WOE: Atkins
Start Date: Oct. 2005
Newbie to South Beach.....Need some advise...

Hello everyone!!!

I've been on Atkins off and on over 9 years. Just as recently as last year I was down to a size 6!!! I felt really great and wonderful!!! Then I just stopped eating the right foods one day and then it was really hard for me to get back on track! I've gained all my weight back, I feel miserable, I look awful, I have no energy, AND I FEEL LIKE A HEFFER!!! I tried doing phase 1 of Atkins but I just kept gaining weight!!! I was totally dumbfounded. I could not understand WHY I was gaining. I was on this board but on the Atkins forum, and they just kept telling to hang in there that eventually I would lose. GUESS WHAT??? I just kept gaining weight!!! Some say that it's because I turn 40 in August and my body is just changing. Well, I'm not accepting that!! I've been trying to "modify" my diet by eating the supposedly "right foods" like more fruits and veggies and not so much meat, I still stay away from the pasta and rice, but I STILL GAINED WEIGHT!!!! OKAY, so now I'm truly at my wits end. I refuse to buy new clothes and I'm down to only one pair of jeans that I can wear, size 10 AND It's getting too small!!!! I stopped losing my hair and and my nails look wonderful again, so I don't want to do Atkins ANYMORE!!! Please help!!!! I wake up at 4:00 am and from then on I'm on the go until about 10:00pm! Supplements I'm taking are GNC Mega Woman's Multi-vitamin, Glucosamine, and Stress tabs. I've got alot of stress on me right now and that could be the root of my weight gain, however alot of that stress will be eleviated in the next few weeks. Oh, and to top it off my daughter and I go on vacation June 8!!! I know I should wait to start this until AFTER vacation but I can't, if I don't so something now, I will be a PRIZE WINNING HEFFER!!! THAT'S NOT A GOOD THING FOR A FEMALE PERSON!!!!

ANY ALL ADVISE COMMENTS OR TIPS ARE VERY MUCH WELCOMED!!

Ah Paula I can so rlate to your experience. I did Kimkins for a while last summer and lost a lot of weight but also my hair in clumps. Since then I have
gained all the weight back and feel like a heifer to. I am commited to doing SB but instead of starting at phase 1, I tweaked a bit and am doing a phase 1 plus a just a few low GI fruits like berries just to keep myself on track because I cannot get myself back to the strict phase 1 yet. If I lose well on phase 1.5 (I made that one up) then I will stay on that for a while until I don't feel like a heifer anymore.
Best of luck to you, you can do this.

Paula, I should think a visit to your doctor might be in order. It's possible you've got something going on with your thyroid which is causing you to gain weight despite your efforts, or some other issue like Polycystic ovary syndrome. Or, possibly, Atkins screwed up your metabolism and it will just take a while to re-set on South Beach.

Also, size 10 is hardly heiffer territory! Be gentle on yourself, and take good care.

I totally agree with Antonya. Be gentle on yourself. Also would you like to quickly lose weight then gain it back, or would you like to lose weight slowly and keep it off for good? Think about it, its going to take some time, but its worth it when you do it right and the weight is off for good. This is why I came back on the beach, it is the only feasible lifestyle change for me!

FYI. B-complex helps me a lot with stress and managing my sugar levels while on SBD.
