New to South Beach ???'s
Hi,
After going on and off Atkins.. only made it to Day 10 of induction 3 times then three different Weight Watchers memberships, I have decided to give South Beach a try. The thing I like about South Beach is the lower fat items as well as the nuts and beans.. love black eyed peas, chick peas and black beans. I have just ordered the South Beach/GI Ebook. It was $1.49 on Ebay. As far as the beans.. is there a limit? Does this stall anyone? I have good and bad egg days. Right now I am having a bad egg week. I don't want to see eggs. This morning I had black eyed peas sauteed with onions and garlic for Breakfast. I'd like to here about your success and phase I tips on South Beach.. Thanks |

I switched too
Hi Flash, if one thing doesn't work for you, try something else. I stayed on Atkins for a couple of months and did really well, but at this point I wanted some more variety. I love fruit, lots of veggies, and beans. SND has been a slower weight loss for me, but I don't obsess about food nearly as much, especially when I go out, so it's worth it. I do try to select foods with a low GL and that makes a big difference. Basically, I avoid any food that is white or made with white stuff (white flour, sugar, etc.). SBD makes a lot of sense to me, and I'm not eating nearly as much fat. A lot of people do very well with it, so maybe you will too. Good luck! Lynn in NM

A serving of beans is 1/3 - 1/2 cup. As far as I know it doesn't stall anyone. We make red bean salad, add chickpeas to a chef salad, black bean soup, etc. We often have something other than eggs for breakfast. We like eggs at night. If you will follow the book as written, I think you will have great success! ![]() |

Thanks!
Eggs can do turn me off but then I will love them too. I love them for dinner as well. I have to say.. this is the end of my second day and today's menu was: B: Sauteed black eyed peas, tea with milk S: Coleslaw L: Salad with salmon patty S: Sugarfree Jello D: Steak, tomatoe, turnips cooked like homefries and 1/3 of an avacado Lots of water throughout the day! I feel great. I have not had the headaches, dizziness etc. I also understand that this is not a diet but a new way of eating for life. Tomorrow I will add exercise ![]() |

Good morning Flash,
Mikey turned one on March 9th. Happy early birthday to your little one They are so much fun!!! So how are you doing today?I am getting ready to make some more of that quiche - I have been eating a slice of that for a lot of my meals since it's easy to grab and heat and my hubby said he really likes it too. My son is gobbling it up! So, it's time to make more! I got this super good salsa yesterday - it's really thick with lots of veggies and it's crisp and delicious and I put some of that over my quiche slice and thought - I could do this LONG TERM tee hee. I love South Beach. I love having more veggies then I could have before. ![]() |

All is well today.. was working on this project.. I do internet marketing as well as maintain websites... mostly ecommerce sites. any ways.. I was at this point where I couldn't figure out a stock tracking program and just got it.. feels so good to know I can move ahead.
I am on day 4 of Phase 1 and feel absolutely great! Had chickpeas for breakfast and leftover dinner for lunch with SF Jello as a snack. My brother start SB Monday and has dropped 5 lbs .. I have lost 3. I know it's only water weight at this point but I will take it.. a loss is a loss. I love this way of eating and don't feel deprived at all. I love salsa. I usually make my own with avacado and sometimes throw cooked shrimp in there for a ceviche. Have a great day! |

Welcome, Flash!
I'm a vegetarian so I eat beans quite a bit for protein and it hasn't stalled me at all so far. I do try to keep to the portions per meal, though, so I usually don't eat more than 1/2 cup at a meal. The biggest tip I can really give for Phase 1 is EAT A LOT OF VEGGIES . Seriously, I found putting a lot of veggies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (a lot meaning at least 3 cups, though less in the morning) really helped round out my meals and keep me feeling energetic. You'll do great! Tam |

Flash good job on getting that done at work. Your job sounds fun and it sounds like you really enjoy it. Good for you for figuring it out. I just LOVE when something stumps me and then I have an "a ha!" moment!
I need to make some sugar free jello today - I have tons of boxes of it in the pantry and will do that so I can have that as a snack. I am getting ready to do house cleaning. I am so irritated too - some ants decided to come through our front door trim. I killed a bunch of them yesterday thankfully they are for the most part staying in the entry way area - and my hubby stopped in the hardware store yesterday and got some ant poison and sprinkled the little balls all over the yard/cracks etc. We have little ant traps too so I am going to put those out - looks like my little guy will have to stay in the other part of the house until this is resolved. I have all of his toys now and playpen and horsey rider etc in the family room so he will be well entertained. I hope this poison stuff works or I will have to call the bug man and have them spray. OH JOY! Also, that is awesome about your brother losing weight too! It's such an awesome way to eat. I just feel really good about my choices and feel this really is going to be a way of life for our family. GOOD JOB on the 3 pounds!!!! Before you know it you will be at goal!!!!salsa with shrimp is awesome. I like shrimp, white onion, tomato, cilantro, fresh crisp jalapeno, and a splash of clam juice- I think it's called clammoto or something -can't remember but that spelling doesn't look right! ha ha. but it's super good - I like that in the summer when it's just too hot to cook originally it was eaten on white corn chips but can't do that anymore so I will have to be creative. Keep up the good work!!!! ![]() |

Tam - good to know this! I really think I am going to add beans in soon. I have been having cravings for those crock pot recipes that I saw on the SB menu ideas and recipes. Have you made these recipes (the chili ones) - how should I usually portion it out? Like would you say have no more then one cup of chili for a portion? I don't want to have a bigger portion then I should. I am really trying to work on those portion modifications and so far it's working pretty well. Your stats look great! ![]() |

Hi Tam,
So beans are okay, so can you have a 1/2 cup with every meal? I have always loved beans but used to have them with white rice. When I hit Phase II I will have beans with brown rice but right now I don't miss the rice at all. I am not a vegetarian but I do love soy products. Thanks for the info. |

Hi Moni,
Oh no! about the ants. That happens to me here at the beginning of summer. I don't know how the ants get into the house but they do. It's not like there's any syrup around. LOL I too want to try those crockpot recipes with beans. I really want to get a crockpot. My husband thinks it will be another thing that ends up in the basement. How often do you use yours? |

We use the crock pot at least once every two weeks but anticipate using it more for making these chili recipes. We have made lots of stews and adobo chicken and pulled pork etc. in there and have done chili a couple of times. I used to make sweet and sour meatballs in there but that won't be happening either ha ha. Man, those were good! Also made lots of turkey meatballs in there too but there was gravy in there with the turkey meatballs so I don't think I will be doing those anymore either since I can't have gravy
I think it really depends on what kind of recipes you want to make. Remember that South Beach is a bit more vegetable friendly so you can make lots of vegetable beef, vegetable chicken soups and chilis and the shredded pork and shredded chicken - someone on here makes a lot of beef roast with pepperoncini's simmered all day - I bet that is really tasty. I remember her posting a couple times and my mouth was watering. I LOVE pepperoncini and keep them always in the fridge but try to limit them due to sodium. OH AND BE SURE TO GET THOSE CROCK POT LINERS (they sell those like at Target and other grocery stores too) so you don't have to scrub the pot for four days! Do you have a wok??? I have a wok and LOVE IT - we do lots of stir fry entrees for dinner and if you didn't have a WOK I might even chose that over a crock pot I love how fast the meat cooks and the veggies cook so perfect everytime. So either way you get awesome one dish cooking. I hate messing up a bunch of dishes when everything can just go in one! Let me know if you decide to get one. We could test out some recipes and give each other heads up on what was good etc. ![]() |

Good morning all and starting tomorrow! I am excited after reading your posts, especially the home made salsa one Mikeysmommy, can you please post your recipe? I've been on and off Atkins for about two years, WW, and calorie counting but carbs and me just don't get along
I always end up bingeing and eating way more than the allowed amount, so never lost any weight. I know low carb is the best way for me and I'm ready to commit to SB renee |

Hi Renee,
Same here... WW worked for a while but I couldn't keep counting everything and then how can you have one cookie without eating the entire box? Atkins was way too restrictive for me and I couldn't get past induction... I am on day seven of Phase I of SB and feel great ... I am sure I can do this. FF |

Day 3 on phase 1 and things are going great so far! I threw out any junky or trigger foods in my house and armed my kitchen with sf fudgicles, sf jello cups, low fat cheeses, turkey bacon (which i've discovered is sooo good if you cook it extra long) and cut up fresh veggies and have those with ranch dressing. I made LindaSues Chicken Mushroom Sausage casserole and a veggie and ham quiche to have on hand to heat up also. So far so good...

Hi Wrenay,
Sounds like you are doing great! I am on day 10 and have forgotten that I am even on a diet because I am NOT. I am learning to eat for the rest of my life. Having my tea and then will decide what's for breakfast. Anyone here ever have that Spanish Cheese that's made for frying? Got some yesterday.. low in fat, zero carbs and you slice it and toast it in non stick pan.. it does not melt.. just gets chewy.. great source of protein when you don't want eggs. Have a great day all.. have a bleeding essay to hand in at 12:50 that I am working on. FF |

I have not tried that fried cheese - that sounds delicious with salsa - I LOVE salsa! Renee I was doing Atkins before I started South Beach and wasn't really losing weight very well - I think it was the full fat cheese, cream cheese, cream stuff that was not allowing me to lose and I wanted more veggies so when I started South Beach I did the induction for South Beach (two weeks) and then switched to Phase 2. I am taking it really slow. I don't want to add too much back too soon. I think some days will look more like phase 1 etc. it's a good thing because I will just eat how I am feeling that day. If I want to have grain then I can, and fruit if I want etc. or if I want to have more of a phase 1 day I can too. I love the flexibility. I just know that I will have to look at bread (even the sprouted no flour kind) with less enthusiasm as before!

Hi Moni, I love black beans.. and I love Trader Joes. Your dinner sounds fab. I am going to move into Phase II on Monday. I also plan on taking it very slow as far as adding carbs back. I really want to feel things out and see how my body reacts. Though I must admit.. I am looking forward to a slice of bread.. actually I was thinking I can get a sandwich from my school cafeteria made on whole grain bread and just eat half and save half for lunch the next day. I love the deli there and miss it. |
