new to sbd, thanks and are you up for a few questions?
Hi---great board. I did Atkins a couple years ago and the AtkinsFriends board was a great help to me. Now, due to some health issues involving steroid treatments and inactivity, I'm way up in weight (142 when I want to be 125, not a huge amount, but the desire for weight loss is valid at any stage of overweight, I think). Hubby and I switched from Atkins mainainence to induction. In 8 weeks he dropped 20 , I dropped 0. Sooooo, I figured it was time to give SBD a try.
I had a good first day on SBD yesterday and dropped 2 pounds---I'm sure a lot of it is "water" due to the steroids and the Atkins frustration cheats, but I'll take the win lol. Ok, if you're still with me, it is question time: 1)I'm not a snacker. I've been making myself snack, choosing 4 oz V8 and a handful of celery OR a small serving of cottage cheese--about 3 tablespoons. Is that enough? 2)my schedule is wiggy, so I never get around to dinner until about 7:30. I go to bed around 9---do you think i will run into trouble eating dinner that close to bedtime? I plan to eat breakfast at 7, snack at 10, lunch at 1230, snack at 3, snack at 530, dinner at 730 3)I have problems with calcium absorbtion and I really really need to keep my calcium levels up. How bad would it be to have 3-4 servings of lowfat or nonfat dairy per day every day? (skim milk is a favorite of mine). I take heavy doses of calcium supplements and choose stuff like chard, sardines, and shellfish for the calcium boost, too. 4)ummmm is sugar free metamucil ok? <blush> 5)Do you think I will do ok on SBD if my ability to exercise is extremely limited? I can (and do) walk about 1/4 to 1/2 mile a day at a good pace unless my back is completely out. Thanks a bunch, and happy beaching! emel |

okay here is a shot at your questions 1) yes, you are not required to snack if you are not hungry...just make sure you are getting enough calories in for the day (i found that with all of the lean protein and veggies at 1st my calories could be too low, i plugged my food into fitday and got my totals) 2)i think dinner that late would be okay...my schedule is very erratic too. i would just make sure that you have that you do have an afternoon snack seeing as you have 7 hrs between lunch and dinner....i tried to eat every 3-4 hrs during the 1st 2 weeks of SB(either meal or snack) 3)i think the book says 2 servings of dairy (milk, ff plain yogurt) but remember you can also have ff/lf cheese 4) i dont have that problem , but yes i would think that would be fine...not taking it could be much worse 5)yes...but as you get closer to your goal weight i would think it may take longer with not being able to exercise and i think after your beginning loss that you weight loss will be slow due to you only wanting to lose 20lbs just my thoughts and opinions.... hope this helps ![]()

Emel! Congrats on the 2 lbs, that's great and I know you were glad to see the scales move. Dana has done such an awesome job answering all your questions, I think she's right on target. I don't really consider that everything is "written in stone", everyone has to work their own program and no two will be the same. Lean, low fat/no sat fats, portion control, no sugar, no refined whites, and aiming for low glycemic choices is what seems key to making the program work. I don't eat if I'm not hungry, be that a snack or whatever and I don't eat things I don't like just because. I also take fiber capsules prior to the lunch and dinner meals, he encourages that. I don't even remember that he talks about heavy duty exercise, I can't do what some of the younger girls do, I just do what I'm able to do and not risk hurting myself. Take care of yourself and enjoy the SBD with us, glad you're joining in! We'd like for you to join in with us on the check in thread and menu also! This is the most awesome support group and I hope you feel you questions have been answered. You sound like a real trouper. ![]() Marva |

Thanks for the great answers, ana and marva, and ty for the nice welcome, Renee! I had been confused, I thought that the ff/lf cheese was to be included in the dairy limitations (like if you had cheese with lunch you had to count it as a dairy portion)
I'll go back to sipping my virgin mary (V8 with about a pound of celery lol) and lurk on the check in thread. Thanks again... |
