anxious about switching
Hi folks--I am a kimkins survivor who has been doing Atkins with no weight loss at all--as a matter of fact, I have gained 8 pounds since starting Atkins. I have recently heard that hypothyroid folks need more carbs, so I am looking at the SBD as a possible landing place--but am anxious about the weight gain I expect from the switch from Atkins to SBD--can anyone give me some insight into that? How much did you gain when you upped your carbs from induction levels? I am extremely carb sensitive, and gain water weight immediately if I go over 35 carbs a day, so you can see that this might be anxiety provoking--I would appreciate any and all thoughts

I think you should work on healing your metabolism and let the weight chips fall where they may for a while. We don't do "induction" on SB and we don't count carbs. We eat from the food lists and follow the menu plan guidelines. If you follow the plan by the book and stay away from all the "legal" junky recipes, you should be able to repair your broken metabolism and begin to lose weight. As you said, you gain water weight, so what's the big deal. It's water, not fat, and will come back off in due time. You're right about hypothyroid patients needing more carbs (and calories). See Nonstickpam's posts for more info, but basically at least 1200 calories a day. I don't know how many calories a day you were eating on Kimkins, but you are going to have to eat more and I don't think there is any way to avoid some weight gain by the scale. Concentrate for now on regaining your health and weight loss will follow. Best South Beach wishes.

Now put it into practice. Have just a few beans to prove to yourself that they are not poison. Sprinkle a tablespoon of chickpeas on top of a salad, for example. Try new vegetables, just a little at a time. Have some low fat dairy. Carbs are good, carbs give you energy, carbs are full of vitamins and minerals. Carbs are not just sugar and white flour and potatoes. Carbs are not evil. Carbs are what you are eating if you are not eating protein and fat. Remember SB is GOOD carbs and GOOD fats. Then move gently to phase 2. You can do it! ![]() |

I'm sorry that you've regained some weight. I really think it's from restoring muscle mass, though it's hard to feel good about any movement in the wrong direction. Please keep plugging away and come back for help if the gaining continues.
