Is there somewhere, either on the board or in the book where it tells how many servings of each food group we should be eating? For example, could I have a 1/2 c of cottage cheese more than once a day?

Also, do you guys still lose weight even with out exercising? I am having bad knee problems and can't even go for a walk at this point.

Thanks,

I've done much better at losing with exercise. Bad knees? How about swimming? Is there a community pool in your area (or perhaps you have a pool)? Also, ellipticals are *supposed* be easier on the knees than walking. Can you bike ride?

I get confused as well about allowed foods / servings size. I just try my best. I usually try to squeeze in more veggies for snacks. I've found I just stall, stall, stall with grains (oh -- you are a celiac(?) so I guess you don't do grains). DH and & just restarted about 5 +/- weeks ago and we are doing really well this time around. My cravings have finally gone (I don't do diet sodas or artificial sweetners tho). DH is still struggling with cravings.

Just keep plugging along, Beth. It took me almost three weeks before I started seeing any noticable weight loss.

Hi all! I am still staying on plan, today is day 10. Rose, I so appreciate your comments and knowledge and help on keeping us newbies on track. I know I need to post my menus more often, but life happens and it does not get done.

Someone mentioned they wanted some ideas for desserts. I have a recipe for one I tried. I picked up "The South Beach Diet Supercharged" at the library. I have the original book, but have enjoyed reading the updated version and checking out the recipes. I have it for 1 more week and want to try some of these. The one I tried is:

MAPLE ALMOND FLAN
3 Tb slivered almonds
8 oz canned ff evap. milk
1/4 c plus 2 Tb ff milk
1/2 c egg substitute
1 1/2 Tb granular sugar sub.
1/4 t almond extract
1/4 t vanilla extract
4 Tb sf maple-flavored syrup

Heat oven to 275. toast almonds until golden (abt 8 min). cool, set aside.
In saucepan, combine evap milk and ff milk, heat until scalded but not boiling.
In lg bowl, whisk tog egg sub, sugar sub. and almond and vaillla extracts. Add 1/2 milk mixture and whisk, then whisk in remaining milk mixture.
Divide flan among 4 custard cups. Place cups in a baking pan and add hot water to come halfway up cups. Bake until flans are set, about 25 min. (I cooked a while longer). cool in pan, then chill in ref. for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Half an hour before serving, remove flans from frig. Just before serving, run a knife around edges and invert flans onto plaates. Drizzle each with 1 Tb syrup and sprinkle evenly with almonds.

This was very good, even my DH liked it!

Thanks for the ideas, I went to an orthopedic surgeon this week, my cartilage is mostly gone and I have a lot of bone spurs. So, I have constant bone against bone rubbing in my knees. (it makes a lovely noise) they say I'm too young for knee replacement, so I'm on anti-inflammatories and trying to do the exercises they gave me to strengthen the muscles around my knees. The Dr said he could give me cortisone shots but they don't last long and he could go in and clean things out but that's not a permanent cure either so he says there really isn't anything he can do and I just need to learn to live with it. ( I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion...) I can't go for a walk, I struggle going up and down stairs, I can't sleep because of the pain...you get the idea... Makes life as a mom to 9 kids kind of hard!
Anyways, I know the best thing would be to lose weight and definitely not to gain any, so that's the big reason why I'm trying to get back on track. I think probably Pilate's is my best bet for exercise, I know that doesn't require a lot of knee bending.

On a good note, I've been in a lot less pain since I quit eating sugar. Has anyone else seen a connection between sugar and body aches? I always seem to have less aches and pains when I'm off sugar.

Hi all,
Haven't posted in a while. I'm still OP and I've lost 2 pants sizes(I actually bought a new pair of jeans for an interview and had to turn around and exchange them for smaller) in the couple of months I've done SB. Just wanted to say hi and maybe give a little inspiration to the new people.

Cheers, all.

Beth, my DH had a similar sounding knee problem. He has had his cleaned out and been through physical therapy twice. His Dr. mentioned that every extra pound translates to 8 extra pounds of stress on your knees. So 50 lbs = 400 lbs of stress. That's a lot! Anti-inflammatories caused his stomach to bleed, so that was short lived. PLEASE research the effects of cortisone/ steroid shots before you decide to do that.

It IS possible to grow a new layer of cartilage, thin, but there nevertheless. He had bone rubbing on bone and now has a thin cartilage layer. One thing that helped him greatly was taking glucosamine/chondroitin/msm combination. Not the drug store stuff though. PM me if you are interested in trying that.

You're quite right about the sugar/pain connection. Sugar causes inflammation in your body.

Me!

I did the same thing last night with some fruit that was on its last legs (2 apricots and a small nectarine). That put me over my fruit servings for the day, but I figure that if I'm going to go overboard on something, an extra serving of fruit is the least of my worries.

Beth~

You can always try glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate -- lots of people have good luck with that. Did your physician talk to you about viscosupplementation as an option? Also -- cherry supplements are *supposed* be quite beneficial--do a search on that or drop me a line and I can pass along a link to you.

The sugar debate -- Once I have all of the sugar out of my system I no longer feel like a giant three-toed sloth. Really. In addition to cleaning the sugar out -- I find that processed flours, etc. also make me lethargic feeling and I feel much better once I have that out of my system as well. Another thing I have noticed is that if I consume ANYTHING that has sweetner in it (Splenda, etc.) it sends me into a crave-fest that I have to fend off for the rest of the day. So--I try to limit my consumption of really sweet tasting items (this does not include naturally sweet foods such as fruits). It's just easier on me.

OH AND -- Yes I have noticed that my joints feel much better -- don't know if it is the lack of sugar, weight loss or exercise or a combination of all three.

Morning gang. I finally downloaded some info on exercises to help my Sciatica, hopefully I can start to walk once the inflamation and pain goes away. I made a vow to God that I will never take mobility for granted again. I am in so much pain just from walking around yesterday. Today I am taking it east and not leaving the house. Dinner tonight is leftover chicken burritos for DH and the kids. I am having grilled lemon chicken over romaine, with tomatoes and red onion. I will make my own honey mustard dressing. Lunch will be egg salad on thin bread. Breakfast id leftover turkey meatballs and a cheese stick, LOL. At this point in time I am concentrating on not gaining any more weight. I am counting the days to my Endo appt and getting these hormones figured out. I also called the County Clerks office and got excused from Jury Duty due to my Medical condition. Thank God!!! Okay so for now I'm gonna go lay on the couch and rest this nerve.

Oh and No Soda Day 2!!!

Good morning Beachers.
I have set aside today to give my apartment a thorough cleaning from top to bottom. What this basically means is that I'll be posting and fooling around on the computer a lot today, with some cleaning thrown in periodically.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Well, I'm sick again with a crappy cold, so although my eating is pretty good, exercise is not-happening right now. So sick of being sick. Everyone at work (students, teachers, administrators) is sick and we seem to be just passing the same darn thing around to each other.

On a positive note...I have just 5 more days of school left. Then I'll be on summer vacation. Can't wait!

Hope everyone has a great on-plan weekend!

Mjmama- Congrats on your loss for the week! Keep it up!

Hi Dani.
I hope you feel better real soon. It's definitely no fun being sick.

I'm around the board quite a bit actually and read this thread almost every day. I just don't always have something to share, and when I do it's usually something pretty silly. I'm still on-plan but I've gone back to being a vegetarian Beacher since that is what feels best for me.

Luckily I have Rose for guidance in that area.

Lots of new faces around here and some great weightloss successes!

I have a question that i PROBABLY already know the answer to, but i''ll ask anyway

Are there any acceptable frozen meals for phase 1? Sometimes, i just REALLY don't feeli like cooking or i don't feel like thinking. I try to cook the same meal for me and family, but it doesn't always happern, sosome days i'm doing double duty and just wouldn't mind a break.

So, anyone know of any and who sells them?

WTG on the weight loss guys!!!

I just got some Whey Protein in the mail from Netrutious.com. I want to use it for protein shakes. Does anyone have any good recipes?

All of my in-laws are in town and are staying at my house...so I better get back to them...I've hid long enough!

Have a great Saturday!!

Beth and Mjmama WTG on the losses!

Mjmama - The only frozen meals I would suggest are your own. When you make a legal meal double it and freeze portions for you. I did this on Atkins all the time, especially with casseroles.

Jim - LOL I too am suppose to be cleaning today. I am determined to go through my kids rooms and chuck the junk. I know that if I didn't have a computer I would get so much more done, LOL. I'm addicted.

So last night we went to the Tractor Pulls (total redneck experience,LOL)
They had so many venders serving yummy smelling food. I ordered a bottled water! But man I wanted them tacos! Yesterday was a 100% on plan day, and today I plan the same. Still no soda too

B- egg salad on thin bread (this stuff is a God send)

L - salad with onion, tomatoes and chicken, honey mustard

D - Burgers with bacon (Turkey) and cheese and a small salad

snacks will be the usual string cheese, nuts etc...

It actually felt good having a big old salad for dinner last night while the rest of them were eating huge chicken burittos. I sat down with my salad and DH was eyeing it saying "Mmm what's that?" I just looked at him and said "MINE"

Okay I need to get to those rooms, Have a great OP weekend guys
