Alternatives to Meat?
I'm wanting to start up SB again after doing well on it in the US. We now live in Australia and the prices of meat are ridiculous. We live on a tight budget and so I'm not going to be able to buy meat often. Even cans of tuna are $5 so although canned meat is cheaper, it's not possible to eat heaps of it.
Anyway, I know we can eat eggs and cheese. Is there a limit on the number of eggs or can you literally eat 80eggs/day? Is it possible to do SB without heaps of meat and not be hungry? I'd love to hear any suggestions you all have. I don't want to make excuses but money really is tight. I'd love to hear how to make this work. Thanks Beth

YIKES! We're vegetarians, so our meals are based on "no meat". TVP is very edible, cooked in a sauce. You can make a really good sloppy joe , chili, or spaghetti sauce with it. How costly is tofu? We use it often. Are veggie burgers, etc. more reasonably priced? Quiche type dishes are good and you can add a good amount of veggies and make a one dish meal. We eat salads topped with various beans and cheeses. What about dairy products? Can you make good use of yogurt, cottage cheese, etc? Find a good vegetarian cookbook and tweak the recipes. The carb count of a meatless diet will almost always be higher and weight loss will probably be slower, but if you watch portion sizes and plan well, you can be successful. Good Luck!

Thanks ladies. Of course I didn't literally mean 80 eggs a day, I was just really asking if they were truly unlimited.
I never thought about people doing lo carb veg. I guess I had a narrow-minded view. I will give it a go then. I'm dying to get back on but dh is worried we won't be able to keep up with the cost of it in the long run. Thanks again! Beth |

I knew you were kidding about the eggs. I have a SBD vegetarian plan somewhere, want me to look it up? I could probably get it out to you tomorrow if that would help. What about a budget roast or chicken, that could last several meals say at 4 oz serving sizes. Good luck! |

Hi!
I am not a veg, but I eat many non-meat proteins. Here are some ideas: Organic tofu (works well in many variations) Nuts and nut butters. YUM!!! I eat natural peanut or almond butter every day! They are also high in fat, so they are limited. Eggs and egg whites (to lower calorie and fat, combine whole eggs with egg whites instead of using all whole eggs) Beans (cooked beans are a little higher in carbs, so be sure to portion. They are an excellent source of fiber and protein and a staple on SBD. Soy products such as edamame, tempeh etc. Also SBD allows veggie burgers. Cheese (reduced fat) has a good amount of protein, but keep an eye on the fat and carbs. I use it a lot. Chicken and fish can sometimes be less expensive and make a special meal. Use more veggies and make the proteins go a long way!

Thanks SO much, I really appreciate it. I'm going to go look at it now! We plan to go over the plan this weekend, make our eating plan for the next few weeks and then go grocery shopping to get what we need. I'm excited to get started and am excited to find such a wonderful group!
