Questions - Atkins to SB

I have been doing Aktins for a while now and also Meat/Egg. I am thinking of switching because I am becoming bored and would like more food choices. Do I need to start with phase 1 or go into phase 2? Are you still in ketosis while doing SB? Will I have water gain from switching? Another thing that I heard about SB is that you really lose in the hip and stomach areas. Anyone know if this is true or anyone that has done both ways of eating find this to be true? Sorry that I have so many questions but I dont know a lot about South Beach.

i did not do atkins but i have seen quite a few people switching from atkins to sb for maintainance.
some people do phase one after atkins, but some do a stricter version of phase 2 (phase 1.5 ) because they already have the sugar cravings beat
i have been doing south beach for over a month..lost 14lbs and i can tell i have lost in my stomach and hips
hope this helps.... i am sure someone with atkins to sb experience will put their personal experience in for you

Thanks Anadday.

I also heard that you can have a cheat day on SB. Is that true or was that from someone that wasnt following it correctly?

i dont think you can have a "cheat day", but it is designed that if you have a period when you dont eat as well as you should that you can just go back to phase one. it is designed that if you "make a mistake" with your eating, you can eat really clean(phase1) and get back on track.
i have been good and have not had to do that yet, so i dont know how it affects your weight loss.

Hi Sandy, I am new here, just switching over to SB from atkins. I have been slowly switching over and have noticed I am in and out of ketosis as I go. There has been a little water gain for me, but not so much it's bothersome or anything. There are some cravings kicking in, so I am trying to regulate how fast I add carbs back in...easy does it for me. I will say I'm feeling good and happy about the prospect of a little oatmeal for breakfast eventually!

Thanks for the replies. I have done a lot of research as much as possible and will hopefully be getting the SB book today. I am already finding it hard when I look at the nutrition on the back of labels when I see the carb count. I guess that is something I will have to deal with. I havent started yet. I am adding more vegetables in so that hopefully when I start I wont have the weight gain. I have kept my carb count very low so maybe this will help. I do still have so many questions such as when I buy things I will have to buy it either low fat or fat free. Right?. The book should help with these questions and I do look forward to starting this. Everyone have a safe and great 4th of July.

I'm stalling on South Beach after having lost a total of 23 pounds (this is INCLUDING a 5 pound bresat reduction). Can't wait to get back to exercising on my cross country trainer, but plastic surgeon says I am not allowed yet.
I also went from Atkins to South Beach because I was bored with food choices. I wanted to eat low carb wheat bread, and occasionally fruit too. But now my weight isn't moving. I used to lose around 2 pounds a week.

Why could you not eat low-carb bread and fruit on Atkins? Of course, you could! That's so strange that you would say something like that. Some people really get stuck on induction forever and ever. It's too bad.

I stay on induction because it's what works for me =( I'm a very slow loser.

I did South Beach last summer and lost about 7 pounds in two weeks. However, I didn't stick with it, went back to Weight Watchers and gained a few pounds (go figure ).

I am doing Atkins and prefer it while I'm losing because I can eat more fat. South Beach is a great plan, which I may do on maintenance. I have both books, have read the South Beach book and am currently reading DANDR. There's great info in both books, but for me I prefer Atkins because it's more black and white to me. Good Luck!
