we go. So I'm guessing this may be my last update until Monday, Nov. 16th.

I hope everyone has an OP week!!

6th day of Phase 1

I am new to this site and I am looking for support! Also, lots of information! I have struggled with my weight since I was 12. I just read I am only allowed 1 serving of nuts a day so for a few days since I started I cheated without knowing. I am not going to let that deter me from continuing on this journey! I feel good and I am doing so much planning. I have never planned my meals or food shopped before. I have only lived on my own for a year so this is a huge new experience. I look forward to eating healthy and losing weight!

Teacher, yup those nuts can add up real fast, LOL. I try to stay away from them for the most part except when I am on the road I will sometime grab a 1oz bag for the car along with a cheese stick

Rose - Wonderful Pep talk as always...

Well My veggie soup last night turned out too good, LOL Dh ate 4 bowls!
That is way too much, but at least there is nothing bad in there.
We are having it tonight too since I made so much and the veggies get soggy quick.

B - ww toast, egg, 2 turkey bacon

L - Veggie Soup

sn - cheese stick

D - Veggie Soup

sn - sf fudge bar

For nuts, I like pistachios or peanuts in the shell because you can't just pick up a handful and shove them in your mouth. Having to shell them slows me down and allows me to enjoy the flavor without overdoing it. Pistachios are one of the lowest calorie nuts, have potent antioxidant properties, and have been shown in studies to lower LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL.

Just getting home from a loooong day. Dd's theatre group is staging "Love Letters" and it was a remarkable opening night performance. The audience cried.

How are you doing tonight, Euphrates?

Just keep going. Follow the plan.

You could post menus so we can take a look, but it's not unusual to have a period of adjustment.

Emotional Eating

Food will not change anything, make anything better, stop any hurt. Emotional eating will make you feel out of control, feel unworthy, feel disappointed in yourself. You are a mature, grown-up person. You can take charge of yourself in any situation. To say we "can't" is ridiculous. We might "choose" not to, but we "can." What's past is past. Move on from this moment. Emotional hurts can't be healed by eating. Of course, you already know all this.

You took food with you, but not enough. Take way more than you think you will need. Take enough snacks so that you will not need to visit the vending machine. Nuts, string cheese, veggie sticks, hummus, protein powder to shake up, two dinners if necessary. Haul in a whole grocery sack full of good food. Every day that you don't give in, you will be emotionally stronger. Exercise. Work up a sweat. Take out your frustrations in movement. As you drop pounds, you will feel empowered. Put yourself in charge.

It does matter, it will change, you can do this, and I'm sorry you're hurting.
Thanks Euphrates for your honest sharing...it's why I came on to this site, and thank you Rose for your words of wisdom. Your "Pep Talk" really helped me also.

Need advice

Good morning,
Well I lost only three pounds on my very first week of SB. While not great, it's three pounds down instead of up and I, at least, broke my "sweet" habit (constant bingeing on candy/cake). I also realize that my portions need to be smaller but I am still adjusting and, as I say, to sort of "detox" myself from all the bad carbs is a great outcome.

I have a question.... I did over-do myself a little yesterday...had a little more carbs than I should. I was at a retreat at my church and ran out of most of the non-perishable foods that I could bring (nuts, tuna etc.) They had sandwhich wraps and I just took the meat out and also ate a lot of cole slaw, but I think it had some hidden sugars. I went out to dinner and had flounder (shouldn't have had the "stuffed version" as it probably had bread crumbs), also gave in and drank a couple glasses of white wine.

Since I'm not supposed to have most of this in the induction phase, did I mess things up. I am remembering from my Atkins days that after a few days of low carbs, your body burns fat but if you restart carbs again than you mess up the ketosis process and it is a major set-back?? Is this true that now I have to be diligent again for at leas three days for it to be working again? I had been doing so well with the first week of induction so I don't want to feel that I almost have to start all over again. Hope this makes sense and sorry so long. --Joan

Joanie - you do not have to start over.....just keep moving forward - we don't worry about ketosis with SB. Just stick to program from today on.....and drink a lot of water!!!

Thanks Radmom for getting back to me and quickly too. I was about to go into my "what's the use, I blew it mode" and setting myself up for defeat and just would keep on eating badly. So I will just continue doing the right thing. Hopefully next week I will see a few pounds loss again. Take care.

Holy Cow! Don't do that!! Just follow Cindy's advice and keep on going. Ketosis is not a part of SB and you don't have to be in ketosis to lose weight. Keep remembering that it's not all or nothing. Baby steps, baby steps.

Awww, you guys really ARE the best (and thanks for the PM to check up on me, Rose).

I'm doing well - I've just been off the past 2 days and it's been a fairly busy weekend. My mate and I slept 15 hours from Friday into Saturday, and then Saturday as spent a) chilling at home together, which is always extremely revitalizing for me, b) going to a NaNoWriMo write-in, which was hugely successful - my meltdown last week derailed that too, so I'm way behind, but if I can keep up the pace I did yesterday I'll be caught up in no time, and c) going to a poly potluck (for other like-minded folks like us weirdos) that was hugely successful and fun - got to see a bunch of people I knew and make new friends - next week we're having a meet-up at a local Panera (this was in Dayton, which is about an hour north of Cincy) for folks down here, and I'm totally excited! (And totally planning to eat at home before we go - no worries). Today, my kids are coming over this afternoon so I have chili (a HUGE batch - my kids like my chili and will gobble it up) in the crock pot, and need to do a bit of cleaning (oldest is pretty allergic to cats, so he'll take a sudafed when he walks in the door, but having as much cleaned up as possible before he gets here helps). And of course, work tonight - when I'll be back to posting with my usual verbosity.

So - last week's crisis has been averted, and I'm back on the horse. I expect the scale won't be kind tomorrow when I do my weigh in, but at least it wasn't a full-scale weeks-long binge I have to recover from. So, I'm feeling extremely hopeful - I CAN do this!

Okay, back to trying to make myself step away from the computer to do productive things like clean...

Must be something in the air this week...
I was there about mid-week, but everyone posted such encouragement, and Rose gave me a pep-talk - go back and read it, it may help you too.

You CAN do this!!

Hi All!

Newbie to the site. Dieting since 12. If I'm not losing, I'm gaining. If I'm not gaining, I'm losing. Vicious cycle... addicted to sugar/carbs... emotional eater... you name it!

So I'm glad I found this place. I've been doing South Beach for about a month. Lost 8 pounds in the first 2 weeks, but then Halloween came and I caved. So I'm here and getting back on track.

Just made some awesome lo-carb meatballs. Gonna make some lo-carb chayote mock apple crisp tonight too. Can't wait.

Thanks for being here.

It's been such a busy week, haven't had any time for anything but school and workout. Yesterday was my bonus - my dads cousin and his wife had invited me to a musical in San Francisco. We went to a really nice restaurant first. I ordered ratatouille with my fish and split a desert. No cravings today - and I love the fact that I could enjoy such a nice place to eat without feeling guilty. If I had stayed at the ketosis diet, I wouldn't been able to eat at all.

It's so cool to hear that so many of you have a relation to Norway. It's for sure a beautiful place, but right now, far colder than northern California.

Can I ask you how many of you that to the exercises from the SB supercharged book? I work out 3-4 times a week, usually step classes and some spinning, but I could certainly use some muscles...

It sounds like you had a good time with your family. It is really easy to eat out South Beach style.

I use weights about 3 times a week, not necessarily the exact workout in the book, but that is a good workout.

Wiz - {{hugs}} My following rant seems so insignificant after hearing about your friend.

Late check in...

Not really a check in as much as a "re committment"

As some of you may know, I have struggled on and off with smoking. A little over a month ago, I actually quit. I just put them down and that was that. Not even a puff since September 27. Yippee skippy and pass the Reeses.... I gave myself one month and 10 pounds to get past the smoking thing. Well, it's been One month and 12 days... and 14 pounds!!! I was so upset I crawled in bed and cried.

But I guess crying isn't going to make my pants fit any better; so I crawled out of bed, tossed the last of the halloween candy and all the other temptations in my house; had a talk with mom and grandma and explained the situation so that I could get their support and let them know that my refusal to eat dinner with them every night is not personal but necessary for ME and the things that I need for myself...but I'll be happy to fix dinner for all of us a couple of nights a week if they'll eat my way (and they will).

So, I guess I need lots of support in getting back on track... and I am so thankful that all of you had issues with the halloween candy and stuff too.
