WOE: Atkins---GO PATRIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many of you followed the sample menus when starting?

I am still in the very beginning of South Beach, moving from Atkins. I am very familiar with Atkins, but still feel like I don't know enough about SBD to do it well. I feel like I am not doing what I should be. I tried to follow menus but strayed a bit here and there.

What did all of you do? I went through a couple weeks of doing my own dieting in which I ate sugar free nonfat yogurt sweetened with splenda and lots of veggies, some fruits, and lean protein.

I am sure the sugar free nonfat yogurt isn't allowed in Phase I, but do you think it will slow loss? I haven't really had any loss since starting on Monday...

What are your suggestions for Phase I (mainly breakfast and dinner)?

Thanks!

Just a warning... I'm no help... but I'm in the same boat. My main problem is I haven't been to the grocery store since starting, so I'm just in avoidance mode right now. I too did Atkins in previous years (with great success) but I feel that SBD will be something my family and I can live with long term.

I'm so used to the high-fat foods of Atkins, that I'm finding it hard to make breakfast foods that are appetizing. I just don't have time before heading to work in the a.m. to fix eggs or whatever... and doing it the night before is going to be something i'll have to work on, because my daughter is very clingy after I get home from work! Lunch is the easiest because I just have a grilled chicken salad. But again, I have to get used to ordering with FF cheese and balsamic vinegrette.

I'm dedicated this time around... and whatever I have to do, I'm going to make this work.

So anyone that can help (or post) some Phase I breakfast option, that would be GREAT!!!

Hi nessyrae!

South Beach is a great choice! I switched from Atkins too, and have lost 30 lbs since Sept. 3!

I did follow the sample menus plan in the Phase 1 food list "sticky" on this board (there is also an update to the list in a "sticky"), and made food choices/menus that suited my tastes. Have you read that yet? If not, my suggestion is you do so. It will be very helpful.

The good news is that sugar free non-fat yogurt is a Phase 1 food, and Splenda is also allowed. The not-so-good news is that fruit is not a Phase 1 food. (That may be why your weight loss isn't happening.) You can start adding fruit back in during Phase 2.

Are you planning to do Phase 1 or jump right into Phase 2? I would highly recommend that you start with a clean Phase 1. It will prepare your body to better handle the addition of fruits and good carbs which you haven't had on Atkins. And, you'll need to add back those things slowly.

Best of luck! You CAN do this and you will be very happy you did!

Mel: Here are a couple of suggestions for breakfast.

-Make egg salad the night before and have it with some salad veggies or rolled in lettuce leaves. I fry or nuke a couple slices of turkey bacon, chop it & add to the egg salad. You can actually make two or 3 day's worth at a time.
-Turkey roll-ups are good and can be made the night before.
-Soup. Make a pot of chicken or turkey vegetable soup. Use canned LF or FF broth, skinless chicken or turkey breast and lots of chopped veggies.
-"Plan-overs" from dinner the night before. Sounds strange but who says you have to eat "breakfast-type food"? And if you cook a little extra, there's a ready-made breakfast!

HTH! Chris

nessyrae!

When I first started SBD, I didn't go exactly by the sample menus in the book but used them a guide learning program.

You've been given some good info, there's lots of good support here, these guys are great!

I didn't follow the same meals either. I mostly went from the allowable foods list and DH and I ate very plainly and pretty much the same things for the first two weeks.

Breakfasts we had a couple of eggs scrambled with lean breakfast meat and hot tea with splenda.

Snacks were 15 almonds, a cheese stick or a slice of lean deli meat with 1/2 slice of low fat cheese rolled up and microwaved

Lunch was a tomato stuffed with tuna salad or a grilled sirloin burger and salad

Dinner was lean meat with veggie or a grilled chicken salad

Dessert was always a no sugar added fudgesicle

I lost 14 pounds the first two weeks eating this way. I wish you well on Phase 1!

Hi
I am also very new to SB. I am following the plan from the sticky, but have to improvise till I can go shopping also. I have no desserts, but I do have hb egg for my snack, or a stalk of celery. I will also do what I have to to get this weight off. I aslo have pumpkin seeds, and sunflower in the shell. I have had my ff milk, and seeds two days in a row for my snack, and I am still losing...YESSSSSSSSssssssssssss ( the amount on plan, I am not going over or will not cheat.)

It's funny because I never knew how restrictive Atkins was until I started Beach'ing.

I guess the biggest one for me is being able to have TOMATOES!!! I absolutely love them and being able to have salsa on things and just the tomato/cheese combo will go miles for me! Same with the beans!!! Who would have thought those two things would get me excited!!!

I'm going to try and make breakfast for tomorrow, but it may not be convential... I have to see what's in the freezer and see if I can make it work. (I'm taking my daughter this evening for her 1st haircut... so I won't be making it to the store - again!!! Good thing I'm not out of TP, I guess!!!
