Newbie here having a hard time

Hi, I started SBD 1 1/2 weeks ago and lost 7 pounds the first week sticking strictly to the Phase 1 plan. Problem was, I put myself into ketosis and it didn't agree with me as the ketones made my urine (TMI I know) concentrated even though I was drinking lots of plain water and I had two huge drops in blood sugar which sent me to the doctor (I fainted). Anyway, my doc said skip to Phase 2 immediately.
Problem is: I am not doing as well on P2. I added in fruit and steel cut oatmeal to start but I'm hungry all the time and my cravings are back!
Anyone with similar experiences that maybe has some hints? This is the only way of eating I've ever tried that has cut my cravings (in Phase 1) and I wasn't hungry.
Sorry to such a long rant, but my stomach is growling. And celery and light cream cheese didn't cut it.
thank you for any suggestions or comments

You really shouldn't be in ketosis on phase 1, unless something really went screwy. There are enough carbs in the meal plans to prevent this. Could you post sample menus and we'll see what's happening. Any advice should be based on what you were eating. Hang in there.

In Phase 1 my menu on a typical day:
B- 2 eggs 2 slices of canadian bacon baked in the oven, coffee w/splenda and ff half & half
S- low sodium V8 juice, 1-2 string cheese. almonds or cashews sometimes
L- chicken or shrimp salad on lettuce OR a huge salad with lean meats, ranch, sliced boiled eggs, veggies etc.
S- hummus with raw veggies OR sf jello with light cool whip
D- some kind of meat and veggies
water through out the day plus a cup of regular tea w/splenda.

At first I felt fine and concentrated very hard on not cheating. I have done SBD in the past and cheated here and there and did Atkins a few times too, with not great results as a result of my sneaking a bite of donut or a bowl of cereal here or there. So this time I wanted to really focus on doing it right. After day 3, things started to happen to me (ketosis).

could it be you're not eating enough at each meal/snack?

are you eating any beans? you can substitute 1/3 or 1/2 c serving of beans as part of your veggies each day.

I hope someone can come in and offer your more guidance.

Tina, no I wasn't eating beans. I'm thinking I might need another shot at Phase 1, this time making sure I add in beans etc. I really thought I was doing well, but geez, ketosis wasn't a fun thing for me. I know some people do really well in ketosis and strive to get into it. But it didn't agree with me at all. Anyway, I need to read more sample menus and follow more closely I guess. Cuz my cravings are baaaaaackkkkkk

in addition to beans, you could consider having 2-3 servings of lowfat dairy a day. that's now permissible on phase 1.

oh, yeah, I forgot about dairy. Definatly add some ff plain yogurt or some milk (skim). You can doctor your yogurt up to make it taste better. Add some sf syrups or some natural PB.

Btw, do you all think that regular coffee vs decaf, which is what' recommended for Phase 1 makes a difference? Just wondering as I would have 2-4 cups of regular coffee with fat free half and half and splenda every morning on P1. Maybe that thru my blood sugar off too...

Yes, it does make a big difference. Caffeine hampers blood sugar control and increases insulin resistance. Will absolutely throw your sugar off.

Yikes, ok. Guess I will try Phase 1 again on monday after restocking my cupboards and fridge. Today my cravings have gotten the best of me, I've eaten peanut m'm's and waffles. It's my totm but that is just another excuse. I tried eating just one piece of fruit a day for the last two days with Phase 2 foods. But that hasn't worked.

Lily - I think the caffeine thing is a personal thing.....I drink caffeinated coffee 99% of the time and have never had a problem with it.

Lily, it is a fact that caffeine causes your pancreas to secrete insulin and it can change your blood sugar readings and cause hypoglycemic reactions. It can also cause cravings. You will find this information over and over in LC writings. Some people are more sensitive than others. The fact that you actually fainted leads me to suggest that you try to limit caffeine for a while.

Dr. A explains this briefly in the book and in greater detail in other writings. He explains that a cup or two of coffee a day usually doesn't cause problems for most people, but limit it to that amount. A "coffee cup" of coffee is about 5 oz. and most of us drink out of a mug which is 10-12 oz. If you are drinking 2-4 mugs at a time, then you can almost bet that is wreaking havoc. My thinking is it can't hurt to switch for a while.

I'm in down to two cups a day for the whole day. It must have had something to do with it, nothing else makes sense, having followed Atkins before and gotten into ketosis without problems. But I was a lot younger then too.

What bugs me is that you had blood in your urine. I have never heard ketosis to cause that and I had 3 years experience on Atkins before SB. Did your doctor say that is what caused the blood? No uti? cystitis or infection?

I think the suggestions to get your carbs up and stay out of ketosis (beans, dairy) are excellent and I look forward to hearing your success.

OMG! I totally misread ehat you wrote.

Looking at it now, I have no idea how I confused "huge drops in blood sugar " w/ drops of blood in my urine.

Oh my!

Just goes to show you, one should never post while hungry and without your glasses!
