Hi! I'm not new to LCF, but I am new to South Beach. I have been fooling myself that I look fine and all that stuff. Anyway, I am on meds for high blood pressure (have been for several years) and just got some blood work done. I have low potassium and am now taking potassium pills (yuck...I hate them) and my triglycerides were high and my good cholesterol was low (over cholesterol was okay). Anyway, I need to lose about 100 pounds

I don't know how I got myself in such a way I was chubby as a child and all through school and then lost a lot of weight on WW right after school and even became a lifetime member. I kept my weight good for awhile and then got married and had three babies in three years. I got pregnant on my honeymoon and went on from there Now, I have three beautiful kiddos! My oldest daughter is 14, my son is 12.5, and my youngest daughter is 11.5.

Anyway, I am 43 and sick of the way I look! I have tried every diet under the sun and only stick with each one a few hours to a few days. I was a stay-at-home mom for many years, but now I work about 25 hours a week and am looking for a full-time job.

My doctor told me to definitely do low carb and recommended Atkins. I do like Atkins, but I thought I would give SB a try. I did try it before, but it was one of those for a few hours or a few days and I cheated.

So far so good today. I had two scrambled eggs with some leftover steak from last night's BBQ. I plan on having a salad with something for lunch. I'm working on dinner. I really need to brush up on the SB book...I'll do that tonight.

Michele

GymMommy! THere are LOTS of great recipes on this website too! I just started Saturday, so I'm a "newbie" too. I've done SB before and liked it but never stuck to it. I HAVE to now.

Anyway, glad you're here. The ladies on this site are great!

Hiya, newbies!

MJ, don't weigh yourself so many times a day. It sounds like you're trying to pull yourself together. Can you substitute prayer or meditation? Journaling? Something calming and centering.

GymMommy, your teens will really appreciate having a healthy mom.

Who was reporting on the last thread that they'd gone running? WTG! I have been really enjoying running again. I am trying to make sure I do AM and PM cardio, even if it's just a walk. Nothing like the endorphins and break from the kiddos.

Good morning!

Welcome to all of the new folks!! FYI. I lost 43 lbs last year on SB and (so far ) have kept it off successfully following the maintenance plan. I do have some ups and downs, but if I stay within 2 lbs of my goal weight - I don't stress over it!! However, after a weekend of family parties (graduation, birthday, etc.) I am exactly 2.5 lbs over my goal weight Sooooo, that means a couple of days of Phase 1 for me.

I ran 5 miles this morning on the boardwalk, adding in a new wrinkle. I did 2 of the miles using interval training (jog, sprint, jog, sprint) I could really feel the difference in my routine. Good stuff.

Hope everyone had a good weekend and stayed focused!!

Rose, thanks for starting us off (as always!!)

from mjmama last week...

How often do you ladies do it? I confess it is an OBSESSION for me and i weigh myself numerous times a day. (Of course, i only count the very first one.)

I know different diets recommend diff. things: some say weigh every day, some say once/week, etc..

PS. JUST HAD A (oops) great run/walk. I ran for a total of 18 min. and walked for 12. Until Friday, it had been 8 yrs since i had last ran.

Hope you all have a successful week.
I weigh myself once a week...like the others, in the past, I've weighed myself everyday, but it makes me so frustrated when I go up and have no reason to be. It can be hard, though....walking by the scale...the temptation is there to just jump on. Isn't it funny....now I can't wait to weigh myself, but before SB I would hide the scale...never wanted to know how much I weighed.

WTG on the walk/run! I've GOT to get out there. I've been so busy around the house, I could really use a good walk/run around the neighborhood.

Welcome GymMom! You found a great thread AND a great way of eating! South Beach is just wonderful! And this is a great time of year to do it...so many fresh veggies to be had (and fruits once on phase 2). I'm in my 2nd week of Phase 1 and already feel fantastic! Good Luck!!

Finally caught up on all the reading. Camping was fun but I gotta tell you, this extra weight I have put on sure shows when sleeping on a cot. My back, legs, everything is killing me. WE did manage a short walk in between rain, LOL. It was nice but I still have zero energy! I can't wait until my Dr appt on the 22nd. I really need to feel good again. My weight has never been this high and its just going up doing mostly the right things. Today I go shopping and its the first day kids are out of school, so the plan is to take walks, short ones that I can manage at this time with no energy. I am also going to take the time to plan a healthy menu before going to the store. The kids are going to find a whole new love for fruit and veggies this summer, LOL. Today I will treat them to a healthy Subway sandwich while in Reno. I really don't want this summer to go by feeling this way. New meds or not I need to shake this.

So onward... to the newbies. I have much weight to lose too.
I get down sometimes thinking about it all, but then I watch shows like last night on the 1,000 pound man losing 1/3 of his weight and I think d@mn I have nothing to lose compared to him and he's doing it!

Congrats to all you exercise nuts out there, LOL. I wish I was amongst you.
Personally I have always loathed it. I need to move more.

Okay enough, time to plan a menu and get to the store.

Hey everyone,

Wiz, good idea to re-introduce ourselves...we've had quite a few new people in the check-in lately and I haven't been posting that much lately. Hello to all the new posters/SBers. I have lost 70 pounds following South Beach since August 2007 and am getting to probably at the hardest stage in the journey, maintainence.

Yesterday I went to my students' graduation ceremony. I always love graduations, especially being a teacher. I teach students who have been labeled "at-risk" for finishing school, so to see them up there beaming with pride over their accomplishments makes me so happy. Many of them are the first ones in their family to finish school which is the icing on the cake!

I had a great moment yesterday that is weight related. I saw a former student of mine for the first time since he graduated last year. Before the ceremony, I waved to him from the other side of the auditorium and he didn't wave back. When I ran into him afterwards he came up to me and said, "Mrs. D, I'm sorry, I didn't recognize you! You've gotten so much skinnier!" I thanked him and told him that his comment about my weight made my day!

Hoping this is going to be a great week! Only 9 more days of work left until summer vacation!

Reno- That is awesome that you are going to get healthy with the kids this summer!

Hi everyone- newbie here... glad to meet you all! I started SB last week, didn't lose an ounce, then blew it by having a few cocktails Friday night, ( I knew I had a cake tasting Sat for my wedding so I guess I figured WTH) then decided to just start over today... so here I am. I am thinking the nuts have been messing with me, even though i count them out I had them most days last week. How about cheese? I eat alot of it on SB (low fat).. I am just trying to figure out why this time nothing is happening. Grrr. I was on SB last year and lost about 18 lbs, then somehow slowly gained it all plus 4! another grrr... so again here I am looking for any suggestions- my day so far

b- 2 scrambled eggs, 2 turkey bacon, v8
s-none (got busy)- oh had 2 cups coffee
l- salad with chix, tomatoes, orange pepper, cuke, balsamic viniagrette
s- about to have some cottage chz with tomato
d-?

this is pretty standard for me, with a veggie filled dinner and some kind of meat. (but I am dropping the nuts and watching the cheese this week) sorry for the lengthy post!

Welcome Lucky!
This is my 2nd go-around with SB...my downfall last time was cheese & nuts....my lack of being able to control eating them. This time, when it comes to nuts, I only eat almonds or pistachios, and after I buy them, I divide them into a serving size & put them into the snack ziplock bags...this way, when the bag is empty, I'm done. I do not allow myself to go back for a 2nd bag...otherwise it will lead to a 3rd, 4th, etc. As for cheese...I LOVE CHEESE...so I have to limit myself with that too. I only buy LF mozz cheese sticks and Baby Bell cheese for snacks, I take one to work for a snack and I'm good to go. The only other cheese I have in my house is LF american & swiss...and that is only used for my boston lettuce wrap "sandwiches". I have to be strict with myself with these items cuz I know I will have no control and then be discouraged as to why I'm not losing. I love the idea of cottage cheese w/tomato! Cottage cheese fills me up quite fast...and to pair it up with a yummy tomato sounds great! Good luck!!

I am back from Chicago and on plan. We walked a lot so I don't feel too bad. Did have beer and some treats...managed to drink water for the most part. I am glad to be home.

B: egg, cheese, Canadian Bacon
L: Wendys SW Salad
S: cheese & olives
D: Roasted chicken, tomato/mozz salad

I love Olives! I wish Costco would get an olive bar - they would be in business with me.

Hope everyone has a great week....

Here I am at day 7 of week 1. I did great for the first 4 days, then the weekend came. I didn't do terrible, but I wasn't totally on plan. So, tomorrow I will weigh and then I will know if the weekend was a bust. I decided to just weigh once a week so, hopefully, there will be a loss and I won't know about the ups and downs. We had some friends from CA stop in and they brought apricots picked from their tree. Couldn't pass those up - so good, but not so good for phase 1.

Todays menu:
B - 2 boiled eggs, v8
S - celery and laughing cow
L - protein hamburger at In-n-Out (lettuce wrapped-no bun)
S - pistachios, left over roast beef
D - cobb crab salad (from SB book), caulflower, flax muffins
D - nsa fudgsicle

Hi, I haven't been on this board in about a year. It's nice to see that some of you are still here from a year ago and looking so thin, makes me really wish I had stuck with it! Wiz, you look amazing!! Great job!

We recently adopted three girls from Ethiopia giving us 9 children and although things have been great, it's been kind of stressful. Unfortunately I've gained back 15 of the 70 lbs I lost. So, if you'll have me back, I'm ready to jump back in and try to lose this last 40-45 lbs.

Good morning!

I felt horrible last night. Not sure what was going on. So I took a rest day from exercise this morning. Sometimes you just have to listen to your body...

Not much to report here, just getting ready for a busy day at work. Whew, they are really getting their money's worth out of me lately

Beth, so good to see you back!! Congratulations on your newest family members, what a wonderful event. I'm sure you can get that 15 lbs back off in no time - you know the drill. Jump in with Phase 1 and get some exercise (as if taking care of 9 kids isn't busy enough!! )

Have a good day gang!!

I have just been thinking how important stress is in weight gain/loss! What else can we all do about managing stress?

Beth, WTG in adopting. I work with special education kids, and I'm passionate about them.

Stella, welcome back!

Wiz, feel better!

My plan of hiding in my closet eating hershey bars wasn't working out so well for me ... so, I'm open for suggestions.

Good Morning!
We got our farmer's coop bag last night so I am LOADED with lovely brown eggs. I made some deviled eggs..will probably make a quiche, egg salad, and some other eggy things.
Also got some lettuce, basil, sausage...
Hmm..sausage and eggs - I think I figured out my plan!

Slept in this morning - we were up late watching Steven Colbert in Iraq (all week)..so funny. Tune in if you think about it! They shaved his head last night.

Catch yall later......

BETH, Welcome back. 15 lbs, - hey, you can shake that in no time. Get out the veggies. I know what you mean - Dani, Kelly, and Wiz have been losing so quickly - they are an inspiration.

Good morning everyone! It's been a busy few days, so I'm just getting a chance to check in now

gymmommy - I know what you mean about just being "sick" of how things are. I finally got to the point where I was just fed up with myself and I knew that I needed to do something about it. I did really well on SB before I got pregnant with my daughter and it was only the pregnancy that caused me to go off plan (looking back... I sure should have stayed on plan as I had done super well up to that point).

mjmama - great job on going out to run! I'm hoping that I can soon build up to running like that. Right now, I'm just taking it slow and walking as much as I can. I must admit that I haven't done nearly as much exercise this week as I should have.

renomom - I love camping! And I hear you about the sleeping on the cots. One of my "must packs" for my camp list is my Advil for the morning as I know that I'm gonna hurt! I'm going to try to get out more and camp now that my daughter is a bit older and I feel more comfortable leaving her overnight. And I would like to go on a few camping trips this summer with the whole family.

Dani - what a great compliment from your student! Those are the best! What an inspiration you are! I hope that I can look back in a year or so and see as much progress!

lucky

Beth - nice to "meet" you! Wow! 9 kids! That must keep you moving That's so exciting. What are the ages of all your kids?

This week I've only lost 1/2 to 1 pound on the scale. I've been really great about eating properly and I still haven't "cheated" or "treated" myself at all! I was really hoping to do better. I know that I'm probably not moving as much as I should and that's why. I guess I thought that since I was eating TEN times better than I was before that I should see more of a difference. I do think that my clothes are starting to fit a little better (or is that just wishful thinking? lol). I was doing some reading and it said that when you switch over to phase 2... there can be a few weeks where you don't see nearly as much loss or even a small gain in some cases until your body adjusts. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I know that it's made me hesitate on adding more fruits and whole grains. I have been slowly adding one fruit and one whole grain a day, but I'm scared to add more. The only thing I've really done differently in eating is not have as many snacks. Could this be affecting my weight loss? I haven't been as hungry though.

Hope you are all doing well.

Hi beachers,

Just a quick visit to say hi. I haven't posted much here lately because I've been so busy .

I guess I should follow Dani's and Wiz's example and introduce myself, with so many new faces here! ( to all of you!). I started SB at the same time as Wiz and lost about the same amount of weight, but have been having a really rough time in the last few months. I haven't changed my eating habits, and have upped my exercise, but I'm not only not losing anymore, I've gained (anywhere from 4-8 lbs. above siggy weight, depending on the day--I do a lot of bouncing around ). The nurse at the local clinic says it's probably due to hormonal issues (pre-menopause ). It is VERY frustrating, to say the least! But I am trying to just keep on with it and do the best I can.

Beth - so good to see you back! Oddly enough, I was just thinking of you the other day (along with some of the other people who were around last year and sort of disappeared) and wondering what happened to everyone.

Cookie - any luck on the job front? (or did I miss something along the way?)

Reno - you can do it! Don't let things get you down.

Rose - are you back from your visit to my home state? Reading about the pickle barrel had my mouth watering

Rich - you look great!

No time for more right now, have to get back to work. to everyone - hope you all have a great day!

Morning Ladies - and Jim, Rich I did okay yesterday but not perfect. I am now having a problem with my Siatic nerve and it is making it hard to walk. I did go grocery shopping yesterday and it was quite painful. I am going to take a short walk with the kids today. I HAVE to get this weight off I am really feeling it. I need to cook more which should be easier now that the kids are out of school. Tonight I am making some Turkey meatballs and some sort of veggie. I had cantalope for breakfast, which is all that sounded good. I need to throw some protein in there soon.

Beth - Nice to "meet" you. My DH and I did Foster Care for 7 years and had 6 children all under the age of 7. I can't imagine 9. We adopted a little girl, she is now 4. What a blessing to have you as parents, and to be such a good example in healthy eating.

Dani - What a compliment!!! I yearn for that day. I plan on attending our old church services in Reno once I lose some weight. It will be nice to see if anyone notices. My BF is the pastor there.

Well I need to get this house clean so I can take the kids for that walk. It's kinda over cast today so it should be a nice day to get out, not too hot.

Thanks for the welcome back everyone!!!

Last year I was 30 lbs from goal and had an appointment with a plastic surgeon for a tummy tuck consultation, then we felt called to adopt these girls so everything came to a screeching halt. I knew my money was better spent on saving these girls than a TT. I kind of lost my motivation to lose weight with out the carrot of the TT hanging in front of me. I maintained for a long time but then with all the stress of traveling to Ethiopia and adding three more to the family, I really lost it. I wasn't kidding about hiding in the closet with a Hershey bar!!

Melody, These are the ages of our kids, Our oldest just turned 16, the rest are 13, 11, 10, 7, 5, 4, 3, and almost 2. 4 are homemade, 3 were born in Ethiopia and 2 were born in South Korea. Yes, they sure keep me busy! You would think I would be thin by now, just from chasing them around...but unfortunately, No.

I have a blog if anyone is interested in reading it. It's mostly about adoption and pictures of our kids. Warning- It is blatantly Christian.

We got the girls in Feb so if you want to read about our adoption trip, read there.

Contentment in the chaos

Beth ~

Just checking in...have had a real bad day & a half....personally...not on SB...was involved in an accident...all is ok...just very shaken up. I have no appetite. Just had some steamed brocoli & shrimp from a local chinese place....no rice or sauce.

I just wanted to stop by & say hi...I'll try to stop by tomorrow.

Thanks Melody, Nicki and Reno...it was definitely a great thing to hear! Especially since I've been a little down about my weight loss slowing down lately.

back Beth! I remember you as well from last year. You must be a very busy lady! I'll check out your blog soon.

Mjmama- hang in there!
