Question about South Beach books

I plan on trying to get back on track around the first of Dec. I have been off plan for months and am miserable and have gained weight to the point that I am now heavier than I've ever been in my life (it hurts to even say it). I have had some bad things going on in my life recently but eating junk all day is not going to help anybody. I recently lost my beloved Mother-in-law to lung cancer three weeks after she was diagnosed. She never smoked a day in her life, always ate healthy and exercised daily. Makes me wonder if any of it is worth it but when I have trouble getting up and down and just moving around because I am so obese I know it is.

My question is about buying the books. I have read the South Beach diet book but I didn't buy it. Do you think I should buy it even though I can get the food lists from here? Also, what are your opinions about the cookbooks, I think I will buy the Quick and Easy one but what about the first one? I read on Amazon that the recipes were difficult and expensive in the first cookbook. I did buy the Good Fats Guide (I can't remember the exact name but it is a small handbook with items listed as good, limited or avoid).

Also on Amazon were two cookbooks by Stephanie Karpinske, one for recipes for Phase One and the other was Phase Two recipes. Does anybody have these and do you recommend them?

Are there any other helpful books out there. I'm kind of a fanatic about guide books and recipe books when I'm on a diet, I feel like I need them all when I probably get more from this website than I do from them.

Thanks for any advice.

Pam

Your local library should have copies of the SB cookbooks and other low carb books. The are quite a few diet plans dealing with low carb or low glycemic index ways of eating and almost all have a section of recipes. Go browse before you buy.

In my opinion, there is nothing difficult or expensive about the recipes in the book. In fact, we have been making a lot of the same kinds of recipes for years already-- without a cookbook.

I just wanted to say welcome Pat as I have been where you are today back in 03. My mother died from colon cancer and we were thrown for a loop. It was so unexpected. I had just started my South Beach Diet at the time and had lost close to 50 pounds when all this happened. I know now my mother's desease brought me to a reality check and eating this way has taken me from a diabetes 2 sufferer and very high blood pressure to a person with a new lease on life with optimum health. You can do this too I know and feel the benefits right away.

I bought the books and cookbooks to have as a guide in the beginning. I found the menus helpful to give me structure. Now I just stick with the right foods on the list and do my menus from what I have on hand. This way has become a way of life plan for me. I still have a bunch to loss as I'm half way through the amount I need to lose but I know I'll get there and right now I have my energy back and that "feel good" feeling of Ain't Life Grand!

Take Care of yourself Pat and know that we look forward to having you with us. The beach is a lovely place to hang out.

I bought the Quick and Easy cookbook from Sam's Club today for 17.00. It looks very user friendly. I'm going to check out the other two books from the library. I gave my copies away unfortunately.

Thanks for the advice and words of encouragement. I have used the local library's copy of the South Beach diet so I don't think I will buy that one. I think I will get the Quick and Easy Cookbook since I have read good reviews of it. I may borrow the first SB Cookbook to check it out and see if I would use it very much if my library has it, my local library is kind of small.

I plan on starting back on 11/28. I will try and not be too bad until then but I haven't gotten organized yet and I know I will fail if I don't. I am starting to cut back already and even if I overeat on Thanksgiving I plan on taking a long walk afterward.

Thanks again,
Pam

Pam--Don't forget the internet as a resource, also. There are a bazillion sites with low carb recipes.

Be sure to check the stickies at the top of the page for lots of ideas.

Another source for really good recipes are the Suzanne Somers' books!

Hi Pam &

I just wanted to "chime in" if a little late...

I find my South Beach diet book and "Good Fats, Good Carbs Guide" to be very necessary to keep me on track!

I refer to the diet book often, especially when I am having a tough day. And I never go shopping without my good fats, good carbs book! I have asked for the cookbooks for Christmas. Since I am committed to this lifestyle, I find that constantly feeding my brain with the right info has made a huge difference! It is becoming second nature to me and that makes it so much easier!

Best of success on your journey with us!!

The new gold-coloured SB Quick and Easy cookbook is great! It has some super-yummy recipes that are restaurant quality. It's a great when you're getting bored with your menus.

I couldn't resist, I stopped and bought that cookbook on the way to work today. Now I'll probably spend the day goofing off and checking out the recipes inside.
