I eat the steel cut oats too. I make it in the crock pot and let it go all night long. I also add some fruit to it. Regular oats, noway.

Heh, I do 3/4 cup (dry) with a scoop of protein powder. But I'm a BFL'er and in maintenance so I can get away with it. :P Oh, and that's twice a day no less! I do love my oats..

what about

plain old quaker old fashioned oat meal or malto meal? Does it have to be steel cut oats to be good for you? I heard about that on Oprah today plus this forum. I've never had it. Does it taste ANYTHING like regular oatmeal cuz I LOVE oatmeal and prob wouldn't like it if it doesn't resemble that flavor at all.....I'm so scared of trying new things sometimes....afraid I won't like it as good as what I'm used to and it'll be like torture eating something good for me. So far so good. I love reading your posts being a newbie. I did Atkins for like 3 months but I'm trying SBD now. I lost 30lbs on Atkins went back on the carbs after a near death experience. I was so glad to be alive I was like I NEED ICE CREAM.... Now my 30lbs is back....grrrr my own fault. So here we go again.

Welcome Shanlee, glad you're okay, the weight will come off again, it is for me.

I saw the show, it was eye-opening wasn't it.

I wish we had a food swap here, I'd give you my bag of steel cut oats . I don't like the texture nearly as good as old fashioned ones...they are 2nd best, just don't eat the instant kind.

Glad you posted and welcome to the board! Hope you'll join in with us!

OH THANK GOD I can deal with second best girl....I'm so glad you answered. I can do without the instant fine as long as I can have the old fashioned. I would just hate to be able to have neither....LOL....thank you SO much for letting me know that!!!!! Whew...what a relief. I guess that was a no on the malto meal plain? Darn I LOVE the texture and taste of that......cinnamon is ok isn't it? To add to oatmeal? I just add cinnamon, butter and splenda. Not too much of any and just a dribble of smuckers sugar free syrup OMG its the best breakfast ever and keeps me full even longer than eggs which is pretty darn good....

I have 1/4 cup dry steel cut oats which makes a pretty big bowl and I have that with a protein shake in the morning. I really like the steel cut oats. I was hesitant at first since I love regular oatmeal but I don't miss Quaker anymore. I love steel cut oats.

I never liked regular oatmeal...the texture didn't appeal to me, that's what I love about steel cut oats. I never knew they were "better," I just like them better. Good to know, though, that traditional oats are good, too, because that's what my kids prefer.

I love steel cut oats. I toast 1 cup of dry oats in the oven for 20 mins. on 300, the boil in 4 cups water for about 20 mins. Mix with splenda, cinnamon and SF vanilla syrup. This is one of my favorite foods in the whole world!

BTW, 1 cup dry makes about 5 servings. Each cooked serving measures about 3/4 cup. I put them into individual containers in the fridge and re-heat in the microwave.

Thanks Marva!

Reg - if the individual bags of oatmeal is instant oatmeal you really shouldn't eat that. It's highly processed and that makes it absorb more quickly into your bloodstream, so it could cause blood sugar to spike and over production of insulin. If you don't want to fool with steel cut oats then old fashioned oats are fine. They cook up in the microwave in about 2 mins.

Shanlee, I don't think malto meal is a good choice.

This is a little info I found.

Farina or Germade: Flour or meal (of grain or starchy roots.) Also sold as *Cream of Wheat, farina is made from the endosperm of the grain, which is milled to a fine granular consistency and then sifted. Farina is most often served as a breakfast cereal, but can also be cooked like polenta. Its name comes from the Latin word for meal or flour, which in turn traces to far, the Latin name for spelt, a type of wheat. Farina was the first genuine flour before milling stones.

Malting is a process of bringing grain to the point of its highest possible starch content by allowing it to begin to sprout roots and take the first step to becoming a photosynthesizing plant.

At the point when the maximum starch content is reached, the seed growth is stopped by heating the grain to a temperature that stops growth but allows an important natural enzyme diastase to remain active. Barley, once "malted" is very high in the type of starches that an enzyme called diastase (found naturally on the surface of the grain, just under the husk) can convert starch quite easily into the disaccharide called Maltose.
***********

About which program one loses best one, SBD or old Atkins, it depends on the person and their lifestyle..and how dilligent we are at making either work. It's really a toss up, either one can be a success, both can be unsuccessful, we just have to go with what works for us individually. Both have inductions.....SBD was never about cutting out the fats, just about eating good fats, cutting out the sat and trans fat. Atkins was never meant to be no carbs. Both are about adding carbs in slowly until we reach our own personal place of weight loss/goal and satisfaction. JMO

Good luck to all of us!
