Well I finally made it home. It took 3 hours at the Endo appt. He was running late and then when I finally got in he didn't have all my blood work. We had to call the hospital and fax it over. So long story short he want's me to have the other side of my Thyroid removed and do RAI. I told him I would like to wait a bit. He is doing some marker testing and an ultrasound every 6 months to make sure nothing comes back. He said that the surgeon should have removed both sides to begin with. Ugh I am a bit upset over this.
So he gave me a check up and started me on 100mg of Synthroid for 5 weeks and then we will check my blood and how I feel to see if we need to increase or decrease. Hopefully all will go well I really don't know what to expect. Does any one here take Synthroid?

Reno, I am also hypothyroid. I take 75 mg. of armour natural thyroid because it has both the t3 and the t4 in it. I used to take synthroid. I switched because someone said the natural would be better, but I really didn't feel any different. I did not have problems with synthroid. They might have to adjust your dose up or down. I'm so sorry to hear you may have to have another surgery. That was very tough news.
![]() Luisa, too bad about the ranunculus, but what a beautiful and cheerful border you've created! Thanks for sending the photo; it brightened up my day! Wiz, I could sure use some of your stoicism re passing on the desserts! Glad you and Jim had wonderful family reunions, and exercised portion control! ![]() Glad you're enjoying summer vacation, Dani. I see the scale has moved down some more for you, too! ![]() I lost 2 lbs. this week, basically on the "Phase 1.5" as someone so aptly named it. Lots of vegetables, lean protein, a little fruit, mostly berries, and a bit of whole grain bread here and there. I hope the weight will continue to come off with this way of eating. It's something I can live with. Rose, that is just a divinely beautiful picture! Have a great week, everyone! Serena |

Yesterday's Phase 1.5:
B: veggie omelet S: string cheese L: 6 in. turkey sub (ww roll) S: small peach D: Jennie-O lean turkey burger (no bun), broccoli First time trying the Jennie-O frozen turkey patties...very, very yummy! Even DH liked them...and so quick and easy, just threw them on my George Foreman grill. Serena- yes, I've had a little downward movement on the scale recently. Congrats on being down 2 pounds! Phase 1.5 rocks! ![]() |

Hello all!
Just finished up a 5-mile run on the boardwalk. I did 2 of the miles as HIIT (jog, sprint, jog, sprint at every telephone pole.) I don't get at all winded when I do my usual 5 miles, but I could really feel this. Scale was down 1.5 lbs this morning, so I probably just need one more day of Phase 1 to get back to my normal weight. I can tell that these summer weekends and all the parties (graudations, birthdays, etc.) we are invited to are going to cause me to be a Phase 1 weekday girl all summer to keep my weight on an even keel. No sun yet here in NJ, but at least it is dry so far today. I'll take it. Dani, you may want to try the Purdue chicken burger patties as well. Great for throwing on the grill right from the freezer. Serena, nice work on the 2 lbs!! Reno, I'm sure that was not the news you were looking for. Hang in there. Stella, Rose, Cindy - I had no idea so many of you had trouble sleeping. It is very rare that I have trouble falling asleep - but I always read for a while. That does it every time. Beth, You and my mom would get along great. We grew up in a no TV house! Well, we had one - but we kids didn't get to watch it very often. I have to laugh, because my Dad did love to watch sports. So we grew up watching the Phillies and Eagles because that was often the only TV shows that would be turned on. Of course, I am a huge Philly sports fan because of it. I'm not sure that's what my Mom had in mind by limiting our TV viewing In any case, we are all avid readers, that's how we filled our indoor time. I still read books every day of my life. Susie, I'm with you. Ocean county is not exactly brimming with gourmet, healthy food stores Gotta get moving, work is calling later folks!!

Good morning, Down 2 lbs from the weekend so I am happy!
Went to bed at 1Am last night! Sheesh. I was in bed reading and just could not zonk out. So, I missed early am yoga. Reno - I had 1/2 my thyroid out in 2008. I would hate to have the other 1/2 taken out. I am on levoxyl (spelling?) - which is the generic version on sythroid. There is a extensive thyroid thread on here under the health matters section I think |

Good Morning Beachers!
Reno...sorry to hear about possibly another surgery! We're here for you to vent, support, etc....whatever you need! Dani...WTG on the 2 lbs! I pre-weighed myself this morning (I usually weigh-in on Wednesdays, but couldn't wait), and I'm down 6 lbs.!!! Holy crap! That's 16 lbs. total. I'm sure it has something to do with me being sick last week, but I'll take it! I'm going to attempt to make a protein shake tonight to have for breakfast tomorrow...instead of using tofu (hate the stuff), I was going to use powdered whey protein that I recently purchased on netrition.com. Any suggestions on how much to use? Any recipes? I'm going to check-out the recipes forum, too, but just wanted to check with my beachy friends. Have a great day everyone! |

Protein shakes ...
Susie --
We've been making the shakes with the recipe Cindy posted under the protein shakes thread and THEY ARE GOOOOOOOOOD! HOWEVER -- add your ingredients appropriate for the phase you are on ; ) ALMOST FORGOT -- THE SHAKE BELOW IS ENOUGH FOR TWO SERVINGS! Here's a copy / paste of her post: We made up our own and it's awesome! We have it almost 5 days out of 7. 1 cup of Milk 2 T of ff, sf vanilla, white chocolate, or cheesecake instant pudding 1 t of vanilla 1/4 cup of yogurt (we use fage) 2 scoops protein powder Frozen berries (We are well beyond P1) A few ice cubes. Blend in the blender until thick! This is awesome.

Thanks guys
![]() I am a bit disappointed but since it is a slow growing Cancer, I have decided to just "watch" things for a while, marker testing and ultrasound, to make sure all is well. Right now I just really need to get me TSH levels down. Can any of you tell me how long it took for you to start to feel better on the meds? Okay on to more up beat things. I will be posting menus again and getting serious. With any luck these meds will help me to drop some weight. According to what I've read on line a lot of people had weight loss with Synthroid. I will be going back to Ph 1 for 2 weeks and on from there. I hope it doesn't take too long to get the dosage right. I will be back to post a menu after I do some shopping this morning. |

Hi all,
Reno - it took me about 1-2 weeks to feel better. once I started, I began having weird dreams for about 1 week and they stopped! I noticed I wasn't tired all the time, But I still am abnormally cold and breezes literally chill me to the bone ( in winter, i sleep in a hat!).Youve got to make sure you have your meds on an empty stomach. |

Feeling a bit better emotionally today. I am ready to get off this roller coaster ride! Menu: Brunch - small filet mignon, sauteed mushrooms & onions, salad Snack - ff plain yogurt with blueberries & 1/2 cup milk (blended into a smoothie) Dinner - lean pork loin, steamed broccoli Snack - pecans, decaf sf vanilla iced latté That's the plan anyway. Dani - loved the pics from No Doubt. I am trying to convince someone... anyone really... that they need to take me to see Rick Springfield on July 10. I love love love him! Question about protein powder... I really never use it. Are there recommendations in the book? I love smoothies and would most likely make one of these for breakfast or snack but I just don't know that much about protein powder and have always figured the the fruit & yogurt or fruit & milk smoothies were enough. Thoughts?

no I was about 180 when i went into the hospital and you can see where I am now. If anything, I have to be REALLY consistent. When I am really consistent, I win! Even a bit off here and there which I used to be able to fudge, I cannot now. You've got to just power through til it becomes second nature |

Reno, my thyroid had a tumor of sorts on it - no cancer. So, after that was taken out, my thyroid was cut in half. After that... it was sluggish. I cannot remember if that means hypo or hyper - NOT the one that makes you skinny (ala Don Knotts).
But everyone is different, you may suddenly drop tons of weight - but you may just have a bit more energy.Last edited by stellamystar; 06-23-2009 at 08:50 PM.. |

Stella--how about some almonds? I often eat 8 or 10 at night with some string cheese if I'm really hungry. congrats on the 2 lbs.!
Reno, I am hypothyroid. My meds need to be taken in the morning 1 hour before eating, or two hours after. I think it took two or three weeks for me to notice I felt better, but it is kind of gradual. This will probably help you lose weight, but is not likely to be a miracle; you'll still have to work at it, but it should be a little easier. glad you can just watch your condition for awhile and not have to do the surgery immediately. Susie, 16 lbs. gone--that's fabulous! ![]() Wiz, WTG on getting the party weight back off! I'm going to have a big challenge this week because it's dh's birthday and we're going to have a Japanese kaiseki dinner. That's where you don't get to order, they bring you course after course of the chef's choices. Guess I'll have to bring along a to go container! ![]() |

Any Quinoa (keen wa) eaters out there?
If you haven't tried quinoa, it a gluten free 'grain' (actually a seed) that has a 12-18% protein content. It's a great source of fiber too. For those of you who eat a lot of oatmeal, quinoa makes a nice addition to it, giving you a little more protein than just a plain bowl of oats. Breakfast Quinoa 1/2 cup of quinoa rinsed and drained 1 cup of water 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats Sweetener of your choice You can also stir in some walnuts, peaches, blueberries etc... Place the quinoa in a sauce pan with water and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes than add oats and any sweetener, fruit and nuts you want to add. I always add a little vanilla and cinnamon. Simmer for 10-15 minutes more until light and fluffy. (This should serve 2-4 people depending on serving size) It heats up great, so I make it and eat it for a couple of days. Beth ~ |

Good Morning! I am all set to be below sig weight tomorrow. Yea Baby! Will let you know how it goes.
![]() Beth - I love Quinoa. I got a receipe from whole foods dot com for lemon/broccoli quinoa that is always a winner around here - very zingy. Thanks for the sweet version, though! Serena - String cheese! I forgot about that. Will pick some up at the store. That is a good little snack. |
