What type of results compared to Atkins????
O.K. guess this an old question, but, I was wondering anyway.... What rate of weightloss does a person have compared to the weightloss on Atkins??? I know, we all want FAST weightloss and we should be happy with..... yah, I already know that line, but I really am wondering if there is much difference in the long haul??? So those of you how use the South Beach Plan, would you let me (or us) know what your rate of weightloss is...... was thinking about it but am unsure what the added carbs would do to the rate of weightloss.
Sure hope I did not make this a confusing question..... "I" know what I am trying to say. Thanks Vicki Asking because my new endocrinoligist recommended South Beach to me today.

My rate of loss was similar with both plans. I started off on Atkins and the weight flew off at first, so I'm not counting that. I weighed 238, so it does that...With both plans, you have to get to a point where you have to watch portion size. If I'm doing either well, I lose pretty much the same. I typically can lose about 1.5 pounds/week on both, but that is also counting calories because I have a problem with portion control (even with the appetite suppressing ketosis).
I like the plan. It has a lot of the benefits of Atkins (regulating blood sugar, etc) but it's much easier for me to stay on plan because it's not as restrictive. |

I know that when I did Atkins (did it for about a month last year) I lost faster, but not a significant amount faster. The reason I switched to South Beach is because I like the focus on a "healthy" lifestyle; it's less about counting carbs, and more about eating the RIGHT carbs. I found the diet to be alot more lenient in some ways, and it just makes me *feel* better than Atkins did (I felt deprived on Atkins). I really think it's a personal preference.
Hope this helps!I'm happier "on the Beach"!

I went to South Beach because I was on Atkins for two months without losing hardly anything, then I started to gain on it. I am a slow loser anyway, so guess I don't count; started atkins on Sept 10..went to Sb Oct.23. Total loss is 13 pounds. Not counting the tenths....

I lost quickly in the Induction phase of Atkins AND in Phase 1 of SB. The difference for me is that on Atkins I didn't lose after induction, on South Beach, I am continuing to lose slowly. 1/2 to 2 lbs a week seems to be my rate. I have even had a week where I gained.
All that being said, I am able to eat fruit & grains, those healthy Good carbs, and for me, that makes all the difference. Once on to Phase 2, the plan is easy to follow and I can eat out almost anywhere. I agree with Anj, portion control for me is the key! After decades of eating like a lumberjack, it is taking more self control than I knew I had! The benefit is that by now, I can actually see myself at goal! Never got to this point before. BTW, I am a type II diabetic who is having virtually normal fasting blood sugar counts since I started SB. Try it! I think you'll be happy you did!

I wanted to chime in too about portion control. When I was at my heaviest I lost weight very steady with SBD. I lost over 20 pounds my first month and between 1-2 pounds each week for about a year. At some point in that year I started taking the best of SBD (whole grains) and Atkins (high fat) and continued to lose. Then after that year nothing. It was only when I did Oprah's boot camp and Body for Life for Women that I lost more weight. I realized with both those programs I had started to watch my portions. With BFL I even watch my calories. At first I thought it would be a pain but I'm just careful with what I eat and try not to go over 1800 calories per day. It's not that hard to keep track and it was worth it to me to see the scale moving again.
I'm up 4 pounds over my siggie weight and know it's partly because I stopped counting calories and started eating huge portions again. I see my weight coming down (down 2 pounds from where I was this time last week) by again watching my portions. I would say, on average, you can lose pretty much the same weight with either plan but your body will get to a point, when you start to get close to your goal, that you might have to start watching those calories. One of the big reasons I switched to BFL for Women is the emphasis on the emotional aspect of losing weight and the physical aspect with lots of exercise (cardio and weight lifting). With SBD you really don't have to work out but I have found that I have to, especially if I want to see goal and not have so much sagging skin.

Vicki,
There is a body for life board on LCF that lurked on for a while and I was so intimidated by the program reading that board that I decided not to do it. I happened to stumble across the book for women and it really spoke to me. The program for women is gentler and kinder to me than the regular program. The doctor that wrote the book for women Dr. Peeke really seems to know her stuff and she breaks the program down into three components, what you eat (mouth), what you do (muscle) and what you think or feel (mind). This just really seems to be what I need at this point in my weight loss journey. I got the book from the library before I made the investment to purchase my own copy and I'm glad I did. Let me know if you want or need more details about the program. The eating plan is similar to SBD so that's a good thing. I think my body responds best to limiting or should I say eliminating refined flour and sugar. The doctor recommends you not eat whole grains at dinnertime but have them during the ealier parts of the day. I'm struggling with that part but I've got the exercise part of the program down pretty well. I love my work outs! I'm trying to get a handle on the mental aspect. Believe it or not, that's the hardest - at least for me! |
