Why did I gain?
I really really wanted to do South beach but I gained 5 pounds in a week it took me another week of strict atkins to get that weight back off. What made me gain? Is this a common thing coming off of atkins to gain?
Also another question , what yogurt out there was fat free and sugar free? I looked at dannon but even dannon had 12 sugar |

I ate green salads with cucumber and tomatoes. Lean meat. Lite italian dressing with it . cottage cheese , small amount of beans with with homemade whole wheat tortilla. Tuna w/ mayo ( light on the mayo though) and whole wheat bread toasted ( 1 slice recipe from the book ) sugar free jello. i know i had 1 small peach
this is just to kind of give you an idea of the kinds of things i was eating . I never kept a fitday journal like i normally do w atkins . |

I would venture to say the 5 lb gain and loss wasn't fat but rather fluid gain and loss.
If you still want to try SBD, now that you're back to square one with Atkins, look over the food list in SBD P1, if there are any food items in there that are more carby than what you've been eating, start with some of those and gradually work up the ladder, with more veggies then on to one whole grain or fruit at a time. Most start off with their own 1.5 verson until everything levels out. I haven't ever done Atkins correctly, just a few weeks of Atkins 72 at a time so I'm no authority on the switching of plans but it does seem to be really similar, we just don't count carbs per se. The food lists by phase are at the top of the forum, good luck! |

I agree with Marva. She's a pro at SB and knows what she's talking about. I too would stay away from the whole grains for a little bit and maybe try sticking with the beans/legumes and a low gi fruit each day and see how your body reacts. It'll take some time for the water to level off. Carbs are the only thing that stores water. Protein and fats can't so when you add in more carbs you'll gain some water weight back. I would stick with one plan though and not do SB and gain water and then switch to Atkins to lose the water. You'll just end up driving yourself crazy and not really get anywhere.

so basically though if I stick with SB i will probably gain a bit but it will level off after a bit? I quit cause i was soo scared to gain . as you know it's hard work to lose 5 pounds. But water weight is better than fat

Try keeping a journal or fitday, I think that will help you and also there's just no better thing to do than read read read the book and the updates, learn what you need to tweak just for you. I learn something everytime I do.
There's lots of good support here too! |

Yeah, you put back on the water weight that Atkins takes off... which is okay because you want the fat off, not the water.
You should level off at around the 3-5 lb mark. At least that is most comon. |

I am glad you found some answers, I like your menu actually....but the whole wheat might not be the real whole wheat type stuff. The stuff in most grocery stores is crap to be honest....

I made the bread myself actually with the recipe in the book . I was concerned using that recipe as a matter of fact because it had no real sugar in it and i wondered if it would have actually fed the yeast. And i didn't have any vital gluten flour but it rised just fine on it own. I used King arthurs white wheat. which is 100% whole wheat stone ground. It seems to be a lot "lighter" in flavor and texture than the other types of wheat .

I thought your menu looked good too Leigh since you were eating in P2, you'll find your balance of carbs by trial and error.
You're a natural for SBD if you're baking your own SBD bread Quote:

Thanks marvi
I really do want to do this diet. It much more in line with how i feel we ( my family) should be eating. And your right eventhough i read the book i think i should re read it ...i know i didn't get the info from it that i should have . As far as sweetners go . I think i read somewhere that it was ok to use honey and molasses sparingly which would make the bread taste better even if only added a Tablespoon ( moreso with molasses) . What do you guys think about that ? You think occassionly it would be ok ?

Leigh! If you have the original book, be sure and check out the updates thread at the top of the forum index, there's more goodies to add in. Honey, etc is listed as VL or a food to avoid or eat rarely. All the breads I've bought have a small amount of sugar and jmo, I think it's okay to add a T to a bread recipe, that's a very small amount given the volume of the recipe. Good luck, we're all in this together, like forever. ![]() |
