oh the questions!

I have some questions....

Low carb bread - not great tasting, but are you allowed to have two slices on phase 2? I am still learning as this is my first week on phase 2. If I pair it with lean protein and then maybe a lot of raw spinach ( the packaging says 4 cups raw is the serving size! OMG).

TOM - its supposed to arrive on Thursday. I don't feel bloated like I usually do, in fact I tried on a dress that did not fit last week and it fits perfectly today. I have a weigh in on Thursday too, I was debating if I would not go and then just go next week when TOM is gone. Not sure, but anyway, drinking alot of water would perhaps be keeping me from getting bloated???

chocolate - the book says sparingly. yesterday I had a slice of 15 grain bread with some peanut butter and some shaved dark chocolate on it. I didn't have cravings to go back for the chocolate, so I am thinking that I might be able to have this like once or twice a month and not hurt my progress?

thanks for your replies. I am off to read some more posts.

Hi Janice glad to see ya! I'll try to answer some of your questions if I may.

For your first question about low carb bread. There is no need to eat low carb anything on South Beach. What you look for when buy bread products is whether it's a whole grain product. The word whole grain needs to be the first thing you read in the ingredients. If it says enriched anything instead then that is a no no.

As for TOM yes drinking more water helps with bloating. My TOM is long past but I drink anywhere for 64 - 128 oz of water daily.

You are fine using semi-sweet or dark chocolate daily. That is if you keep your calories with your sweets to 75 calories.

I hope this helps you. Once again it's great having you with us on the Beach!

I love Ezekial bread I am looking forward to being able to add that back in soon. I agree that low carb bread doesn't taste very good. I would rather have no bread then try to eat that stuff

Chocolate chips and cocoa powder are MUST HAVES in my diet! I'll either mix a couple teaspoonsful of powder or a small hand full of chips in plain yogurt, somtimes I'll add slivered almonds too. It makes a nice cruchy chocolately snack or breakfast. I try not to have it daily but there are some weeks when I want chocolate and this is a far better choice than raiding the kid's Easter baskets!
Sandwiches have never been a huge favorite of mine so giving up the bread at home hasn't been an issue at all. Never really ate it so nothing to miss. I did find a "recipe" for a flax seed bread that whips up very easily and cooks in the microwave. The original author says it can be toasted but I think of it as more of a muffin. I'll post the recipe in the sticky today, it may have come from there originally, don't remember. I'll top it with sf strawberry jelly or toss a few chocolate chips in it (see I said they were must haves )
There was a TOM thread in the main lc lobby here (agian I think that's where I saw it, my mind is shot lately ). Generally ladies said that they felt their weight did go up during TOM and then had a whoosh afterward, as long as you don't give in to cravings. Speaking from personal exprience I usually gain anywhere from 3-5 pounds the first few days and then it drops just as quickly as it appeared. I always drink a ton of water and don't "try" to increase during TOM. The only time I make an attempt to drink more is if I've been into salty food.
Just my opinios and experiences on some things hope it helps

Kirsten, I'm with you about the bread. Actually, anything "bready" like crackers, tortillas, or bread itself seems to satisfy me much less per serving than the serving of a hot grain such as couscous, bulgur, rice, or even oatmeal. So this time around, when I'm adding back grains for phase 2, I am going to stay away from the "munchie" type grains and stick with the hot grains. So far I've added a hot grain to my dinner and it hasn't been a problem at all. In fact, it's helping me stay away from that munchie feeling I usually get in the evenings.
