Going from Atkins to SB...are you afraid?
Hello everyone,
I'm just wondering if anyone feels as I do. I'm thankful to have the choices that the Beach allows. The variety has been a Godsend. BUT, I keep going back to the food list in my book and online, even though I've read maybe 200 times that a sugar free treat of (70) calories IS ok, and that some nuts are ok on phase one, and that yogurt and milk is allowed (no more than 8 oz). For instance, I ate one sugar free (single) creamsicle (20 calories 12 carbs by the way) and one sugar free fugdesicle (35 calories sweetned with splenda 9 carbs by the way) today. Basically I ate one popsicle. I just pulled the flavors I wanted apart and made one. I feel like I've done something wrong. Does anybody else ever feel this way. I enjoy the freedom of having a treat on the first phase. I'm just nervous that I won't lose weight like this, or that I've done something wrong. Surley I'll go ahead and lose weight eating like this...right?? Sorry this was so long. Blessings, Compassion |

That's what makes this program so unique. You can still enjoy those things and lose. You have to be careful and not overeat in this area but you do need to have that little something so you don't feel deprived. It works! I'm proof. Take care and keep up the good work. |

I will definitely add that I was SO afraid of this too and am still a bit leery. I did Atkins last year and coming into this I was so nervous about the freedom of even the first two weeks which are still restricte-but to be able to treat myself with a no sugar added fudgesicle was mind boggling! I guess only time will tell about our success on this program- we just have to stick with it to see! Good luck to you!

Here's the deal guys, it just takes a while for all of us to feel secure with any new food plan.... we....CAN..... have all these things that we worry about ...BUT... it isn't required that we eat them, that's by choice and we want some and that's natural.
The main thing is to eat these things in moderate amounts until satisfied: lean meats, green leafy, other good vegetables and legumes, no corn, potatoes, beets good/health oils, low fat cheese, low fat milk if desired a few nuts if desired eggs no sugar no refined white food like flour, etc. First we build our way of eating around those things and then add in the things we want that are program. Then in Phase 2 --by trial and error--we can add the things (one at a time) like whole grains, fruits, etc. (lower glycemic index choices) that we find we can add back in without cravings or gaining and still lose or maintain weight. If we eat a food item that causes a problem we just drop it from our food choices for the time being, and add something else if we want to. We just do away with the bad foods that actually trigger cravings and make us hungry and unhealthy and eat the good kinds that nourish our body as they help us lose weight...plenty of good carbs and fats and delicious, healthy foods. He gives us the food list, it's up to us to work our own individual plan and no two will be the same. Hope this helps, relax and be happy! Marva |

Thanks for the responses ladies. I fell a little less ill at ease now.
I think back to how I ate pre Atkins. I was doing sugar busters actually. I lost ten pounds in a month, without any problems. I ate fruit, oatmeal...you all know the plan. I did fine. I'm thankful for Atkins, but sometimes I think that it messed up my way of thinking. I mean come on...how can an apple be thought of as off limits? I said that to my Mom once and she was like, "what??" Then she got biblical on me about how we were put here with certain foods (veggies, meat, fish, fowl, beans, nuts, fruit ect). Once she framed it all that way for me (it was yet another reminder), then I simmered down and ate RIGHT again. I guess if I take myself back to what we ate before the last 100 years, and eat that I'll be fine. I WILL however add in a sugar free popscicle every now and then! AND fruit...after phase I. Thanks again ladies. Oh, and Watermelonmist...your screen name is too cute! It made me laugh out loud when I saw it. Blessings, Compassion Last edited by Compassionate : 06-14-2005 at 11:58 PM. |

Excellent post! Look at my stats folks, I lost all that weight eating very similar to phase two and simply eliminating my problem foods. I plan my menus around nutrient dense foods and I feel so much better than I did on Atkins too. This is such an easy plan to live on. I also don't need extra fiber supplements KWIM. ![]() Any food plan that triggers phobias regarding whole food groups isn't good for your mental health imo. We are trying to get over our food issues and one way of doing that is to ensure you are getting all the necessary nutrients from your food. South Beach is the most common sense plan written out there today. I finally realized that Atkins really wasn't working for me when I got a new accurate to 380 scale and saw Err. I had gained over 120 pounds by going on and off Atkins induction over a period of about five years. Each fall off the wagon caused a rapid gain of at least 10-20 pounds over the amount lost during induction. It's a vicious cycle. I personally could not function well at such low levels of carbs. Let's just say that my moods and overall sense of well being has drastically improved since I started eating this way. |

Wow Stephaniek, your describing EXACTLY what Atkins did for me. It was a vicious cycle for me as well.
I'm not knocking Atkins though. For some people maybe it does work. But for me, I know that I was more afraid and constantly thinking about food, and felt soooo restricted that I would sabotage myself by going off plan over and over. That was probably my problem, I didn't stick to it. BUT, I couldn't because of all the limits maybe. I dunno. Thanks for sharing! You've helped a lot. Blessings, Compassion |

I know exactly how you feel. When I switched over I kept feeling guilty over eating some of the allowed foods. I didn't think there would be any way I'd lose weight either but I ened up losing twice as fast as on Atkins. Once you do Atkins it's very hard to not be paranoid about every carb you consume. I stopped using fitday and stopped looking at carb counts on food. I look at the ingredients instead. That's helped alot. That and the fact that I lost much better.

100% agreed. I've always struggled in this department and have ALWAY had to take supplements to help...but since last Friday, I haven't needed any help. I love this...SoOoOoO sorry if this is TMI. But I was definitely nervous - adding things like milk and yogurt (which I still haven't gotten the courage up to use yet!LOL) scared me, but I think it's worth it b/c you get dairy which is soooo essential to a healthy diet. Good luck Compassion! |

O.K., so I have been doing Atkins for 6 months and have lost 26 pounds. If I switch to SB., do I have to start at phase 1 or do I start at phase 2? Phase 1 seems like what I have been doing already for the past 6 months.

Congratulations on your weight loss Dzny!
You may have been doing the same thing for 6 months, you've been doing something right. I've never knocked Atkins, I think it's great a great way of eating, done right, and Dr. Atkins is definitely the pioneer in low carb eating for sure. Everyone is different and after being on Atkins , you have the sugar, refined carbs monster curbed; however, to me, the SBD way of eating is just a decimal off Atkins but still different. You probably don't need the detox of sugar, refined carbs. During the 2 week SBD induction, foods are eaten that you may not have eaten and enjoyed like lots of veggies, light cheese, beans, dairy etc. After looking over the book and the food list stickies in the top of this forum, if you see things that are new to you, and you want to try SBD, try adding those in first to kind of get a feel of it before going into P2. Kind of try your own 1.5 trial induction. If you are working out of the original book, check out the food updates info sticky thread, it will help to understand the difference in our foods lists and those in the book. The menu ideas help a lot. Most who've switched are having good results. Good luck with your decision and your continued success! |
